Ported and polished stock turbo
What are the main advantages of porting and polishing a stock 03 wrx turbo? What type of gain can i expect to get out of it? A few hundrad rpm faster spool or a few extra hp?
thx ahead of times.

500 RPM (or so) quicker spool.
0 HP gain. 15ish torque gain down low. |

sounds lik ea good mod if you can do it yourself but if not, the cost is about 1/2 the way to a new vf22!

hey thanks master of FAQ. I was wondering too.
are there any distinct advantages of ball-bearing turboes over equivalent non-bb ones? EDIT: OH WAIT. I just read the faq... nevermind. |

I used a deadbolt P&P TD04 with a 'light clip' for almost a year and it was a great step up for the stock turbo.
The car felt like it had a small N/A V8 under the hood If someone HAD to stay with the stock turbo, for whatever reason, this is what I'd do/have done....no doubt. |

what are the risks of messing up if i were to port and polish it myself, from my understand, all p&p is you put the gasket on the flange and trim the metal so it is lined up with the gasket.

I did a mild port and polish on my stock turbo. Mostly all I did was take about 1mm of material off all the way around and the smoothed out all the rough spots. I also smoothed the WG port. I would have taken more off but I only had a dremel with the regular grinding stones. If I had a carbide bit I might have take more off. I noticed some small gains in spoolup after doing this. Also for some reason the EGTs seem to be alittle lower. I dont know if the p&p was the cause of that though. |

I can ship my turbo to deadbolt and get a P&P for $200 I am not trying to be obnoxious, it's just that everyone seems to overstate the cost of the P&P. It could cost more but doesn't have to. |

Its because $200 is alot to spend for the gains that you get. For another $200 you can get a reflash that will have produce much more power than a ported stock turbo will.
Then again if you have a reflash and other mods and you dont want to fully upgrade the turbo then this is probably your next step. |
