With a kit lens you're relatively limited, but if you're shooting with a say, 18-70, you'd be better off shooting on the 70 end with a wide open iris, as a more telephoto lens with an open aperture will add those out-of-focus areas to the image that look pleasing to the eye. Getting the entire car in focus may mean shooting around ƒ5.6 or ƒ8, which could be positive in terms of overall image sharpness, but your background could also be tack sharp- something which may or may not detract from the overall look of the image.
thanks for the info, I was mainly looking in reference to as how the photo above was shot. At least now I'll know that I don't really need to go crazy with the numbers like I was before, lol. I'm still hunting down good spots and such at this time but they aren't easy to come by.

I was looking at picking up a sigma 18-70 something or another, it has a ƒ of 2.8-4 I think it was. it's like 360. Then once I'm able to I want to get the canon one that's similar but that one will be a while seeing as it's 1400, lol.... I don't exactly have lots of cash hanging around.

Later on I'll worry about a good telephoto zoom type. although I'd love one as soon as I get the camera affording it is another problem.... lol.

Again thanks for the ideas on this, I'm working to get things to a whole new level with the shooting I do.

I really like how this came out. The one thing that stands out to me is that the hills and plants in the background seem a little too washed out, especially when compared to the clouds. Thus, in that respect it looks a little unrealistic...but I do like the direction you're going
I checked that smugmug site out, not too bad for the pricing for a year.... 40bucks for the cheaper end of things. especially seeing as it's something that will make the photos stay as you edited them....

For his photo would it have been better to do 3 exposures? one for the car, then mountains then the sky? Would that have led it to be a blend you would think would have had a better flow?

Just wanted to know what people think of my photo taking abilities, just got into it last summer after my friends asked me to take pictures of their cars with my dslr. Open to suggestions for further improvement. Just a few pics of my buddies STI.

I don't necessarily think needed 3 exposures. The washed out nature of the mountains was probably something done in post processing, and not based on the exposure of the car itself. I would even guess that the mountains remained a bit dark even with the car correctly exposed in the original file.

These two rolling shots aren't bad, but I definitely would've cropped them so the window frame wasn't in the shot. They also have other cars in the photos, so I would've done my best to get a rolling shot of just the car you're shooting itself. Unfortunately it's hard to judge one's "photo taking abilities" on just a couple rolling shots.

I still like my idea of sitting in the trunk or bed of a pickup to take the shots. Then there is no concerns of window frame in the shot at all... lol. Just be sure that if it's a car trunk to prop the lid open so you don't get slammed in the head in the event of a bump in the road, shower rod normally works best for that one... lol. it's adjustable...

also the same goes for hatch backs... shower rod FTW.

in a pickup just take the tailgate off, that way you can get down and low on the shots. only problem with trucks is the stiffer rear suspension so you may need to consider better road choices.

The next alternative would be a rig shot but the suction mounts an get rather expensive!!!!! easily 150-250 each.

Been there, done that...for pretty much each of those situations you mentioned The problem with all of them though is that you can't really do that at highway speeds without a harness (I believe there's a Motor Trend photographer on here that uses one), which for me ends up being best for rolling shots. But then of course you need a closed course for those kind of shots...it would be incredibly illegal to do that on a public highway

this thread is going off today i wanted to practice my layer masks and merging of photos. heres an example i wanted to share to see if theres any progress. i feel i blended better on this one, and it doesnt look unrealistic. 2 exposures. one for sky, and one for car. also remembered not to over do it with the unsharp mask

Very nice shot, I dig it. I think it's just a little bit too contrasty though, since the entire underside of the car and the trees in the background are pretty much pure black. You're definitely on the right track in my eyes though!

yeah... out by me, no one cares.... I have an old harness that was given to me by a friend that we used for our shots that we did with his camera a while ago. We just tied off to the various points in the bed and good to go.

also you don't really have to go at highway speeds... just lower the shutter and make it look like you were... lol.

Actually, I just thought of a perfect road near me to do this on. it's in the back of a development that pretty much no one lives on. I think once the new cam shows up that will be where I will start some good stuff at.

You might be surprised how much highway speeds can add to a rolling shot and also be easier to shoot. Getting a nice, sharp photo at a 1/60 shutter speed with the car going at 60 mph makes it looks like you're going really fast...but getting the same look at 1/30 shutter speed and the car going 30 mph isn't quite as easy. In the end though, it all depends on the look you want to go for in a rolling shot...more definition in the spokes vs. more wheel spin.

thanks man i tried bringing out the shadow detail, but it wasnt happening for the exposures i had... but now that i have a better idea of merging what i want, i think i will have better results in the future

Thanks for the advice, still trying to figure out all the different things on Photoshop and what not. Can't really do the pickup truck or trunk idea, as the OPP patrol those highways and take those kinds of things very seriously. Good ides though, good for deserted roads. I believe that the shots that were taken by me were at 1/60 at about 150KM/H, sorry not into the MP/H and to lazy to convert but i'm guessing maybe 80MP/H, not sure though.

oh, well the roads i'm thinking of you could easily do 60 or so for a couple minutes before needing to slow down.

It's a 2-3 mile stretch of almost straight well paved road with like 3 houses on it.

I also don't like the whole "you have to link back to your Flickr photo" policy, along with many of the other restrictions on the freedom of how you use your images. Then again, that's could be also part of what you pay for with SmugMug.

I'm actually using a paid pro Flickr account too, so it's about as an apples to apples comparison as possible
I didn't even know there was a sharpening adjustment, I'll have to look into that. My free Flickr-hosted pix look almost exactly like the original, with the smugmug noticably softer, and the Photobucket looking seriously terrible. I'm not a Flickr fan either, I just use it for hosting, and I'm not even sure what they mean by linking back, so I just do what I want with regards to that.

Yeah, check it out

http://www.smugmug.com/help/display-quality

And according to Flickr, it says the following:

Quote:
Remember! Flickr Community Guidelines specify that if you post a Flickr photo on an external website, the photo must link back to its photo page. (So, use Option 1.)
From their guidelines section: http://www.flickr.com/guidelines.gne

Quote:
Do link back to Flickr when you post your Flickr content elsewhere.
The Flickr service makes it possible to post content hosted on Flickr to outside web sites. However, pages on other web sites that display content hosted on flickr.com must provide a link from each photo or video back to its page on Flickr.
Now, I'm not sure how strictly they enforce what they say in these guidelines, but the fact that they're there to begin with really turns me off.

I should also note that whenever I post photos, I always post the Original version, that does not undergo any of SmugMug's sharpening or resizing algorithms. Since SmugMug uses the original for prints, the originals always look exactly how they looked in Photoshop.

Not a bad photo, but not quite Armin Approved yet The horizon is level, but the car isn't quite level, which kinda throws me off. It's also super dark...definitely UL style, but not quite mine. It's very contrasty, which makes the roof of the car look blown out. It is a good shot though

I'm not too sure what I can do about the car being a little off, I guess it's just something to look out for. But I did fix the blown out roof. =)

Any better

I like the shot, but I would like to see more detail in the tires for some reason and also what is that smudge on the top right? Is that part of the shot or a really bad job of cloning something?

Also, what do you think about this shot Armin? I used a couple lit frames for the car and merged it with the rig shot.. does it look unrealistic?

I have a quick question for you guys... so, this guy stole my picture I posted here earlier, edited it badly, and is now using it on his website (http://www.awdsome.com/ca/Shop.html). My brother found out about it and contacted him (my bro's the one in the picture and that's his car), so the guy's sending him some free stuff. My question is... who's got more right to the picture? My brother or the person taking it (me)? Another question, if somebody wants to use your work on their website for whatever reason, do you contact the person in the picture for additional approval? Thanks.
