I've heard the same from a different tuner as well: the VF48 holds boost longer; its better but not earth shakingly better.

When I mentioned the word 18G Jorge immediatly put me in check and suggested VF48 instead, I did however go 18G. I think it has been establised the VF48 flows similar to an 18G.

Worlds different. The VF48 may make good numbers on the dyno, but still it's comparing a 35lb/min turbo (roughly) to a 40lb/min turbo. That's like saying an 18G flows the same as a 20G.

I am not a VF48 defender, just repeating what the tuner said. The rationale at the time was if I went to a low psi the VF48 would perform similar to an 18G. To maximize 18G potential I was recommended to go to a higher boost, so I went to an 18G and will go for a higher boost tune (18G is still on display in my living room).

One thing is for sure, the VF48 has more top end than the VF39.

Haha. I have seen several dyno graphs that back it up. Jorge tuned a 4eat forester on 18psi 18g and I made 5more whp but he made 15 more tq. Both foresters, same trans, same exhaust, injectors. Different intakes and tmic(he had the better tmic).

And on high boost, I'm sure the 18g will move out

Now can we please stay on topic. If you have nothing to add I will ask you not post. Try and keep this thread on topic.

I really don't think we should be comparing the 18G to a VF48.. Compare it to the 30/34/39/43 family. You made 5 more HP but on a different day I'm sure.. We all know the 18g wants to run more boost so how can you compare?

Not trying to get back into the sidetracking (which I think is absolutely on topic, btw), but how is any 18G $2K more than a VF48? Maybe $200.

Sorry, just sharing opinions.

VF48 vs 18G about $200
Injectors $360
Upgraded TMIC STI vs TXS/Perrin/APS/Process West = $200

So max $800, and don't apologize we are on topic...Tuned200 is just having a bad day...

Lol. I was unaware 18g's were so cheap. I was thinking they were 1100 to 1200.

Sorry. I was off but now the question is is the extra 30whp worth the 800 cost? Wouldn't a meth kit net higher gains?

Anš since we are now discussing the 18g someone post a link to a good deal. I may just pick one up.

Yeah but look at the cost of meth kits on the market. And do NOT forgot you absolutely have to get 2 tunes done on your car: one tune for without meth, and one tune for with meth. Think about the cost of that.

And also think about the reliability issues with meth... think about the complexity that you are adding to your car as well. More parts means that more things can go wrong!

Financially speaking, you're better off going with an 18G and forget about the VF48 + meth.

Its not a black and white issue.

Wouldn't a meth kit + the 18G net even bigger gains? =P There is no replacement for displacement.. Bigger is bigger.. =P

Ok, so please correct me if im wrong

vf48+ stock injectors +tmic/pump/turboback=300whp and maxing out the stock set up

18G+ injectors+tmic/pump/turboback will net you 330whp.

Add in the added costs that v8 gtfo guy included and is it worth the extra $800 for 30whp?

Best bang for the buck is the ihi turbo upgrades for fxt/wrx cars?

I understand the flow ratings and all, but I dont see the benifit in spending the extra cash for 30whp. again, please correct this if im wrong.

TMIC...!? For me its FMIC or nothing at all dude!!

Once I do my swap next month, and I'm pretty much decided on going with an EWG (I hate the sound of my wastegate flutter!!), I'll let you know how my VF48 + pump + injectors + FMIC + EWG does on the dyno on 93 octane. I'm guessing not much more than 315whp with a safe tune @ about 700ft ASL.

Still wish I could back in time and not buy the VF48 even though it was very dirt cheap... I had planned on going 18G but when I saw the deal on the 48 there was no way I could resist.

a maxed out vf30/34/39/43/48 tune will net you near 315-320 whp, with meth the vf turbos sit maxed out right near 330ish, AND you wouldnt need injectors because your IDC's are lower.
