The new VW Golf R will be the fastest Golf ever, powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine producing 300PS and 280 lb/ft of torque, enough to hit 62mph in less than five seconds.

The Golf R with manual transmission will accelerate from 0-62mph in 5.3 seconds, while the six-speed DSG-equipped version will achieve the same sprint in just 4.9 seconds.

Both will have an electronically-limited top speed of 155mph.

Despite the huge performance, the R is more efficient than the previous model, recording 40.9mpg on the combined cycle for the DSG model, or 39.8mpg for the conventional manual version. CO2 emissions start as low as 159g/km, depending on the exact configuration.

Although powered by the same EA888 TSI engine as used in the Golf GTI, the R's version uses a modified cylinder head with unique valves, seats and springs, as well as revised pistons, injection valves and turbocharger.

The new Golf R will also feature the company's 4Motion four wheel-drive system to achieve maximum grip and ensure its power can be usefully laid down.

The Haldex-based system disconnects the rear axle in normal driving to reduce fuel consumption, but almost 100% of engine torque can be quickly transferred to the rear axle should conditions dictate.

The Golf R also features specially tuned suspension springs and dampers, and a 5mm lower ride height than the Golf GTI (itself already 15mm lower than a standard Golf).

Progressive steering will be fitted as standard with 2.1 turns lock-to-lock, while Adaptive Chassis Control will be available as an option.

Externally, the Golf R carries a new front bumper with larger air intakes, a revised grille with R badge, new daytime running lights integrated into the bi-xenon headlight units, R-specific side sills, black brake calipers with R logos, 18-inch alloy wheels wearing 225/40 tyres, smoked LED tail lights, rear diffuser and four exhaust pipes - two at each side.

Inside are sports seats with cloth centres and Alcantara sides, and bespoke R instruments with blue needles.

UK prices haven't been announced, but the new Golf R is expected to go on sale in spring 2014.

Derp. I even converted PS to HP.

That's still pretty impressive.

Besides the advertised 34 mpg combined driving and mqb chassis, the all wheel system will be lighter and the front differential is revised to reduce understeer.

I was scoffed at earlier this year when I said Subaru should make the AWD like this for MPG reasons (CAFE). I was told it would be insanely expensive and what not. I hope I can hold out for another year before making my decision but I don't think I'm gonna make it.

The BRZ and the Forester XT both have a combined rating of 25 MPG. Go compare specs and come back with the same conclusion.

I don't see why anyone would scoff at you, Haldex isn't anything new at all. If anything they were probably implying that it's blasphemy in the Subaru cult to want anything but full time AWD.

At least there will be a good alternative for those that don't want a new STI sedan.

Wish Audi would bring over an S4 Avant, I caught myself on autotrader looking at 08 S4 wagons, still looks good, no reason to buy it over what I have but it I love Audi wagons.

I'm seriously considering this now. I had a MkV gti which was great until things started to wrong with various electronics. Owning this with a warranty would alleviate those fears for me. I think it looks great and will be comfortable to boot

What do the 18" stock wheels look like? These are apparently the 19" optional... Which are too tucking big.

Well, this is pretty much my idea of the perfect vehicle........If I could afford to I would get a 4-door manual in blue with the base 18" wheels, load a bumper-to-bumper warranty on it for like 6 years/100,000 miles, and just drive.........

If the S3 5-door makes it to the US, how much more will that cost?

Even though the Audi won't look as good, at least it would mean not having to go to a VW dealer for warranty repairs

I'm sold unless Subaru can one up it. This car checks almost every box for me. Such a long wait though for it to be here.
