Rally Stuff RallyCross @ Thunderhill - April 17 Online Registration

It’s time to play in the dirt! http://www.sfrscca.org/RallyX/

RallyCross @ Thunderhill, April 17th, 2005 - Click here for online registration

The complete 2005 schedule:

April 16th: TSD Rally to the RallyCross (more info)
April 17th: Thunderhill RallyCross I
May 14th: Thunderhill RallyCross II
June 25th: Thunderhill RallyCross III
July 23-24: Golden West Road Rally
September 24-25: Thunderhill Rally School
October 1: Thunderhill RallyCross IV
October 2: Thunderhill RallyCross V

Some new stuff for 2005:

We are using the new SCCA RallyCross performance classes this year. Click here for more info

The September Rally School will take place over two days. The first day will be similar to the California Rally Series schools we’ve hosted in the past. The second day will be designed more as a driver’s school with minimal in-class time (due to popular demand ). You will be able to spend nearly all day practicing in car with instructors and solo.

There’s initial discussion of a 2005 National RallyCross Championship. More info will be posted when available. In the meantime, the more SFR events you attend, the more points you get, the more likely you are to trophy and have a shot at Nationals.

Well, I need to decide which which class I'll be in. Techncally I could have run in SS4 last year but I went with SM4 to stay with my competition. I maaaaaaay run in SS4 this year.

Yeah, I hope the new rules are generally ok my people. We did tweak them a bit to make some things more clear, and some things less restrictive.

SCCA (from the National level) have taken more interest in RallyCross/RallySprint in 2005 now that Club and Pro Rally have been axed. Part of what came out of that are the new SCCA RallyCross rules and classifications which didn't really exist until now. Since there's talk of national and divisional championship series for SCCA RallyCross we wanted to be more compatible with SCCA (since after all, we are SCCA).

this is true. I think the rules need to be tweaked a bit more or i will have to have my car addapt. since im tuned in in the rally preped class with no other mods this is going to be hard to be a contender going against the modded sti guys..i dont know well see. I still cant wait. Also i think its funny how we have two different conversations on both boards to keep bumping the programrallycross rules all

So if I have no mods on my car except a cf hood, does that mean I have to go in the rally street class? Also, this is my 1st time with anything like this, would it be better to wait for the class in september?

Thanks

Well, things are a little bit more spaced out with the SCCA classifications. With the CRS classes Street Modified was basically "anything goes other than rally tires" so you could be stacked up against some STi or Evo with "insert anything you can dream of here" in Street Modified 4WD.

And yeah, two different conversations, but that's your fault for posting different questions in each thread. j/k. More exposure! Keep 'em bumped!

If there are particular items you think are wrong with the new classes let us know and we can discuss them. These classifications are certainly "hot off the press" and we've already made a few addendments for SFR.

Hmm... the rules seem to want to put cf hoods in rally prep but I think that's a little harsh. It's not like you're shaving 100lbs off the car or something. I'll discuss that with the other folks and see about moving cf hoods and trunks into rally street.

Also, come on out, don't wait for the school! There are always a lot of first timers are the events. It's all pretty laid back and you can run as fast or as slow as you feel comfortable. When it comes down to it, the basics of "slow in fast out" generally work just the same in the dirt. You can also chat with the regulars/organizers for some quick tips in the dirt - everyone is always glad to help.

FWIW, I think the CF hood should be OK in Rally Street.I also think that certain kinds of body work should be ok in that class - for instance, removing an STi's rear wing, swapping rear deck lids between a WRX and STi, or swapping an OBS/RS hood with a plain one. No widebody kits or extra brake ducting or anything else uberfancy though. We'll put this on the agenda for discussion and should have the rules clarified well before the event so everyone can...well, can ask more questions.

well if it goes national wont the classes be more strick to count towards points..i mean the sfr has some great drivers, skyler, hoche, and many other drivers i think could take on the rest of the country. By the by hoche did you get together the gti yet or will the obs rise again to victory?

Yeah, National would use the unadulterated SCCA RallyCross classes, but at the same time the official rules allow the regions room to change things a bit as needed. Keep in mind that these national rules are still very "raw". How things will translate to national championship points isn't quite nailed down from the national level. Initial speculation/discussion has been that if you trophy in your region, you move up to Nationals (or maybe divisionals first). So - adopting the SCCA classes makes things (or will make things) easier to go with the flow on a national level. RallyCross has really been a grassroots home-brew setup for SCCA regions across the country so far. Now that National wants to try to get something more formal together it will take some time to iron out.

The GTI has its cage and suspension done, and is currently at the body shop getting painted, inside, outside, and underside. The engine's done, and the transmission should be done within the next two weeks. I'm trying to get it together in time for Desert Storm on April 2, but that's looking iffy. It will certainly be done before the first rallycross though.

I don't know if the OBS is permanently retired from rallycrossing (it might make a few appearances), but unless the GTI develops serious problems, I'll be running that this year. The OBS has sorta been getting outclassed at the last couple of events anyway.

As for Skylar's comments about National, they're spot on. Their rules are still rough, and since we're one of the bigger rallycrosses in the country, we have some opportunity for feedback, but a concensus has to be achieved across all Divisions for any changes to be effected at the National level. We (the SFR Rally Board) deliberated long and hard about whether to use National rules verbatim, go with Divisional's, use our established classes, or use a modified version of National's. We decided to go with a slightly modified version of National's with some clarifications and minor changes (for instance, we use .03 hundredths of a minute now for cone penalties rather than National's 2 seconds because we use clocks calibrated in hundredths). It should be understood by all competitors that if they want to compete at a Divisional or National level, they will have to abide by whatever rules are chosen for that event, and those may not be identical to ours. We tried to make it easy though - hopefully the mapping between our rules and National's is pretty clear.

Well, keep in mind the National Championship is pretty alpha right now, but from what I understand, those who trophy in their region would be able to participate in a national championship event which would be held somewhere "central". And personally, if that means Topeka, I'm not going.

There may also be some kind of Divisional Championship (norcal, washington, oregon) where a certain number of local events in each region would count points towards the overall Divisional title.

No membership required - $25 for SCCA members and $35 for non-members. Loaner helmets are available for free if you need them.

Oops... didn't mean to hit the reply button just yet.

We have around 45-65 drivers at each event. It's definitely a lot of fun. It works like autocross in the dirt, except you get 4 runs instead of 3. The FAQ has a lot of good info... you should check it out when you have an unblocked net connection. http://sfrscca.org/RallyX/?faq

Pete Soper (psoper) will probably post a thread over at i-Club Bay Area Meetings and Events for the Rally to the RallyCross event - at some point.

There's also a rallycross thread over at i-Club as well that has a little more discussion.

Question regarding whether I go into Open2 or RP2 with my RallyX beater car.

The car is kinda, but not totally stripped. It has all the interior moldings and carpeting/sound material in the front half. The back half (the hatch part) has the interior moldings and plastic pieces but no back seat, carpeting, or sound-deadening material.

Open specifically allows completely stripping the car; RP allows removal of the seats.

I really don't care which SFR class I'm in as I'll be coming up to run for CRS points w/ their class system but want to enter the "proper" local class.
