Why the outrage at fiberglass? You know the body is made out of it, right?

The modern vette bodies are made out of SMC, a reinforced plastic.

The bumpers are made out of urethane.. because they're bumpers and aren't supposed to show damage from a 3mph impact.

Fiberglass cracks from very mild impacts.

Fiberglass bumpers almost invariably develop cracks.. even ricers know this.

The car isn't even out yet, I'm sure there will be SMC version in multitudes of designs once the car is on the lot and can be properly prototyped.

Fiberglass molds are a lot easier to change then a injected plastic mold.

Isn't the new C7 using significantly more carbon fiber and composite material than the C6 used?

I had initially heard that the entire outside body was CF, but it seems that was wrong (too good to be true anyway). The Chevy website specifically says the hood and roof are CF, so presumably the rest of the car is something else. I think i read the vents are CF as well. They are also using real CF for the interior trim, anything that looks carbon fiber IS carbon fiber, there is no carbon-look material anywhere in the car.

The old ones maybe, new ones (as stated) don't. It's not the fact that it's made out of fiberglass either, it's the price for such a crappy material. I could see maybe $1k for that, which is still loads more expensive than your avg ebay ricer bumper, but not a penny more. They basically already had the mold (the current rear end) and just had to adapt it. If it was CF, 2800 is fine...

Yeah. This is the best info I have found so far:

Quote:
C7’s use of materials includes a standard carbon-fiber hood and roof panel, supplied by Plasan Carbon Composites’ new Walker, MI, plant. Plasan has innovative manufacturing processes that shatter previous autoclave-type processing times, getting per-part processing down to 17-min machine cycles. For more detail, read this AEI article.

The unique balsa-wood-sandwich floor construction of the C6 Corvette has been superseded on C7 by a new carbon nano-composite floor pan that is lighter while maintaining strength and stiffness, said Chief Engineer Tadge Juechter.

C7’s front fenders, doors, rear quarter panels, and the rear hatch panel are made with lighter-density sheet molding compound (SMC) than the previous generation. The door outer panel measures 1.2 mm (0.047 in) thick and the inner panel 0.8 mm (0.031 in). Combined, the body materials and their design/engineering save approximately 37 lb (17 kg) vs. the C6 body structure.

http://www.sae.org/mags/aei/11722
Looks like carbon fiber, carbon composite and SMC make up the stock C7 body material. Along with aluminum for chassis obviously.

No handle to open doors on the inside. Thumb button as you put your hand on the door. Grab handle, push button with thumb, push door open. Not sure how I feel about that. What happens if the battery dies? I do like the push-button start, but that's not "new". It's just different from the last Corvette I've driven (C5). I like the new seats. Much better bolstering. Driver's seat and surroundings remind me of a cockpit. I think the height of the center tunnel for the drive shaft has a lot to do with it, but it gives me a warm, fuzzy, happy feeling.

I imagine the doors will work the same as the C6, which has been fine for a decade. If the battery dies there's a key in the fob that you insert into a slot above the license plate. This opens the hatch/rear compartment. Inside you will find two cables on the driver's side. One opens the driver's door, the other opens the gas door.

How can you get to the license plate if you can't get out of the car?

There's a manual release handle for the door from the inside as well down on the floorboard where most trunk release handles would be.

here you go...from the Manual:
Quote:
If power to the vehicle or the keyless access transmitter is lost, there are two ways to open the door. From inside the vehicle, use the door release handle located on the floor next to each seat. Pull the handle up to unlock and unlatch the door. From outside the vehicle, use the door release tab located on the carpet inside the trunk on the driver's side of the vehicle. Pull the tab to unlock and unlatch the driver's door. See Hatch/Trunk on page 2-14 for information on opening the trunk during a loss of power.

I think the point is you shouldn't need a manual to get out of a car. Creating inconvenience while adding nothing is stupid design.

Agreed. You aren't saving any weight by adding a switch AND still maintaining a manual release. IMO a well shaped door handle has a better appearance than a ****ing button in the middle of the door that detracts from the otherwise clean and smooth appearance.

There isn't a button on the door there's a cutout at the edge of the door that pops it.

Wonderful. More crap in a car that's waiting to go wrong. My cousin had that kind of fun when his C6 crapped out on him in that manner. Probably part of the reason he traded it in (though he'll never want to admit it).

If you don't like gimickie crap, or want to at least minimize it, buy a lotus. I imagine MOST people that buy these cars enjoy the gimmickie crap because it's "cool" "futuristic" "other buzz word".
Screw it, I'm building my own car from the ground up, with no R&D money other than what i have in the change jar on my desk in my home office.
crank windows, manual locks, no AC, no TC, no TPMS, none of that.

Yep, sounds like both my cars except for the manual windows and locks. Both of which actually offer a valuable and easy to use function.

I know there is a cutout on the exterior. There is a little pressure switch in there like you commonly find for a trunk/hatch release. That is all fine and wonderful. I was complaining about the little button on the interior door handle. It seems well placed for where your thumb will be when your hand is on the door handle to push it open, but it's still a button in the middle of an otherwise smooth, flowing surface.

Default Chevy shows much-improved 2014 Corvette interior in new video

Here it is.

Autoblog: http://www.autoblog.com/2013/02/11/c...-in-new-video/

Quote:
If you want a closer look at what went into designing and building the interior for the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette, we've got just the thing. General Motors has released a new video detailing the cabin's evolution from conception to execution, complete with commentary from Ryan Vaughn, performance car interior design manager with Chevrolet. The quick clip details how manufacturing, engineering and design within General Motors worked together from the first sketches to ensure no compromises had to be made later down the line. How novel.

With plenty of hides traced with contrast stitching and available real carbon fiber trim, the cabin looks to be a few hundred miles ahead of the C6. Given how readily critics derided the previous generation for its cabin, the C7 should make writers work a little harder to find something to complain about. Check out the video below for yourself.
