Default DIY splash guard/skid plate?

So I was thinking of making a DIY splash guard/skid plate, anyone done this, is there a template for it?

Yea, i was thinking of doing the skid plate myself. It can't be too hard if you have some metal work skills (cutting, bending, welding)

I don't even think welding would be involved, just cutting and bending. I was thinking something like this: http://azpinstalls.com/rallyarmor/
seems pretty simply to make.

Also thinking of making a radiator cover, probably a little more cutting and bending involved in that one. Anyone got a template for that too?

If you do this, could you post the dimensions and your method

I was hoping to find a template on here. But if I don't, and try and make it from scratch, sure I'll step by step pics and dimensions.

I did a little searching a while ago and came up with nothing, and then winter came so I got to lazy to go mock it up...

subscribed!

I don't have any dimensions but I'd rather make one for cheaper than buying one.

Pretty simple to figure out the dimensions yourself. Take a piece of cardboard, go lay it up, mark out where you want to cut it, and voila. Template.

That was my plan. I was going to take my factory splash guard which is sitting in my garage, and use it to outline something in card board, then mock it up under the car, and see how many bends I'll need to make.

I made one a few weeks ago. I used two street signs for material and some square stock to space it down from the subframe. Bolts to the five factory bolt holes used by the stock splash guard. The wings are unsupported, but I'm not sure how to change that. Only a little bit of the center section is visible from the front, everything else is nicely hidden.

The notch is to clear one of my fmic pipes. I may end up notching the other side too. You can't tell from the pics, but the leading edge is bent up at and angle to minimize damage if I ever hit something.

I don't know how much of a hit it could actually take since I didn't reinforce it anywhere. The first tank of gas with it is showing +1 mpg and it now coasts much farther than it did with the stock splash guard.

Anyone can build one. It's just a flat plate with some holes drilled in it. One thing to watch out for is when you drill the front three holes. They are not symmetrical. I actually wanted the shiny side of the signs on top.

^looks good, got some dimensions so I can get an idea of what size piece of sheet metal to buy? I may make it out of one piece, or I may make it in three pieces, on for the middle about the size of the factory splash guard, and two other pieces for the sides.

The signs were right turn only, a little bigger than 3 feet by 2 feet. It's unfortunate that slow children signs are too small for this stuff. I really wanted a freeway sign so it could all be one piece, but the junk yard didn't have any. It turned out quite a bit heavier than I though it would be due to the extra metal from the wings overlap. It came to about15lbs. Stop signs aren't quite the right shape unless you can find the really big ones.

TMIC users will have more attachment locations to chose from. There are three across the bottom of the bumper I can't use because the intercooler is in the way.

My biggest fear has become dropping stuff in the engine bay.

OK, so I'm going to start this project and document each step. This is my first attempt at anything like this so I'm going to post each step as I do them rather than all at once, once I'm done. That way people can add suggestions or point out anything that I f**ked up.

First I'm going to make a template out of cardboard and then get a piece of sheet metal to make the real thing. I'm thinking aluminum to save weight, but may do stainless depending on pricing. I'll go to a metal supplier later to get prices on materials.

Got started today. Took my factory splash guard and then traced the outline on a piece of cardboard. Also make sure to mark the holes for the bolts.

I then outlined a simple rectangle around the outline of the splash guard. I figured it would be easiest to keep it as square are possible to minimize the number of cuts I'll have to make.

Cut out the cardboard. And tomorrow I'll mock it up under the car, and see where I need to trim, bend etc.

I know not much for a first step but stay tuned.

Interested to see how this turns out, i was thinking about doing the same thing on my car.

Maybe you can use the RalliTEK Skidplate as a guiding point

Don't worry as soon as I dial in a final template, I'll post it up here with measurements. You'll be able to make your own.
