This week, I stripped off the manifold, the timing belt covers and belt and removed the camshafts. At every step, it was clear that this was the first time any of it had been disassembled. The bolts has zero wrench marks on any of them. Strangely enough, I had very little trouble removing the cam gears which leads me to believe it is truly a low mileage motor as promised as those bolts tend to get super tight on higher mileage motors. Perhaps I was just lucky, but I got them off with only the short breaker bar and a normal exertion. The inside of the timing belt cover has ZERO belt dust or shavings. The belts were all in perfect condition without a hint of cracking or wear. Good signs. The inside of the valve covers was perfectly clean and silver. No gold staining and absolutely NO sludge. Also good signs. The cams and their races were mirror finish smooth. Not a single score or line on any of them. The turbo is confirmed to be a VF36, twinscroll, ball bearing unit. It spins freely and the housing does not show any signs of wear. The compressor housing did have about a quarter of a teaspoon of oil in it though which is a bit strange. The inlet has a very light residue as well. Perhaps normal blow-by. Hopefully the seals are fine. :fingers crossed: Hopefully this speaks to the overall condition of the motor. :fingers crossed: Some things I've noticed so far: 1. Timing cover has a slight crack/punch mark in it. 2. TMIC has a hole or two. It could easily be welded and fixed, but I will be getting a refund for it. 3. Oil pan is slightly dented. 4. No lower block studs for the transmission. 5. The EJ207 does NOT use a PCV valve, but rather a simple "T". This is OEM. Here are a few pictures:

As far as cams, I have not selected a profile yet. I am still collecting data on what the motor comes with and how that compares to the EJ257/255 cams.
So far, I've only measured lift on the EJ207 V8 Spec-C cams (from this motor) and a set of EJ257 cams that I borrowed from Jay (thank you). I'll be picking up a set of EJ207 V9 cams from Alex this weekend to measure as well. I will get duration numbers on all of them too. Concerning lift, I've found that the EJ257/255 cams have more lift on both the Intake and Exhaust compared to the EJ207 V8 Spec-C. I am told the V8 Spec-C and non-Spec-C use the same cams. We shall see. LIFT: EJ257/255: Intake: 9.58mm Exhaust: 9.80mm EJ207 V8 Spec-C Intake: 8.88mm Exhaust: 9.58mm Just looking at the two, it seems like the lobes on the EJ207 are fatter than the EJ257, but that could simply be an optical illusion. I won't make any claims until I measure them. I am looking to at least try the lift of the EJ257, and perhaps more, but I also do not want to do springs so it's a balance. Based on the observed duration numbers I'll go from there in selecting an option. |

i like those special edition blue head studs! got any closer pics of the external oil cooler lines? if thats what it is, im surprised about the lack of spacing between the timing cover and the header for clearance.

Ok, I've been working on the car a bit as time allows. Work still has me for 10-12 hours a day so it's taking a while.
This weekend, I decided to clean up the engine bay. I figured now that the motor is out, this was the perfect time to clena and paint the bay. I don't know how it works with other car manufactures, but Subaru likes to save money by only painting the motor bay with a base coat... and a lousy one at that (primer shows in several areas). I like black bays, but decided to continue the WRB exterior color into the bay. Jay and I had some WRB mixed locally and put into spray cans (cheaper than Grimmspeed and others at about $11 a can with a 4 can minimum I think due to the minimum paint mix amount). The match is pretty damn close. Certainly its good enough for a motor bay where there are lots of shadows and all. For a rattle can job, it looks pretty good. We used a VHT hard clear so hopefully it will be somewhat chemical resistant I guess only time will tell. It still needs one more coat which I will probably do tomorrow after work. It's not a shaved bay, I'm not that much of a baller. I simply wanted to clean things up a bit and make the motor bay a bit less of an eyesore. Base coat down (WRB color):
Clear applied (still need one more coat) (these are night shots with a florescent overheads and flash on so it s bit bright!): After I do the last coat of clear, I will be deep cleaning all the parts that were removed and then reinstalling them. I will then re-bleed the brake system that was opened up. Again, up close, there are some imperfections, and I did nothing to shave the bay, but it is a HUGE improvement over the blotchy factory bay paint. I'm happy with the results. Not bad for $80 in supplies and a weekend's work. There is a very real chance that this paint will look better than my exterior paint, which is in a sorry, sorry state. Then I used a scotchbrite pad to scuff and sand paint every where. Then I removed the dust with compressed air. Lastly I wiped the bay down with alcohol as a final cleaning. Damn right. You and me both. |

I ****ing hate brake fluid. God i hate brake fluid sooooooo much. I hate it. but seriously like one drop. and now there is a quarter size spot of metal amongst the paint. i ****ing hate brake fluid. that looks awesome though...god i hate brake fluid. |

Might be too late now but Space Age sells a clear that has a hardener in it (or catalyst or whatever it is that make auto paint so good.)
They can actually put it in a rattle can, though it does has a short shelf life, like 24 hours or something. They told me about it when I did my last project. You should look into getting a bead blaster. We have one at my work and it is freaking amazing! I'm slowly bringing in my car piece by piece.... But I'm sure you'll get the same amazing results with all of the time you put into it! Remember I've got dibs on the vf36! |

But like sometimes Jay, even with the spray bottle full of soapy water, a drop can still be spilt and mess up your paint, thats like what happened in my case you know... ...god damn it |
