87 Ford Tempo Gl: perfect car for a 17 year old who thought he was invincible... slow. 66 Ford Mustang: 289 4 speed. Still have it as my long term project car. 88 Volvo 760 Turbo: Tempo died, hand-me-down from my parents, handed it down to my brother 90 Mazda Rx-7 GTU: Most fun $4k car ever, at least for me. Gave it to a family member in need. 02 Mazda Protege5: Always wanted a wrx, but I lived in a ****ty neighborhood and didn't make that much money, so I bought the next best thing. Excellent handling car. Traded in for... 05 WRX Wagon: I'm driving this until the wheels fall off. Couldn't be happier. I just realized up until this car, all of my previous cars are Ford related products. I'm not a Ford guy by any means, it just happened that way.

Here's everything I can remember (at 48 years old, I’ll admit to not necessarily remembering everything) more or less in the order I had them. My apologies in advance for being so verbose but it was an interesting trip for me down memory lane. . .
1970 Chevy Kingswood Estate wagon (parents car). 400 cid V8 which each of us 4 kids took turns beating the snot out of as we got our licenses. I (second oldest) personally was responsible for breaking a motor mount, removing the exhaust (45mph - no wrenches involved) and balding a brand new set of Firestone 500’s in less than 10k miles (sorry dad). 1972 Pontiac Lemans GT (parents car) 350 cid v8. Got into a minor accident with this one (hit a motorcycle at a 4-way stop intersection) and broke the fiberglass trim around the headlight. This was only a week after I got my license and the car was less than a year old (sorry dad). 1965 For Mustang coupe. I bought it off a friend of a friend who had just swapped in a 390 cid V8 out of a ’64 Thunderbird. Yes the one and only Thunderstang. It was crude (engine didn’t fit quite right on the fabricated motor mounts so the hood was left off) but man did it have torque!! I only had it for a couple of months (plans to convert to a straight axel up front never panned out) and then I sold it to a friend. He dumped the clutch on it shortly thereafter in our HS parking lot, blew the rear end to bits and that, as they say, was that (a moment of silence if you please). 1964½ Ford Mustang convertible 289cid V8. Heavily modded including internals & reworked heads but it was beaten into the ground had virtually no top and a torn up interior and was not running when I bought it. A dispute between the person I bought it from and his (ex)buddy who claimed he’d put thousands into the heads alone, and a title which hadn’t been transferred for at least 3 owners led to a dispute as to who really owned it. I protected my interests the only way I thought I could. Someone who’d become a friend of mine (the guy who originally built the Thunderstang) happened to be self employed in the “I’ll haul your old heap away” business”. We ran that car to the crusher and I was literally underneath it on his flat bed truck wrenching off parts while we were waiting in line to have it weighed in at the scrap yard. Too bad really. It would’ve taken a ton of $$ to restore but it was a real piece of automotive history that I’m sad to say I had a direct hand in destroying. 1967 Dodge Coronet 440cid V8. The body straight as an arrow but in primer with a reverse teardrop hood scoop. The engine was built with all the bolt-ons. This one I bought actually knowing the title was in question (salvage issues). I intended to straighten things out but I found out I’d been “had” (the block was damaged). So off to the crusher it went. (Admittedly, these were not my “best moments”. ) 1955 Chevy Belaire 327cid V8. Heavily modded engine just refreshed when I bought it (inc. 12.5 to 1 pistons and a big a$$ cam). But with a body, interior, and wiring harness that needed work. I drove this one for a summer (it was really-really fast – not too stable, nowhere near enough brakes, but fast). Then I decided it needed too much work to finish so traded it to a guy who worked at a local speed shop for a 1969 mustang. He then gutted it replacing virtually everything above the floor pan with fiberglass and went racing with it. He ended up putting the engine into an old beater ’65 4-door Chevy Biscayne (think TV show - Beretta) for his daily driver. It made for quite a sleeper! The Belaire got a 355cid race prepped motor and as far as I know, never saw the streets again. 1969 Ford Mustang coupe 200cid 6cyl. The body and interior were good and I had thoughts of swapping in a V8 (ala Thunderstang II) but I ditched this one after only a few months as the lure of owning another “shoebox” was just too great. 1957 Chevy Belaire 4 door 283 V8. The only performance mod on this car when I saw it was the dual quad carbs which I had the 17yo remove and replace with a single 4bbl before I bought it. (Yes, dual quads on an otherwise stock 283 – some people’s kids. . .). Anyways, I had it for a year and put bigger wheels/tires on it, replaced an oil pump that was failing and replaced the 3 speed tranny with a 4 speed M22 rock crusher. It was gloss black – just beautiful. Unfortunately, it was rear ended big time while parked in front of my parent’s house one morning by someone who had no insurance. Another piece of automotive history sent to the crusher. 1965 Olds Starfire coupe 425cid V8. This was a rust free Texas car with 370hp right from the factory. I only put a larger carb and bigger wheels/tires on it (along with some air shocks for clearance) but man did it haul!! From a dead stop it could lay down rubber forever. It only got about 12mpg but it could break the tires loose even going between 1st and 2nd gear (and this was an automatic). When I sold it, the car was getting “tired” (needed brakes, tranny was starting to slip, etc.). This one too probably went to the scrap yard not too long after I sold it. Again, it’s too bad. I had no idea just how rare this model actually was until long after I had sold it. (Think Olds answer to the Ford Thunderbird.) 1967 Chevy Camaro RS. Originally had a 307 cid V8 with a 3 speed tranny but I swapped it out for a mid sixties 327 from a Corvette (the 365hp one with the solid lifter cam) and then added the usual bolt-ons. This car really rocked. I missed a shift once on my way back from McDonalds and hit 8500rpm going into second. Nothing broke, french fries everywhere - the experience was amazing!! I had it for about a year and a half and then sold it to my brother. That was 25 years ago. He installed a 4 speed and completely redid both the interior and exterior. He still owns it. It hasn’t been driven for over 15 years (hasn’t even been started now in about 7) but he’s waiting until his boys get a little older (they’re 6 & 8) and I think he’s going to try and do a “family restoration project”. The funny thing about this car is that the engine could very well be worth 10x what the car is to someone with an old ‘vette they’re trying to match numbers on. 1977 Honda Civic 1500cc 4cyl. Bought it used in 1978. Here’s where I finally got “religion” about finally finishing my 2-year technical degree (took me 7½ years). It was a great little car and the only thing I ever did to it was add slightly oversize tires. 1978½ Mazda RX7, My first actual brand new car!! After reading reviews in the auto mags I was positively smitten. I simply had to have this car. As it turned out I kept it for 4 years but I never really liked it as much as I thought I would. It really lacked low-end torque and I was too busy with school and socializing to spend any time or money trying to modify it. In fact, I rarely even drove it. I had moved out of my parents’ house by then and was living in an apartment that was within walking distance of school, my job, and my girlfriends’ place. By the time I sold it the car only had 12.5k miles on it. Unfortunately, one evening while I was out “socializing” I slammed it into a tree on my way home and the body shop didn’t do the best job of repairing it. Consequently, it didn’t have the resale value one would’ve otherwise expected with that odometer reading. Oh well. 1983 Mercury Lynx wagon 4cyl-auto, Purchased brand new (an ill fated attempt to “grow up” and be respectable by selling the RX7 and getting a practical car). This car gave me more trouble that any other vehicle I’ve ever owned. It randomly went into “limp-in” mode and the dealership was never able to verify or correct the issue. I was commuting 100 miles a day at the time and finally traded it in more out of desperation than anything. It turned out that 15 years later Ford finally owned up to the fact that there was some sort of defect that they had kept denying existed. Some folks who still owned them got some compensation but there was nothing I could do about it. 1985 Dodge Daytona Turbo 2.2-auto, back in the saddle again!! Purchased brand new, this car (with the possible exception of my current WRX) was my very favorite. Stone cold stock the car was perfectly balanced and could simply fly around corners on its’ factory supplied Goodyear Gator-Backs. Sure it lacked some low-end punch, but it out handled the RX7 and got 25mpg doing it. I beat the crap out this car for the first 50K miles of its life redlining it repeatedly every time I drove. The only thing that ever went wrong was a blown head gasket that they fixed under warranty. My soon to be ex-wife then started driving it then and she put another 60k on it before a failed oil pump necessitated a complete engine rebuild. (Even that probably could have been avoided if she had been paying any attention to “that little gauge thingy”. Grrrr. 1987 Dodge Shadow Turbo ES 2.2-auto, I liked the Daytona so well, I bought this car thinking it was essentially the same car with a different look. Boy was I wrong. Hated this car the whole time I had it. The thing had way more oversteer than the Daytona (something which I had several near death experiences learning) and the engine had a kind of a faint vibration to it that you could feel through the center console. This too blew a head gasket at about 40k miles and I didn’t beat this one up nearly as bad as the Daytona). I heard there was going to be a factory recall because some of the engines were assembled with the wrong rings (leading to the vibration issue) but I sold it at 70k miles before the recall came about. 1987 Dodge Horizon 1.8 manual, New girlfriends’ (soon to be 2nd wife) car. This was truly a great little car. She bought it new before we met and kept for almost 15 years. At about 120k miles it still hadn’t ever had a major repair and still looked almost new (if you didn’t look too close). We both still regret having to sell it but with kids on the way we decided to get a mini-van. 1987 Olds Toranado coupe 400cid-auto, Purchased used as a second car with 140k miles on it as a beater to tow my new boat. (The Shadow, which I still had, couldn’t handle the weight. Too heavy to pull without overheating and too heavy to stop without raising my pulse.) It was a bit rusty but the engine ran so smooth you’d have thought it was brand new. Only 2 months after I bought it I experienced an engine fire (while towing the boat) and nearly lost it completely. Every single wire & hose under the hood was melted. I only paid $800 for it to begin with and I was ready to write it off. But a friend of mine and my brother (both experienced auto technicians) convinced me that with a little junkyard scrounging and a lit of patience we could possibly turn that pile of goo into a running engine again with relatively little $$. I was reluctant at first, but the body was hardly touched (only some minor discoloration and slight blistering on the hood) so I agreed to try just to humor them. Who knows, if we could get it running maybe I could still sell it for a few bucks. It turned out to be the hardest (and also the most rewarding) thing I’ve ever done to a car. It took a dozen trips to the junkyard looking for everything from a carb to little bits of vacuum fittings and sections of wiring. I spent several hours almost every night for 2 months either getting parts, cleaning parts, painting parts (well it was all apart after all) or soldering wires. I actually burned out one soldering gun and had to get another one before it was done. But in the end it not only ran but the engine bay looked practically new. I kept this beast for almost 6 years and spend almost as much time repairing it as I did driving it. All told I put in about another $5k into it over the years before I finally let it go. 1988 Jeep Cherokee Pioneer 4.0 6cly-auto, Purchased used in ’95 with 70k miles on it. I picked this up largely because I knew the Toranado wouldn’t be able to tow the boat much longer and I wanted to ditch the Shadow before the engine vibration led to a total rebuild. The only thing I “modded” on the Jeep was putting oversized deep lug truck tires on it. The ride was really harsh, they rubbed a bit when turned all the way, and the road noise was terrible. But in 4WD the dang thing could go through the snow like nothing I’ve ever driven. 2001 Chrysler Town & Country LXI/AWD van 3.8-auto, Purchased new partly because we had kids coming and partly as a replacement for when the Jeep finally had to go. We bought this with every available option and although we had numerous problems from the get-go, I still love the van. The first couple years we had it there was more than $5k in warranty work done to it. The stereo’s head unit failed after 2 weeks, the AC compressor after 2 months. The steering rack went next followed shortly by a bad rear axel. The quality of this vehicle was just terrible. But the design is great and the gizmos are wonderful. Things seemed to have settled down in the past year and we’re hoping all the “factory bugs” are gone. We’ve only got 34k on it now, but as of a year ago we started using it as our primary vehicle. We only expect to rack up about 12-14k miles a year on it and I’m hoping that translates to another 5-7 years of ownership without quite so many repairs. 2004 Subaru WRX sedan-4EAT, The only one on this list you’re probably really interested in. Purchased new (after a great deal of disagreement about whether or not it was going to be too small), this car is part secondary transportation, part hobby. After several years of not turning wrenches on anything (not since I got rid of the Toranodo) I wanted to buy something I could tinker with again (something a little more reliable than an old beater this time) and that would fun to drive. Now that I’ve changed out a few things, I’d say this car greatly exceeds my expectations. It accelerates as fast or faster than anything I’ve owned, out corners them all, and does it all with AWD and 25mpg. I’ve only put 6k miles on it so far but I haven’t experienced any “factory bugs” with it at all. At an average milage of 2-3K a year and no winters, I expect this car could very well out last me The current mod list is as follows: STI Hood Scoop Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 225/50/16 Cobb Access Port – stage 2 map Borla Hushback Perrin IC hoses PDE Flex UP Pipe Cobb Down Pipe w\cat Protorque High-Stall Torque Converter Hayden 676 Rapid Cool Trans Cooler Hotchkis F&R swabars Kartboy rear Endlinks Oh, and my first mods – a rear cup holder/car seats for the kids[/quote] 10 points for the longest post in history.... |

Lorenzo- You had a few rare cars there. I drove a '88 Grand Am turbo recently, a rare 5 speed model too. It had a few mods, great power, runs a 14.8 at 95 MPH.
Do you have any pics of the Lynx XR3? I can't find pics of one anywhere on the net. |

1980 Subaru 1600 GL Wagon- Best ride ever. Paid $10 for it. It had sat in a yard for 10 years, but we finally got it running again. First day I had it out I was running it around in a field, jumped it about 4ft into the air over a berm, totally destoyed it
1984 Jeep Cherokee- Continuing in my quest for the ultimate junker, this one was $100. The starter motor would put out a cloud of blue smoke when I would turn it over, BUT it did have working 4wd with low range. Had fun with that one for a while, until the starter quit working completely. We ended up destroying the transfer case when we tried pull starting it. The guy steering it didn't know it was in 4-low 1987 Honda CRX- Bought for $100 from a buddy of mine. It suddenly quit while he was driving down the highway. He couldn't get it running again, and I felt like owning more junk. My current time waster |

21, lucky, I had no car, nor money, so no job. I didn't get my first car until I graduated high school and was almost 19. Not all my cars, but cars I drove regularly: 2000 Durango (dad's/sold) 1997 Legacy (mom's/sold) 2000 Outback Sedan (mom's/sold) 1995 240SX SE (graduation gift, saved up and got a SR20DET swap, now trying to sell)<- 2002 Maxima SE (mom's/sold) 2005 MINI Cooper (mom's current) 2005 WRX STi (current)<- 2005 Legacy 2.5GT (dad's current) |
