Not a Subaru, but this one comes to mind instantly-
I used WD-40 and a paintbrush and 4 microfiber towels. Works amazing on 20 year old buildup of dirt and rustproofing. No joke. Car had been sitting for 10+ years.. I basically spent 4 afternoons/evenings total on it. STEP BY STEP 1. Go to the automotive store, buy 2 cans of WD-40 , 4 microfiber towels, paintbrush. 2. Open Hood. 3. remove battery, air filter box and arm, fuse box cover, wiper motor, map sensors assembly, coolant overflow tank, move away side wires and tubes on shock towers. 4. Start attacking the dirtiest parts with WD-40. 5. Spray and brush/agitate the grime/dirt 6. Wipe off dirt with towel. 7. Once all the bay is clean, you can buff and polish the paint around the bay and dress the rubber hoses with rubber and vynil dressing. Keep doing this until all dirt is removed. It takes a while, but well worth it. WD-40 wont remove the paint. Note: As you will notice, some parts were replaced/restored as well. BEFORE: |

I'd clean my jeeps engines in the morning, facing the engine east, I'd warm it up a bit, 5 min, then clean it with cleaner and brushes, rinse it off and let the hot sun bake it for a couple of hours.
A few on here suggested scrubbing bubbles, I will try that the next time. |

I also recommend Simple Green, it doesn't leave a residue that some degreasers do.

Your engine bay is cleaner than my kitchen! Does it accept reservations? Can I take dates there?

Thanks. It remained that way up to the time I sold it back in 2010. These are some of the last pics of the car that I took 6 years ago right before getting rid of it. .....it was nearly 8 years old at that time:
Kinda miss it. I didn't keep it because I already had 3 other cars (2 in my garage and one on the side of the house). Thought it might be a hassle. ....ffwd a few years later and I acquired a 4th ('86 4Runner). Had I known that, I would have kept it since it wasn't as big of a hassle as I thought. |

A car wash power washer shouldn't be too bad if I don't actually engage the trigger, right? Apartment living = No garden hose

Whatever you do, just please, please, please be careful around electrical stuff....especially the alternator.
Last year I decided to give my engine a quick cleaning before a road trip. I used Dawn dish soap in a spray gun, and was very liberal with the application, and didn't cover anything. I ended up frying a diode in the alternator, and had to buy a new alternator and battery (because the original ballooned like a pumpkin) while out on the road. Not very fun when you have to rely on the Advance Auto Parts guy to fumble around your engine bay for 1+ hour, when the job could have taken 10 minutes myself to replace the battery.) |
