News FEELER: VF-38 kit for 2.0l WRX.... Your thoughts?

I've been looking for a turbo upgrade for quite some time now, trying to find one that would be suitable for a daily driver, with low boost threshold and decent top end with a real smooth line connecting the two. I keep coming back to the vf38, due to its moderate (340 hp-is this exaggerated?) peak potential combined with ultra fast spool and low boost threshold. Ahhh, the benefits of twin scroll dynamics.

Now, I'm under the impression that the only option if one were to desire such a turbo on their USDM WRX would be to replace the header/up/downpipe (DUH), oil pump, oil pan, etc (I'm not sure exactly what interferes with the JDM twin scroll legacy header, but I get the idea. Its more than just the exhaust system.)

Understanding the requirements of building a harmonically tuned twin scroll header, Is it foolish to believe that a kit could be built that would require exhaust mods only to fit a VF-38 onto a WRX?

In other words, is there any obvious issue with designing and building such a header?

no, it's not foolish. i believe it can be done, certainly in fact.

you will have to watch the tradeoffs in packaging due to the larger oil pan shape. some bends will have to be less than optimal.

look at the synic/fujisubo style of EL headers, carry the split secondary up to the up pipe, and supply a port/gasket matched duel secondary up pipe.

consider offering the pipes with a thermal coating.

next, find a line on some dual scroll turbos in the 350-400whp range.

get everything out for a reasonable price and watch the kits sell themselves.

You are fighting an uphill battle. Realize that you have to look at cost/benefit analysis. Let's say you do this...you are looking at an expensive turbo, custom headers, oilpan, dipstick and tube, and uppipe. So you'll get 300ish WHP at around 3500 RPM for around $2000. Or you can slap on a 16G or VF22 or something in that ballpark and get the same performance for much less.

It IS a neat idea and there is a niche market for people that like the JDM bling or want to impress the sheep in the market with their "twin scroll" set-up, but they are really fooling themselves as there are many people here out spooling twin scroll turbos with regular turbos that are as big or bigger than the twin scroll turbos on the market.

Now I do no mean to poo-poo on your ideas, but just want to ground your sensibilities in reality before the "OMFG twin scroll insta-boost" ignorant savages show up and lead you to believe that you are on the road towards early retirement with this idea.

Kits and seeking interest is ONLY for paid Vendors on here, so either drop this idea or contact a Vendor to solicite this idea for you as what you are doing is against the site rules.

Thanks for the friendly reminder unabomber!

I've never posted anything of this sort before and I didnt even realize the rules before I did it...Rules Rule!

Anyway, I guess what I really wanted to know was the feasabilityof designing a header/up/downpipe that could use all of the stock oiling components. I was looking for some ideas as to why such headers aren't very common.

Personally, the vf-38 turbo seems very inexpensive, as they pop up on ebay for $500 or so quite often, usually new. Now, repalcing all of the stock oiling bits with JDM "bling" might be cool, but it is expensive. Thats why I want a header/up/downpipe that can do it with stock oiling components, and a $500 ebay turbo.

Thanks

I run a VF36 with tomei headers and love it. Pulls like an sti and sounds like an evo. They pull very smooth from 3,400 to 6,500. I'm putting down ~290whp and 305 wtq on a dyno dynamics. (Headers shift band to the right, but gain ~20whp) Anything more and I'll blow my gearbox...

But, before you, or anyone, considers a bolting a twinscroll system to your car, you need to experience it first, and feel the love. But, like sparkling Shiraz, twinscrolls aint for everyone, they are an acquired taste... As Unimagiggy notes, much cheaper mod paths out there for more powah gains.
