Nice work, but frames

I am not a fan of them, but thats just my opinion, other then that looking good. Flash is great, maybe try to encorporate more of it then just the menu buttons, since that is something that can easily be done in javascript. Nothing too flashy (no pun intended) but versitile and clean.

You don't like frames, and you'd rather he incorporate Flash and Javascript?

Are you on CRACK?

I dislike frames as much as the next guy, but stick to HTML. Dynamic "content" is overrated and underportable.

Underportable?

php, perl, CF

All are crossplatformable (err making my own dictionary as I go) True that for simple sites pure HTML is prefered, and if you don't have the server to back it then you can't go wrong.

However, tables with include files (for menu's and such) is much cleaner look, gets rid of frames and is supported in almost any langauge, shtml, php, asp, cfm ....

I am a dynamic content fan, of course I am in charge of making our ticketing systems, forums, online signups here at work, so I guess I am a little bias.

No problem. Underportable is a fake word too.

I never said anything against server-side dynamic file generation. I did specifically say that Flash and Javascript (as client-side dynamic content) are even worse than frames.

I wrote my fair share of dynamic content, and am something of a CGI guru (particularly with Perl). My main point was that if you consider frames to be a nuisance, it's counterintuitive to then find Javascript and Flash to be less of a nuisance.

Not trying to start a flamewar, but I guess my point is to stick with simple tables and basic graphics... it's amazing how nice a site can look with simple, solid design. (The current http://planetkris.com is a good example.)

I spent all of 1.5 hours if that making that POS site. I call it like I see it.

I'm not about to drop 50 man hours into creating a site that says This is my car, there are the products and this is what I've done.

Sometimes, you need to see the forest for the trees. Simpler is many times better. Programmers, like myself and others, think the more code you throw at a site, the better it is.

Tell me, because a tri-fold brocure isn't dynamic, is it any less effective in getting it's message to you than a double sided piece of paper? Afterall, they both are double sided pieces of paper, just one is folded.

Like I said, this is the 1st iteration of it and I'm looking for feedback. Any of it is welcome and I appreciate what I've seen thus far.

Well the front page looks good, but because I don't have Flash, and I'm not allowed to install ANYTHING on this PC (security is clamped down pretty tight), I can't see or use the menu bar - therefore I can't see the rest of the site. If it was me, I'd just use some image there instead that the whole world could click - well, except maybe text-only browsers.

But what I can see looks quite good. I'm not a fan of excessive frames, but this isn't excessive. In fact, it's pretty much the same layout I'm using on my site. (Still very much a work in progress, lots and lots of dead links, I know, I know - and I'm not trying to jack KC's thread - if you want to talk about my site and it's pathetic lack of Suburu info thus far, start another thread )

http://www.jerocity.com
have also used it allot on
http://www.simlinks.com

The sub pages are crap right now, all I have is pics of my car, the rollovereffect on the main page is done in style sheets and works in browsers ie 4+ and netscape 6+, and Mozillia and Pheonix for all you corporate browser haters

Feel free to steal the code you see

Oh, and which filter/effect did you use to create the buttons? Or did you just steal them from Apple?

Looks good KC. Just a few thinkgs I thought of right away:

1. You show the "links" twice (a list on the homepage, and then also when clicking the "Product Links" botton). I like the Products link button to a new page, and would suggest you just remove the "Product links" content from the front page.

2. In the "articles in print/pictures in print" section:
Maybe you can photoshop a "highlight" onto the text specifically about you? Just a nice touch I have seen. I have no idea how difficult something like that is to do. Might take too much time.

3. "Modifications Button" linnk on home page just links to home page. I like the home page with the car pic w/mods listed, so I'd just get rid of the link button. Just my opinion though.

4. Again, just an opinion of mine. I'd like seeing sections for "Pics in print" and another section for "Articles in Print". That's just me. I like to look at pictures and skip the reading.

Looking good though. Wish I could make a "POS site" like yours in 1.5 hrs.

Have to chime in on the "untitled page".

At least add: "Welcome to my Garage-Majal" or something.

Looks good. Basic yet classy.

I would use the same background color for the Pics in Print page, to keep the feel the same. Use either the light gray in the Pics "2002 Season" section in place of the black on the Modifications page (Suspension, Engine, etc...) or vice-versa.

I like the black on the Mods page, as my vote on which way to go.

If interested, I've got a pic of thine wagon at the staging line, all stickered up. (One of the Deven's events...)

It looks fine to me. I'd rename the 'Mods' button to 'Home/Mods' or something though, as Paul mentioned.

KC,

Coming from a noncomputerapplicationsliterate person (I can make up words too)....stolen from a German translation.... I like the site. Plenty of naked women in exotic situations, excellent in car moving rally footage, the classifieds section is second to none and the close up of your tools in the lake with the fish swimming by is priceless. Keep up the good work and if you need to use the engine hoist to quiet your critics, you know where I live.

KC, I think the site looks great. I'd love to see you add a few comments or stories- maybe some commentary about having a race-ready daily driver.

And since there's lots of folks interested in tech stuff, maybe a couple little paragraphs about your various installed parts, how they've affected the car, perhaps a story about your destroyed Rotas and how that was resolved, etc.

Maybe a car mod timeline? I've seen a couple car sites where people have documented how their car has evolved into it's current form, and I always found that fascinating.

Anyway, it looks pretty darn good.

A couple of thoughts:

Ditch the frames. Frames become quite the hassle to maintain when resizing windows. If you want something thats easily generated, sure to translate from browser to browser, and takes care of resizing go with tables. Those more programming literature php, perl, and java guys will probably scoff but a common mantra among many webdesigners is becoming, "keep it simple stupid."

Make sure you maintain a flowing and CONSISTENT color scheme. Your site does a good job of this except for the pics in print section. Keeping the colors the same gives the viewer a sense of flow and formality. People want to know they're still on the same site when the click a local link. Choose three colors that all work together and stick with those. Design an identity and keep it.

Good start too. I like your minimal use of graphics on the first page. The site loads fast enough and your split of information between the sections makes each page managable. Keep up the nice work!
