Default planning to trade 12 imperza

Hey guys so I am planning to trade in my 2012 Impreza 2.0 for a 2013 WRX. Just wanted to know if there were any major issues with these year models of the WRX.

You SHOULD be fine. WRX's are built strong!

Considering its the same platform since 2008 for WRX, you should be fine

What's the dealership giving you in trade for the Impreza? How many miles on it? Is it a base model, Sport, or Limited?

As I've advocated to others who have considered trading in a young car, your best bet is to sell it yourself out of your own driveway. I literally sold my 2010 Golf TDI for $5500 more than I could get in trade, using a free Craigslist ad.

Give it a try. You've got nothing to lose. Make sure you write a strong ad, and post nice pics in the ad. PM me if you want me to provide the text from my TDI ad. You'll need to modify it, of course, but it will give you an idea of what people like to see in a used car ad. I sold my TDI in 2 days. It would have been 1 day, but the buyer needed to secure financing, which took some time.

Good luck!

Im in the same boat as you. Try selling it privately.
The only issues I've heard of on new wrx's are clutch-related and the above mentioned dipstick tube.

Agreed, 16k does sound rather low regardless of what trim you have

Not really. It's pretty well known that dealerships often make more money selling used cars vs. new cars. Competition between dealerships keeps new-car prices relatively low; if a customer doesn't like one dealer's price, he just drives across town and buys the exact same car from the other dealer. Therefore the profit margin on new cars is fairly low (measured in the hundreds of dollars).

This doesn't work on used cars, as the supply of a particular model with a particular configuration is limited. The dealership knows this. If a customer wants a car on the used lot, there's a good chance that it's the only used car like it in town. Supply is low, and demand is high if it's a desirable car. Therefore the profit margin on a desirable used car is high (measured in the thousands of dollars).

When you trade in a car, the dealership's job is to buy it from you for as little as possible, and then sell it for as much as he can get. Surprisingly, dealerships often put their best salespeople on the used car lot because that's where the highest profit opportunities are.

My TDI was in mint condition. The Subaru dealership offered me $16.5k in trade. They probably could have sold that car for $24k. I sold it myself for $22k. It's a win-win. I sold the car for $5.5k more than I would have gotten in trade. And the guy who bought it from me paid $2k less than he would have paid at a dealership.

Everybody is happy. So sell the car yourself, and put the profits in your own pocket rather than in the dealership's pocket.

^That's what I meant, I guess I should have explained it better. 16k seems low, where you could prob get at least 2k more selling privately. I know full well about dealers and used cars

I showed up looking for a 06/07 sti and the prices were unreasonable. All the cheap ones were beat on. I only found 2 in my price range with miles that I liked. In the end I paid 27k for my 2013 wrx because the performance imo was close enough and I couldn't find any hawkeye sti used under 25k with low miles. With the factory service package and all the model updates buying new was just a better deal. The resale value actually was a thorn. People wanted good coin for the used ones and I wasn't going to sign up for a 50k+ miles car just to save 3-5 grand. Dealers know what cars are money and tuner cars always sell. There is an 06 wrx sitting down the street from my house right now for 18k with 80k on the clock the guy wont budge.

Exactly. Here's a dealership selling a 2008 WRX with 52k miles on it for $24.5k:

Are you freakin' kidding me? I'd just buy a brand new one for a few thousand more with zero miles and a new-car warranty. These guys are nuts.

honda offered me 18k for my impreza but Toyota where the wrx is offered me 16k. So I'll probably try selling the impreza myself. Toyota wants 27k for the wrx plus my negative rolled over will be 36k out of the door price. That's crazy considering a brand new sti is 36k haha

Have you checked the insurance difference? If you are having trouble affording one that should be factored into the whole picture

One of the most intelligent and informative posts I have read here in a long time. Think about it, it makes sense. We just bought a 2013 Elantra with Pfferd package for $250 below invoice due to April Rebates and strong neg.. try that with a used car!! TY
