Apparently all wheel drive cars need to have very similar diameters on all four wheels or else there is danger to your differentials. Depending on the age of your existing tires, you will want to have your single new tire shaved to match their as worn size. Or perhaps you should just replace all four, depending on their mileage/age.

Not only do you need similar diameters, you need all 4 of the same tires. For example, you can't have 2 225/45/18 Michelin's and 2 225/45/18 Pirelli's. However, if you have over, I believe, 7/32nds of tread on the other three, you should be able to replace just the one you blew out.

Myth Buster: If you blow one tire you do NOT need to buy all four NEW tires. Measure your depth of your existing tires (they should NEVER have a larger diameter difference then 1/8" between ANY tire ~ use a sewing soft measure tape to measure this).
When you have your average tread depth (use a tread depth gauge ~ any good tire shop will have one ~ or the Tire Rack will send you one) call the Tire Rack and have the new tire (same brand/model and size) 'shaved' to match the existing rubber. It will cost you an extra $25 ~ but save you from buying 4 new tires. Pass it on! |

Don't run different tire brands (as the actual rolling diameter is different even between tires of the same size) and don't run 3 bald tires with one new. |

Subaru.com recommends all tires be within 1/4" circumference, which is about 5/64" diameter. circumference. http://www.subaru.com/common/faq/tech_info.jsp#4 Last edited by Howl; 10-30-2007 at 10:06 AM. |
