I shouldn't knock it as I loved that car, because it was $300 and lasted us about 50,000 miles over about 2 years. Also was a beast in the snow.

97 Jeep Wrangler. 2.4 I4. Soo dreadfully slow but great winter beater and fun in the summer.

08 VW GTi. 2.0t. I had this thing dumped on Faux BBS ch's. Fun car but German cars are expensive to mod and a bi?!h to work on.

96 Ford Bronco. 5.8. Another beater. I'm still working on this thing. It just kinda sits in my driveway.

00 Dodge Caravan. 3.3 v6. Another beater. I bring this thing around sometimes. 225k and still going.

11 Subaru WRX STi. My fav car so far. We will see how long I keep this car.

Plus jet ski, boat , and a motorcycle.

I've read all your lists and they are all pretty awesome. I think I'm getting to know everyone better from knowing what his car history is. You are what you drive? One common theme I do see is the great variety among our choices. In my dad's day most stuck with one badge, either GM or Ford. Today we have more choices and seem more free to experiment. Some of our choices as indicated in your lists were good some were bad but there seems to be agreement that the final selection of Subaru was no mistake and I concur with that.

I want to single out Tony's post because it is a comment I have seen in other boards and heard in my travels often. It is especially true regarding music. Tony writes:

Sometimes I feel like a teenager until I look in the mirror,Tony, but we have to play the hand we are dealt with. Most of the time I am happy I lived during the years I have and I'm not sure I would want to swap now. But we had our wars--big wars--and the draft, prejudices to deal with, fewer choices, and not nearly as much technology and invention as the present generation enjoys, no iPhones; but no sense going into details. Sure we have problems now but when I interact with the best of today's young people I am encouraged by what I see. That goes for all the people I was introduced to here during the half dozen meets I attended and it is my hope that these best traits in the best people will get us back into harmony again and continue the meets so we can talk in person too.
And another thing since this is primarily a car enthusiasts board. One aspect of today which is unquestionably better are the cars we drive. We may wax nostalgic about the oldies but goodies and they are nice to look at, but as everyday drivers, not the richest man alive back then could hope to have as good a ride as we have in our Subies today. I'll try to point out some of the PITA's we had to contend with in future comments.

Car: 1968 American Motors Javelin. Russet. Inline 6. Three on the tree. New for about $2200.
Comment: The Fiat fiasco left a sour taste so I went back to American cars. The AMX was a fantasy but the Javelin was nearer my budget and for economy I tried to replicate the old Chevy's platform. It worked because I was able to put over 100k miles on this puppy in eight years including another Trans Canada roadtrip. Sold it for a few hundred and saw it around town many years after.
The Javelin's weakness, imo, was its weight at about 2800 pounds. (Can you imagine the same chassis coupled with the huge AMX millhouse? As I recall, the AMX was over $3000. too.) Even with the little six, it was easy to burn out in this car. But the Javy was def a little light in the loafers and I had my first serious accident in it. I blamed the tires but thinking back, it was mostly pilot error. No PI so guardian angel was watching over us. Out of the body shop, I retrofitted to four new MichelinX tires. I've been a Michelin fanboy ever since. You can't go wrong with Michelin and they are worth the extra bucks.
The Javelin is a definite recommend.

I want to apologize for my last post. I got a little ahead of myself. In between the Javelin and the 244 I bought another car. It was 1972 and I was in my "Gangsta" phase. All the hoods on TV drove them--the detectives too--and that style car was even making it's way into song lyrics. Hadta havit.


Clues: Looking out the windshield over the long bonnet of this coupe you wouldn't see a Cadillac shield but there was a bomb sight style emblem there. The car was built on the same assembly line and shared many components of it's higher priced brother. What was this "personal luxury car" from Wixom?

Amen to that!

Back in the 70's nobody......and I mean nobody had a car that lasted 100k miles. At 80k, it was time to drive the rusted hulk to the junkyard. The back side of fenders were not even painted. Water collected everywhere. My first car....a 69 MGB was all of 5 years old when I bought it and the entire rocker panel was a big hole. Maybe 4 inches high and 3 feet long. 'Murican cars too. My buddy bought a 69 Ford van about the same time and it already had totally rusted out, been hacked with bondo and repainted. Wasn't till the 90's that rust preventative materials really came around.

It's still morning but the afternoon is only hours away. Fasten your seatbelts and come fly with me.


Before we get to the next car, do you remember the Villiers motorcycle? Returning home from California for the last time, it was sitting under a tarp in a pool of oil after being idle for a long time. Jack and others having owned English cars will surely recognize the oil leak phenomenon. I trailered it to the local Harley dealer. The proprietor looked like a Jesse Ventura with tattoos and big muscles and a leather vest to show it all off. When he went out back to look at the Villiers to give me a repair estimate, he took one look and sneered, "I wouldn't work on that piece of sh--." Me weighting in at 135 lbs. on a good day, I wasn't about to argue with his total disrespect for fine British engineering. I should have listened to him but that comes later. The Villiers ended up beside the trash bucket like the Fiat.

1972 Thunderbird. Black. V-8. Automatic. New@ $5100.
Comment: After all the four and six bangers I decided it was time for a big horse. But this filly turned out to be more of a Clydesdale than a Morgan and it needed lots of oats to feed it. Best thing about it was that after some serious horse trading at different Ford dealers I got an 18% off MSRP deal. The color was black (it's said once you go black you'll never go back) but it didn't have gangster whitewalls. They were Firestones. A few months after I bought it, I was racing a blizzard to the high ground in Flagstaff and was flying low along a deserted I-40 at in excess of 100 MPH out of Gallup, the fastest I have ever driven before or since. Two days later at a car wash, the operator informed me of a sidewall bulge as big as your fist. OE tires suck but my guardian angel was riding with me again. Visited a tire store in Phoenix and got four new Michelins. I kept the big Bird for several years but mostly as a second car. It was nice to look at but in reality a thirsty tank. Other than being pretentious it served no real purpose.
Don't recommend.

Now back to the two four four.

1975 Volvo 244DL. White. Inline four. Four on the floor. New@ $5500
Comment: Inflation was heavy in the seventies. I got only four cylinders for more money, literally half the bang for the buck. I went to a dual dealership with the intention of buying a Jeep but ended up driving home the sweet little Swede. Now there's a shift. Flexible customer or good salesman? You be the judge. I loved this car and drove it everywhere including a trip to the left coast and back CB radio equipped. "Breaker 19, Breaker 19. REDPETERBUILT this is EASTOFTHESUNRISE. That's a definite negatory on the beartrap at milepost 318. You can put the hammer down, come back." It got 20+ MPG and was tight as a you know what. I got my first speeding ticket in the Volvo. Forty in a twenty-five less than a mile from my driveway.
Not mechanically educated or talented like you guys, even I could change the sparkplugs which had a propensity to burn out in about 15k miles. Tony, that's one of the vast modern improvements--platinum plugs worth over 100k miles. It also started up even on the coldest winter mornings. It was made in Sweden, what would you expect? I was learning bigger is not always better which eventually led me here. But there were other mistakes on the road. Think British.
Recommend.

1956 Thunderbird. Black. V-8 Automatic. Used@ $7500
Comment: It was the most I ever spent for a car and it was twenty years old. Why? I did it for my wife who always had a love jones for these little beauties. Big disappointment. The car that is. I still see these cars and admire the styling and beauty and think it was one of the best looking American cars ever produced but it drove horribly. It wasn't particularly fast with the automatic transmission, steered like a truck and bounced like it had an unsprung rear end. Did I mention burning oil? The impending birth of my first child forced a sale. The best part is that to this day it is the only car I sold for more than I paid for it. It is a classic.
Don't recommend unless you want to put it in a showcase and look at it.

1982 Firebird Trans-AM. Red. (What else?) V-8. Automatic. (Yeah, I know.) New@ $10,000.
The Volvo was everything you could want in a car but I was having a midlife crisis or something and I needed a car with some vrooom, vroom. It was between a Trans-AM and a 450SL. Dreyher-Holoway in Exeter sold both and I test drove each one for a full day. My wallet made the decision. The 305 small block purred or growled depending on the throttle pressure, the steering was tight and the suspension was hard. I ordered it without AC for extra power. Equipped with Goodyear Eagles, baby didn't even need new shoes. The most "European" driving American car I ever owned. I removed the rear spoiler and went to a Napa store and bought a Ferrari key fob and cut off the emblem and mounted the prancing horse on the steering wheel center. Instant sex for $10,000. +$4.95. I drove it 100k miles and no tickets. Go figure.
Molto bella. Automobilisimo felice!
Definite recommend.

And I still have someone's books that I never cracked into. I don't want you to think I just took off with them (^^^). I always forgot about them and they've sat in my car on the back seat. I'd like to return them and maybe hold one to actually get into.

I couldn't think of any good songs for Wednesday, Thursday or Friday but here is one that is a good driving song for date night. Pump up the volume, guys and girls, but keep it under the speed limit as you listen for six minutes and fourteen seconds to a remix of The Saturday's "Notorious".



The car that got away.

Has anyone ever wanted to buy a car but passed up buying it and then regretted it? Ghibli: A fiercely hot wind from the Sahara Desert, Sirocco, a jet fighter aircraft. Also, the quintessential Italian GT that I should have bought and kept. And at the time it was almost affordable. I bet that no one has ever seen one.

It was a warm afternoon in the late 1970's. Saturday Night Fever was a big hit and stars like Travolta, Paccino, and DiNiro were on the big screen. I still had adolescent visions of Gina Lollobrigida dancing in my head. Everything Italian was hot. And then I saw it, parked in the front of a garage on River Street in Haverhill with a sign in the windshield that didn't say "For Sale" but which advertised what seemed to be an unbelievably low price. There.. was a light metallic blue Maserati Ghibli. Celeste Chiarro. It was amore at first sight!

A few minutes later I was buckling my seat belt on the passenger side. He wouldn't let me drive it but he offered a test ride. How could I say no? Cruising onto Route 495 he proceeded to demonstrate the car's stuff and as I glanced over at the speedometer I couldn't read the speed because it was in stated in kilometers/hr., but I did notice that the pointer was at about the four o'clock mark and pinned. 140 MPH? I don't know but we were passing everything and "the lines on the road just looked like dots".


Normally I am an apprehensive passenger even at legal speeds and should have been "white as a ghost" but that day everything about the driver and the car exuded confidence and even at this high speed I felt strangely serene even in my excitement for the ten or so mile run that flashed by in minutes. We made the exit curve at a velocity so fast you could feel the g-force in your stomach and yet I didn't flinch as we slickly merged into the two lane traffic at about 55 or 60 after some fairly hard braking. It was more fun than a roller coaster.

Back at the garage he lifted the hood while the V-8 sat idling. The sound. The black crackle finished headers (?) and the four shiny chrome Weber carburetors. Stepping back to look at the smooth lines, the form of the Italian sports car. Celeste Chiarro. Bellisimo! If I could be behind the wheel of that I would indeed see heaven on earth. I told the owner I would check with my mechanic.

At the time I was having my oil changes at Walton's Auto Lab in Newbury and Bob Walton knew cars. And he wasn't the kind of man who drove his father's Olds either. He always had a Ford Cobra, De Tomaso or some other similar exotic toy in the back of the garage for his customers to drool over while he was draining the SAE 20W out of their Saab or Corvette. For me the oil was in a four cylinder Volvo which was a far cry from the Ghibli of my dreams. I think Bob not only tuned his race cars but drove them on the raceways on the weekends too. Long story short, Bob said I would have to be crazy to buy a new Maserati let alone a used one. "You'll have to learn Italian, establish a phone connection with Modena, and shell out thousands of dollars for parts and be prepared to pay half my week's salary if you buy it." I respected his opinion and took his advice but now that the years have passed, as I reviewed the pictures for this story, I recalled the test ride, and I still fantasize driving the Ghibli to one of the Subie meets to give you all some exhaust music competition at least, I wonder if the reasonable decision is always better than irrational exuberance. Today, what was once almost affordable is now out of reach. Or is it? There are always new days and new fantasies:

So my strut fell out of the mounting bracket last week thanks to the last owner (put a lug nut on the bolt that holds it in place which would be fine if he used the right size but it was too big and wasn't even holding it -_-)

How many threads should I be able to see when I put the new one on?

Just spin it down until its tight. Use a battery impact gun.

John Fitch highway and all of its bumps/potholes :/ + an Eibach drop kit stiffened up the ride
