Default TIL there are companies releasing music on cassette tape

Thank you for still supporting a media that is guaranteed to eventually render the music unlistenable. Can you even buy a decent tape deck. Or is the question can you not buy an "audiophile" tape deck.

All that said, I was thinking about how much work it was to make a mix tape from vinyl.

Select a song to fit the theme of the mix.
Sample parts to get the sound level set so all the songs on the tape were consistent.
Get the needle cued just right.
Make sure there not too much, nor too little time between songs.
Find a song that fits in the time left at the end of the tape.

Here's one guy's take on tape.

Quote:
"I'm always going to be more interested in artists who are doing their own thing than artists who appear to be jumping someone else's train," he says. "And while it's always a pleasure to get press coverage and sales, the level of marketability someone's music has is irrelevant to me. I'm only going to put something out if I connect with it in a deep or significant way, and I can only hope other people feel the same."

Dude in the adjacent room to mine in college had the Nakamichi Dragon 3-head. It was pretty nice.

Think he said he paid $1000+ for it. Used. In the 90's.

If I looked hard enough, I bet I could find at least one of those unopened TDK DS-X 90min cassettes somewhere in the back of a drawer.

Last year my kid (10, now) got really interested in an old Walkman we had in our storage room. She started listening to tapes, spending some allowance money on old tapes at a local record shop.. then the player broke. When we went looking for new ones, all we could find were cheap-ass Chinese models, and after some digging figured out that the internals of basically all the new models come out of the same crappy plant in China. The only other options were vintage Walkmans for hundreds of dollars on Ebay. After a couple of the cheap new ones broke within a few hours or just showed up broken, she gave up and is back to being impressed by an old iPod Video.

I always used 90s for recording whole albums because most are < 45 mins.

I still have a bunch of tapes in a box somewhere. I should buy a tape deck sometime.

That's kind of what the link to Bandcamp in the OP was about.

I gotta say, about 20 years ago my mind was blown when my friend showed me his state of the art stereo that could burn music from vinyl to CD.

He burned me so many CDs of rare and hard to find records.

I had the software, but I never wanted to get a good enough soundcard.

I had one of these in my 91 MR2.
