Default Stock sti springs on my 2.5i?

Ok i know ive heard rumors about stock STI springs being an upgrade for the forester and rs's so... i found a complete set of 06 sti springs to put on my 06 2.5i on ebay shipped to my door for 30 bucks. my questions are:
1.direct fit or some mods needed?
2.if they fit are they going to harm my stock struts?
3.if any what are my gains going to be?
4.killer deal or go with an aftermarket spring?

lookin for any type of help i can get...i really appreciate it!

They bolt on without modification, are a great bargain upgrade, and are fine for your stock struts.

Here's an old pic of my car with '04 STi springs, back in the day

the answer to #3 is stiffer spring rates, a slight drop, and huge savings by spending only $50 for a set of sti takeoff springs.

How much stiffer? How much drop? Any performance improvements?

increase in rate is more than 50%, drop will be less than 1/2"

So it will 50% stiffer? That small of a drop doesn't even seem worth the effort.

People don't use STi springs for the drop they use them because the stiffer rates decrease bodyroll and increase handling.

Drastically improve handling or just a little bit? Is the improvement in handling worth the trade off for less comfortable/stiffer springs in a DD?

Well it will handle better, but on stock tires, mushy 2.5I top hats, stocks sways, endlinks etc you will not see as much benefit as if you had good tires, aftermarket endlinks etc, but it will still be ALOT better than the stock springs.

I don't have stock tires. I have some Potenza RE960AS. So with just tires and springs, there will be much less body roll and much better handling? How easy is the install?

What tire size are you running? For instance a 205/55/16 is going to have a lot more sidewall flex/tire rollover than say my 225/40/18's. I can tell you if you can turn a wrench and have jack stands etc probably 2-4 hrs. Took about 4 to swap struts/springs on my 03 with plenty of bs'ing, smoke breaks, lunch breaks etc. Set aside the afternoon. Having an extra set of hands to get the struts back in will considerably shorten the reinstall time.

Stock size. Is there anything particularly difficult during a spring install? Is there a tutorial somewhere I can look at? Thanks for your help man!

If you're new to this rent/borrow a spring compressor from your local nationwide autoparts chain. Have a BIG breaker bar handy, and a good torque wrench, airtools helpful.

They will physically fit everything you have now. However, I would place upgraded struts in the "mods needed" column

2.if they fit are they going to harm my stock struts?
Due to the fact that the springs are both lower and stiffer than your stock springs, the USDM STi take offs will shorten strut life as compared to strut life with the stock springs. However, considering that they aren't stupidly low and they're not stupidly stiff, it's not like you're going to kill the struts this month.

Quote:
3.if any what are my gains going to be?
The primary benefit to any increase in spring rate is the ability to take advantage of stickier tires, which means you'll be faster once you get stickier tires. All the other effects are just things that make you smile.

Killer deal. USDM STi take off springs are the best springs for someone who is looking for performance (not looks) and isn't going to run r-comp or stickier tires.

I own an RS and I have USDM STi springs (and upgraded dampers) on it. I LOVE it. That being said, you're going to be VERY underdamped with the STi springs on RS struts. This will definitely prevent you from seeing the full benefit of the springs and, depending on your personal tastes, may make the ride feel like crap (improper damping bothers me more than high spring rates, some people are the other way around).

great, thanks. I'm currently running JDM STI takeoffs on my stock 2.5i struts, nice and stiff but feels floaty at times, so have been planning getting the Group-N tophats and Tokicos. Good to hear they seem to be approved
