Default How do you wash your car during the winter?

Since I got my car I have taken it to those touch free car washes at gas stations a few times. After Mark drew a pee pee on my winshield the touch free didn't get rid of it so I took it to a do it yourself place. I really liked washing the car myself and it was much cleaner and for about the same price as the touch free. I want to wash it again to get rid of the salt but it is hella cold outside. Any suggestions or rituals you guys do is greatly appreciated.

self spray and deal with the cold. Make sure to dry everything including all door jams, gas door, trunk , this is mostly important on cold days so they dont freeze on you. I usually use a water blade to wipe it down fast then go over with the shammy. no sense being too anal about it over the winter as its just gonna get dirty againthe minute your back on the road.

I take mine to either an automatic wash with underspray, or Turtle Wax car wash where they wipe it down for you afterwards and stink up the inside of your car with watered down windex.

Haven't washed the beater since the first week of October ... So today I have to take it to one of those self-spray thingies...

those elbow length dishwashing rubber gloves help keep you from getting cold/wet. Also, fill the bucket with hot hot hot water to compensate.

I just pull into the shop and wash it.

What? nobody else here has access to a heated 10,000 sq ft garage with floor drains and a pressure washer?

Jason, hot hot hot water might not be the best idea. Warm water is okay but an instant change in temperature is not recommended (especially going from under 20F to way over 100F) Not good for the paint job and I heard of the glass breaking on somebodies car (they dumped a full bucket of hot water on a frozen car).

hondaslayer: You b@stard!!! hahaha plus you're moving to AZ where you'll probably only see snow if you go to some mountaintop or something

I suppose some local, enterprising shops could free their bays up during the winter for indoor car self-service car-washing... hrmmm. Perhaps tis time to talk to some people who know some people that have these things...

I hate having to wash the car in the winter, but you've gotta do it. I've only frozen my gas door shut once... bahahahah!

BTW, you've gotta be pretty darn quick to dry stuff off when it's cold out, else I swear the water almost instantly freezes.

I get at least 2-3 phone calls a year on that, hell even one of my techs did it on his SVX (nearly $1,000 mistake)

Yeah, I know.

We won't be moving for a few years at least.

Perhaps Pacific NorthWest instead of AZ. Gotta check it out first. I wonder if they are hiring at the Bigfoot research centre?

In winter, just let it go unless it's above freezing. Having the water freeze as you're trying to dry it is a pain.

I wonder if my new garage can do washes...

Isn't the salt bad for the car?

Yes, but washing it frequently is bad, too.

Like dents, you've got to really lower your expectations unless you're going to put David on a monthly detailing retainer.

Here are the ways I do it in the winter:

1) as stated, touchless wash at the gas station. Dry door jams when I get home. I do the "air dry" method. Not the best, but it gets the salt off, sometimes.

2) Coin Op on those 30+ degree days. Thank god there's some 30 degree days this weekend. Our blue and grey cars are turning white. I follow that up with highway runs to dry also.

3) move your arse and pickle soup's arse to a warmer climate where it doesn't snow.

Not washing your car is like not changing your oil. At least wash it when you change you oil people, at the very least!

On a warm day (basically any day where the temps are above freezing). Take it to a car wash of your choice. Other wise leave the crusted salt on the paint. It'll help deflect flying rock salt.

Treat the window seals and door seals with silicon based window seal treatment or something similar to keep water from freezing on them.
