Default Is it dead?

Posted this in the NA forums to, but I am looking for all the help I can get.

Ok here is my situation. I am prepared for the worst (new motor).
Driving today normal speeds I start to hear a faint knock, turn down radio listen to try to figure where it was coming from. Well it got louder and definitly from the engine and then engine started to die/ sputter. Pulled off called a flat bed. Home full oil no check engine light. Loud as all hell coming from drivers side head definitly. So I pull the plugs. #2 plug is BLACK!!!!! carbon on wire the whole plug, OH and the electrode and the tip of the plug are gone! Next step replace all 4 plugs and wires use probe magnet to pull anything from #2. Just pulled a ton of carbon deposit. Put it all back to gether and i am still knocking.

So any ideas? Bent valve bottom end shot, etc. What is a new motor with install? Any used ones out there?

Oh I have a 2001 RS with 90,000 on it.

When you say

Does it look like it burnt off? Or broken off? If broken, something had to hit it, and if something hit the sparkplug, you can be pretty sure it hit other things, like the top of your piston, a valve, the head. Basically all the things you don't want to ever take a hit by anything.
You can probably find a new long block cheap enough, but the labor is going to eat you alive unless you can do it yourself with help. Or have a good hook up with a decent mechanic.

Its an RS. It is easy to replace the block.
Pull the block and take the heads off and take a look.
Short blocks for an RS are cheap. And I've got a spare set of SOHC heads if you need them. People have lost chunks of piston and were still able to reuse their heads. The only thing you may have problems with is if the heads became warped from lost coolant.

Chances are that your head gasket has failed which has caused a loss of compression on most of your cylinders.

check ur ic piping i know i was smoking black smoke. Your engine is definetly not cooling. Right make sure all the hoses are not leaking. Everything is secure. I actually had to call for a flatbed myself. My engine spewed black smoke, and eventually sputtered to a stock, and would not start. check for holes in the ic hoses, and ur cats(rare scenario) may be clogged which could be causing this problem

Let me add that it is known that the head gasket on the 99-01 RS tends to fail near 100,000 miles.

A lot of that black carbonization could be coked coolant. It tends to be stickier than regular carbonization.

thanks.

I may want to buy them heads!!!!

well if some one wants me to email I can give you the picture of the plug.

As for the head gasket. The engine is bone dry!!! full coolant no smoke nothing to make me think I have a leak of anykind, but could be wrong.

What the car sounds like is a rattle can when it is running. Feel free to stop by for a listen anyone haha. But while it rattles it also sounds stout. You know good exhaust not etc. I am hoping maybe just need for head replacement.

My old 99 RS had a bad gasket at around 100,000 miles. The only sign it had was that it had a tendency to overflow the coolant return bottle on hot days. No smoke, nothing else wierd. When I pulled the engine and checked the gasket, it had been leaking slightly at the edges.

The rattling could be a piece of the spark plug still in there or a piece of piston. Did you get a chance to do a compression test yet?

Havent had a chance to do a compression check yet, not really sure how to do one. I unfortunatly know just enough to be dangerous to my car and my self. I tried to fish out the rest of the spark plug with a magnetic probe but just pulled up alot of carbon, so it could very well still be in there. What I would hope to do is atleast figure the exact problem my self and then if need be have a mechanic take care of it. Really not wanting to pay for diagnosis and then for the actual repair.
As for anything with coolant. No over flow in my tank or anything. I mean I have not had any coolant related problems I can see.
Any thoughts on timing belt slipping or missing a tooth?
I am just grabbing at anything right now.
Best part of all this is I am between jobs woohoo great timing!

Default I feel your pain...

Hi,

Sounds like we are in the same boat... Just before it turned 80000miles, my perfectly maintained (regular 3500mile oil changes with Mobil 1 synthetic only, changed fluids, always let it warm up, etc) 1999 2.5RS engine developed severe rod knock (listen to it here ). The dealership quoted me $3000 for a subaru longblock, plus $2500 for the install. Colorado Engine Rebuilders quoted me $2600 for a rebuilt longblock, and the cheapest used EJ25 I could find was 1600. I eventually found a used EJ25 with the same miles as my failed one for $1000, but was still stuck with having to pay $2500 for the dealership to drop it in, with no guarantees at all. No shop I talked to would touch my broken engine, and almost no mechanic in my area would do the swap for me anyways.
My solution was to get a JDM WRX engine; it is a lot easier to swap than the USDM WRX, it is a stronger block, and it costs a lot less. It also makes a TON more power than the EJ 25 (280HP STOCK! ). Won't pass emissions testing though... A fellow NASIOC member is helping me with the swap, making it semi affordable for me, but I'm still jacking up my credit card debt over the swap to a number I probably won't pay off for a year or two. Oh well. For what its worth at least I won't have that POS EJ25 under my hood any more. Rod knock at 80K miles? Give me a break!

the only car i ever heard with rod knock was a 3s-ge in my old '86 toyota celica. it sounded rythmic, consistent, and changed frequency in proportion to rpm.
