Default 10K mile oil interval on RP 10-40

I don't have the results back yet, just wanted to tease you a bit

My last change was 7.5K and they said it had enough to go longer, and my Si levels finally came down so i figured 10K would be a good stop. Filter was changed @5K, wish me luck!!

(should have results in the next few days, i'll bump when i do)

I guess I'm lazy but, if I must get on my back to remove my undercover and change the oil filter 2X times for every oil change what have I gained? I think I would go 7,500 miles and do 1X oil & 1X filter and be done with it. As a second thought I would go Mobil 1 oil & Mobil 1 filter for 10,000 miles. JMO. ed

yes you are lazy I don't run extended oil intervals because i don't feel like changing my oil, i run them because it's not necessary to change the oil any sooner. I use puny little bosch (not the premium ones either) filters, and i don't trust them beyond 5K. I guess i could run one for the entire interval and see what happens. . .(I"m using the bosch because i got a good deal on a dozen of them so i have to run them out).

Default edit to input exact report numbers

bumpity, results are in!

Comments: Most wear metals wore close to universal averages. ONly iron, which tracks with miles on oil was higher. The filter change @ 5K kept insolubles inline. The TBN was 2.4, so only a little additive was left, 1.0 is low. No fuel dillution was present do we don't know why the viscosity shifted to a 20W SAE range other than the added oil. WE did not find any water or anitfreeze in this sample. Silicon was good showing normal air filtration. We think 10K mile interval is all this turbo engine can handle in order to keep wear metals near averages.

Aluminum: 3

Barium: 0

Viscosity: 58.3
Flashpoint: 375
Fuel: <0.5
Antifreeze: 0
Water: 0
Insolubles: 0.5

TBN: 2.4

Now time for me to go over to Bobis theoilguy. I wonder what the TBN is on a VOA for RP?? And also this change in viscosity is the first time it's happened. . .make up oil was only .5 qts this time (other intervals it's been 2+ qts and this didn't happen).

Specs about car and engine:

10K on oil, filter changed at 5K
60K on engine
stage 4 wrx for 35K, stock prior to that

Thumbs up

Nice results. This makes me think twice about changing the RP 5w30 I've been running for 5,000 miles (w/ filter change at 3,000).

yea 5K is a little early for RP if your car is in order. Only way to know for sure for you own car is to have it tested.

I run RP too and change mine at 5000/6000
and use pure one filters. If that was my car I
would change it at 7500 miles. That way during those last 2500 miles if you start running it hard or get in real high heat etc,you will be better protected. You could probally, get 7500 miles on a good filter and just get under there once and change it and the filter at 7500 miles. But to each there own right!!Oh ya,I was curious to see your results beeing your running the RP.I start getting nervous on mine after 5000 miles!!

Pretty good report for 10k, despite a little shearing! Check out Ed Hackett's post on bitog running the RP 21 in a stock WRX. He's been running it quite a while.

We've been running RP 21 in the race car for the last 8 months. We've done 1 oil change, 4 or so track days/testing/dyno time. Car makes great power
