Car Wont Start... Fuel Pump Not Priming... Any Ideas?
I was having problems with my front 02 sensor... it was crapping out... still the car ran and I drove it from time to time to keep the fluids circulated, that is until the new O2 sensor came in, which it hasnt.
Anyway, the other night I drove it out... it wouldnt rev over 3k, then when I attempted to mechanically rev it over 3k by putting it in 2nd and releasing the clutch (ie- coming up to a redlight) the car backfired and the engine stalled. Since that I have not been able to get it started. At first I thought the o2 sensor completely crapped out (fromt the backfire)... but replaced that and no change. Then I noticed the fuel pump wasnt priming. I have a Walbro 255... plus a Vishnu Unichip and EMI board. Today I am gonna swap out the walbro pump for my stock unit and see how that goes... is there anything else I should check? Perhaps a specific fuse/relay... or wire that may have blown/been cut? The car is turning over just fine... no ther issues... please advise... Thanks, def

I had that same problem after installing my up-pipe and all I had to do was just hold the key on for at least 15 seconds and she finally fired up.

Look in this thread: Fuel Pump Options . Check all the points we talked about for 12 volts.
Do you hear the fuel pump relay click when you first turn the key? |

Check the #11 fuse in the fuse block by the driver's left knee. That's the fuse that powers the fuel pump. It's a 15A fuse, and it also powers the ignition, air bags, and something else I can't remember right now.

Did you install the fuel pump filter when you put that whalbro in? If not, you may have clogged the pump, or possibly, like you have thought, your wiring may have gone bad, or been dislodged. I dunno about that stock unit........ it won't run the right amount of fuel you need if you're going to be driving a lot. If you just want to see that it's the pump, then put the stocker back in, and if that fires your baby up, then you need to get yourself another 255lpm high flow Whalbro again..... or if you don't like them anymore, some other plug and play pump. I appreciate the responses... I know that the stock unit really wont be able to support the fuel requirements I need... I plan to run lower boost if that turns out to be the problem.
What I may do is just throw a multimeter on the pump harness plug to be sure the voltage is getting to it. If so then the pump is to blame.... if not... then Ill have to work my way forward in the car. I will have to check the #11 fuse... being that it powers the ignition AND the fuel pump, it makes since that this could be a bad fuse. Remember, an engine turning over is a function of the starter, not the ignition or the fuel pump. I really hope it could be sooo simple... we'll see I guess. Thanks guys... def |

I am an idiot... of all the things to think of... a simple blown fuse was one of the last things I checked (until Austins post).... sure enough, fuse #11 was the culprit. I mean I was gonna get around to checking the fuses... really... but, I guess the lesson here is, CHECK THEM FIRST!!
Popped a fresh one in and she started right up. Now the question is, why did the fuse pop. Well, my O2 sensor is definitely going bad. It wont rev over 2k when cold.... and when warm it'll only go to 3k. BUT, then it backfired once and all of a sudden it would rev smoothly to redline! Weird... kinda wonder if the O2 sensor isnt built up with carbon and the backfire cleaned it off or something (ie- carbon=running real rich= what I think below). But my take on the fuse blowing relates to the O2 sensor.... I think because its having issues, the ECU doesnt know the A/F, and thus out of safety it may be kicking the fuel pump up to super duty... the extra draw may be whats burning out the fuse... well see... I gotta data log to see what the duty cycle of the pump is... Thanks again guys!! def |
