new with a question about 2011 STI sedan vs. previous STI sedans
So I'm looking for a new daily driver.
My question is this. From all the reviews I've read the 2011 STi is almost a second slower in the quarter mile vs the 06-07 STi reviews I've read. I'm not sure why. Seems the engine hasn't changed much and they haven't gained any weight. This will greatly effect my decision as a 14 second sti vs. a 13 second one is a considerable difference. I don't plan to drag race this car but performance is in my blood and a 14 second daily driver is not cool unless it's a jeep haha. Thanks in advance.

Where are you getting the 14 second times from?

here's one. another one I read was untested but estimated a 13.5 as that's what their 2010 test model did.. still .4 slower than the 06 test reviews I've read. |

I'm mostly curious if the 06-07 didn't have the adjustable valve timing on both intake and exhaust.. and if that could be the difference as the trans and internals seem virtually unchanged. Thanks.

The new STI's are 3 seconds faster around the nurburg ring if i'm not mistaken and thats a BIG improvement. IMO these cars are not made to be driven in the 1/4 mile buy another car if all you care about is 1/4 mile times.

1/4 mile is by no means all I care about. If you did read my original post my concern is to why it's slower and if it is actually in fact slower. 1/4 mile is a means to judge weather or not it is slower in acceleration or not. I have a camaro and mustang already for drag racing purposes. I just don't want to go slower if in fact the 06-07's are a second quicker. I'd just as well buy one of those since I wont be driver in germany very much most specifically at the 'ring.'

So what you're saying is, you don't care about the actual performance, you just want to sound good? That's definitely how it reads. It's like being concerned that you can't tow an 8000 lb trailer, but you don't plan to tow anything anyways.

LET'S TRY THIS.. LEARN TO READ MORON. What I'm saying is I'm not gonna drag race the car.. But I want performance.. is that simple enough for your inbred mind? I have two single digit cars to drag race with.. I just don't want something mundane to drive around and if the new one is in fact an full second slower, I'll just as well buy the older one so I can still have a QUICKER daily driver. So let me ask u this, if I don't plan on drag racing the car should I just not own a quick car? why is it that subaru would even bother building a performance oriented car. DOES EVERYONE that buys it go to germany and race it around nurburgring? or do u all just own one and act like dicks. I remember why everyone hates ricers again. oh and I think u missunderstood my 'not cool' it has nothing to do with being cool in a parking lot. It was meant as a figure of speech but I didn't expect you to pick up on that. |

really asking a legit question about why an unchanged engine, trans and similar weight car lost a full second in the quarter and 3 tenths in it's 0-60 times is pretty valid I'd think.
I've owned and raced plenty of cars from bmw's to american muscles. I don't know much about subaru's so I thought I'd join here. Obviously nobody here knows very much about cars either so they just divert their lack of knowledge with ******* responses huh? Maybe if u guys learned something you wouldn't have to be such dicks and you could actually answer a question. Just sayin. |

how is it off topic dude. I asked a newbie question as a newbie. Instead I got a buncha guys that DON'T know the answer offering their opinion about me. and I guarantee I've built faster drag race and Time attack cars then all the dicks that have had to offer me their .02 in here. I just don't know much about this brand simple question but ignorance breeds intolerance I guess.

I'm sure some people are just jealous. For me, the 2011 STI was not an option, too expensive. The 04-06 STI's used were similar in price to a brand new 2011 WRX, so I went with that. Performance wise, these cars haven't much changed, don't look at magazines, in all honesty, straight line speed will be very similar stock for stock. I have never had the opportunity to drive an STI, but I can say the 2011 WRX stock beats the hell out of my old 2005 LGT stage 2. I've had guys in heavily modded Mazdaspeed 6's and srt-4s try to race me and my stock car either stood neck and neck or just beat the piss out of them lol. With that being said, I feel like *making* power on these newer cars are easier, a simple stage 1 tune seems to make more power than it used to. I also think handling has improved, but Subaru needs to get their head in the game when it comes to power, it's been the same thing for 6 years now. Although, I do commend them in the fact that all their cars stock being under 300whp can still hang with some really powerful cars which just goes to show you.
If it were my decision, I'd jump on a 2011 STI right away. Interior is nicer, handling is nicer, design in my opinion is nicer. A little less obnoxious in a way. I don't know why, but I have always liked the LGT and the 08+ wrx, but for me the big box scoop and huge wing is a little much. Which is odd seeing as how I'm one of the younger members on here. Just got test drive them, and you will know right away which car is for you. I don't think a company would release a car that gets worse and worse through the years. |

Thanks I appreciate your time and response. I agree but about a company making a slower car or 'worse' but sometimes techonology can lead to better handling, fuel economy, reliablitly etc and leave behind some of the 'rawness' of the old days i.e. the evo X vs the VIII and IX. That was my cheif concern. I was stung with my m3 and learned the hard way how much money those cars end up costing when u have to go to stand alones, crate motors upgraded drivetrains etc. And how modern techonology can hinder aftermarket individuality and options. I just didn't wanna get caught in that again. lol. Thanks again, as soon as I find the right optioned car and take the plunge I'm sure I'll be upgrading it in my garage and having it tuned etc. I'll keep you posted. Thanks again! Tommy |

AWD vehicles are extremely sensitive to how you launch them. A bad launch, different weather conditions, a different driver, etc could have all affected their time.
Top Gear had an episode where they took two AWD supercars, and depending on who was in what car changed the results. The numbers on the specs said one car should have won every single time, but it didn't. Unless you're able to have some sort of launch control, it's very difficult to get consistency with launches. C&D got a 4.7 0-60 launch. That's pretty quick in my book. Additionally, it's been shown that the 2011 WRX is quicker 0-60 and 1/4 mile than the STI because of the difference in gearing. Remember the new STI is on larger wheels with wider rubber, which changes the ratios a bit. If you're looking for something based on purely 1/4 mile times then maybe the STI isn't for you, however if you want a car that can dominate pretty much anything in the twistys, and during poor weather, then go for it. Personally, I wouldn't base my decision on just specs only, go test drive both and see how fast they really are. Best o luck and I hope you get one! |
