I guess it depends on how long the wait is between the DSG coming out and the MT coming out. If it's a few months, no biggie. If it's a MY, nope.

It is a bummer since I wrote off the S3 as it's DSG only. I like the DSG in principle, but really enjoy a manual for daily driving.

Same here.

This further solidifies my FiST -> Golf R plan.

The Golf R probably won't be out until CY 2015 *as it is.* Waiting beyond that (until what... almost 2016 probably?) means that I should probably get a fun car to restore my sanity before then.

Driving this 2.5i until the Golf R comes out is akin to eating PB&J for lunch daily for the next 1.5 years. Would it kill me? No. Actually, it would probably save me a bit of money. But holy crapballs it would be boring.

Q1 DSG
Q2/Q3 Manual

Same for every country on the Earth. It's an extra few months.

I'm in the same boat. I bought a Soul in 2012 because I needed a car, and there was nothing that really interested me, so I bought the cheapest appliance hatch I could find (it's actually a damn good value) but it's dog **** slow, and despite the 6mt, it's boring lol. The FiST is at the top of my list, with the R falling in with when I hope to transfer/promote job-wise in a few years.

Yeah, at an expected $35K, the R is a stretch for me anyway, money-wise.

Oddly enough, I am waiting on a promotion as well, but much sooner... hopefully next month. Only *if* that goes through and more importantly... only *if* I get an accompanying, immediate, crazy-town salary increase should I consider the R *now.*

I *could* afford it... just as I afforded the STI I had before the 2.5i I drive now, but that doesn't mean I should do it.

The FiST, at $23K-ish all-in is a much, much smarter decision, even figuring in a second set of wheels plus snow tires. I'm hoping to test drive one tomorrow, but they're in somewhat short supply on dealer lots.

Lol.....I can't understand the panic everyone is experiencing over the delay of the manual. Those who want DSG then this will be good for you; but if you want manual then wait a few more months.

Will the new R help boost interest in the brand here? I just saw their July sales. Dang. Just about nose diving(here). So weird considering what they are doing globally. Especially in China.

My feeling is that compared to the rest of the American market they're just too expensive for what you get. I briefly looked at the Golf R before I bought my BRZ but they were nearly $40,000 out the door. At $40,000 I'm not looking at Volkswagens.

I doubt that it will...but that shouldn't concern you much, unless you're planning to start selling them soon.

Still.. the new R is tempting

...the voices........ damn them voices

I was like that for years and years....if I had fewer than 2 vehicles it almost always was because I had just got rid of one and was on the way to get another

I usually always had some sort of hot rod and a hot hatch...and usually a pos/beater/tow vehicle.

I'm glad I don't have anywhere to keep another vehicle right now

I will likely buy a new car this year or early next as my wrx has become my 'work truck' and I need a non-work car to drive that is fun and gets reasonable...30ish mpg... on the road....and cost $25k ish.

its nice that there are several possible options and the competition among manufacturers in this class will only yield better and more capable cars to choose from

win-win

now...if only we could get an awd hot hatch...or just a 3 door... in this price range that didn't have an h4 engine

Ford Focus ST starts at $24k.
Only amateurs need AWD.

I'm guessing he's being sarcastic but it does take a little bit more finesse to be fast w/ fwd vs just mashing the throttle out of a turn w/ awd.

I do like some competition. I do like driving them also. I doubt they'll ever go under here. I hate to see companies go away. It's weird not having Pontiac or Oldsmobile around. I feel bad that I forget about Izusu and Suzuki will surely fall that way in a few years.

Oh, jesus, I've been hanging out over at VWvortex a lot lately and those guys are like domestic violence victims in terms of their ability to deny, ignore, and remain loyal. For instance, the new MK7 Golf is coming over soon. This is the basic, plain jane econo model albeit with leather seats and a few niceties. VW wants ~$28kish for this piece of junk and these guys have no problems paying that.

Umm, exsqueeze me? This is the regular model we're talking about here. Why would you pay that much for an econobucket? Why would you buy this over the GTI? But these guys are happy as little clams because they have leather seats and a backup cam and the false sense of smugness that accompanies a pseudo-luxury German automobile.

If I'm going to start tickling $30k and I'm going for German luxury, I'm looking at gently used 3 series off lease. Not VWs. Or 335s with a few years on them.

The Golf R is probably worth $30K. The GTI or a regular Golf? No. Just... no.

It's STI performance (from all indications), a better built motor, and an interior which is in another league. While it's not a cheap car, I'm not offended by it's mid 30's pricing in view of the market. Things have just gotten more expensive.

I'm not even offended by the S3 in the low 40s in view of the STI.

Agreed....it's more of a joke when a tarted up Impreza cost mid 30's to me. The Golf R is way more refined, more fuel efficient, and faster than the STI.....I don't see a problem with its price tag.

Can't compare brand new with used period.

While the R and STI are expensive, they are the ultimate versions of their cars exclusive to the fans.

A used 335 is a used 335. A brand new 335 is another level.

It's like many people buy used BMW, Lexus, and Mercedes to show off and justify their purchase than buy a new economy car.

I believe to really be able to drive a BMW, it should be purchased new and paid with cash
