Default Autometer oil pressure gauge...is it dead?

I have an electronic autometer oil presure gauge that doesn't work at all right now. The oil press. sender came ungrounded while I was driving and it caused the gauge needle go haywire and move very rapidly for a few seconds..after that few seconds the needle just dropped below the 0 psi reading and it lays against the side of the gauge. When I got home I grounded the sender again and there was no movement from the gauge needle. Is this gauge dead?

Possibly, the meter movement could have suffered terminal damage. You can check across it with an ohmeter to see if the coil is still good or if it is electrically open, but if the needle no longer sits in the normal position the movement may have had it, they are very delicate. Most likely time for a new one.

Tap on the surface of the gauge with your finger to see if it comes back alive again.

I have an electric oil temp gauge which used to do that until I rewired and moved the sensor to a different spot. The gauge just moves to either side and stays there until I tapped on it or I hit a big bump.

I tapped on it several times...but there was no movement. Im afraid of tapping it too hard and breaking it. Perhaps a little road movement could get it working again.

If I needed to replace it...would it be practical to get a mechanical gauge that was liquid filled?

If you already have the sender and wiring in place for an electrical gauge, then it would not be "practical " to put in a mechanical gauge. It would be a big pain

The autometer tech guy told me to touch the sender wire to ground...and if the needle went to 100 it would be fine.
I tryed it... no dice. It looks like the thing is snafu.
