I wish they had a pure white option to make it look similar to the IS 350.

DIY FTW I guess now.

Are you the same guy from IWSTI? Like I said there, look for where the wires are going. Chances are you do not have the subaru kit if it comes on with the courtesty lights because the subaru kit splits the power from the cubby hole light.

Hey guys. I just got my WRX and don't like the blue illumination kit. I really want to change them to red. Does anyone know where I can order just the modules, as all of the wiring is run? Also, if anyone has a red kit and wants to trade I would be open to that, too. Thanks.

Yeah, same guy. No reason why it would be anything but the subaru kit as it came installed new on the car. I can't imagine a dealer would source an aftermarket kit to install when there is an oem one available.

BJMscot mentioned previously in the thread his kit does the same as mine from the factory. I'm in the US though.

They might have gotten it cheaper and added it on and charged you for the subaru kit I know a ford dealer here that puts on wings west kits at 200% markup and sells it as a package. Anything for profit. The best way to find out is to look under the dash and trace where the wires go from the lights. Also, check first if the lights look like the rectangles attached to the yellow/black wires. Those are the subaru accessory LED. Anything else would be aftermarket.

I crawled under there at lunch and snapped some crappy iphone pics.

The OEM STI kit is different. Not only is it wired differently, but it appears to use 3 of the shifter pocket led's instead of two footwells and one pocket led like you get when you buy it after the fact from subaru.

Here are the pictures.

The OEM LED red casing shown above looks identical, although seemingly longer, to this one shot by Dartholomew

So, now that we have established the factory installed footwell lighting on 09 STI's is wired differently than the kit you buy from the dealer, has anyone ever set the STI footwell led's to run with the headlights?

That is strange. The only way would be to cut and wire it to the pocket lights or another source of power when the headlights are on.

Yeah, I was thinking that same thing, or maybe even just cutting the wires and buying the kit everyone here seems to be installing. My concern though is that the plastic near the led's under the STI dash may be different and the new footwell led's won't have the correct mounting location to install properly.

They should be able to accept the accessory kit. Just buy the kit and you can have the OEM lights come on with the doors and the kit come on with the headlights it can be found for $40-60 I'm curious now, wonder if my harness has the plugs for that and I can just buy the LED block from the cubby.

You don't have to cut the wires, just undo the harness from the LED. I'm searching for the wire in my car, does it come from the harness that goes to the obd port? You could run both as the kit one just double sticks on the backside of the dash cover.

Weird, I had no idea the STI LEDs were different!

Well, this means if you buy the Subaru kit, you can just install them alongside your existing LED kit, and you can even leave the original harness intact. The new lights will stay on with your shifter pocket light when the headlights are on, and you'll get a little extra brightness on door open/close from the "courtesy lights" of your original kit. Kinda the best of both worlds, and you don't have to change anything.

I was curious so I poked around below my dash and found the harness for the LED on the passenger side but it will not turn on the LED under any condion. I had the door open and it wouldn't go on, the headlights on, it wouldn' go on. I'm wondering if they switched the polarity on the harness so that you can't just plug in the LED. I couldn't find the harness on the drivers side. I think it's burried and taped down behind the guages. I was thinking they had just taken out a fuse to disable it but I tried putting fuses in the empty positions and it still doesn't come on.
.
Also while under there, I found several harness connectors that aren't connected to anything. There's a big connector that looks to go to the ECU but isn't connected. Wonder if that's for keyless entry.

Is there a way to buy the OEM STI kit and would it work in the WRX like it does in the STI?

I think that the STI kit is a much more complicated wiring job than the oem kit you buy from Subaru. I'm sure you could buy the parts and install it, the question would be, is it worth the effort just for the courtesy light when the doors are opened. As Nacron pointed out, the STI kit is wired a little funny for some reason.

Any ideas if the OEM kit will fit a bugeye?

I think it would be easy to make it fit (just find a spot to attach the modules with the included washers, nuts and bolts, you can drill your own hole if you need), but since you'd probably have to find and tap the harness into the wiring yourself, it's not plug'n'play. If you've done wiring work before, I think it'd be pretty easy though.

The replacement is easy since you already have the kit installed (the only slightly tricky part, the wiring harness, is already hooked up). When you get the kit, just look under your footwells for where the light is coming from, remove those parts, and replace them with the ones that come in the kit.

Once you've done that, you should have a complete blue footwell kit sitting around, maybe someone here will want to buy it.
Thank you so much. I forgot about this post and I'm glad someone can get me the info. What is involved with replacing the cubby hole light?

Replacing just the cubbyhole light takes about 30 seconds if not less, no tools needed. Just pop out the light, disconnect it from the harness, connect the new light and pop it back in.

Just did my own using door lights from an old Pontiac. Cost? Free... did the wiring myself. Lights dim when i close the doors and shut off when i turn on the car. Installed in both driver and passenger side. Mind the crappy cell pic.

Not to beat a dead horse, but I'm hoping this helps a few of you...

I found it MUCH easier to simply remove the glove box to gain access to the passenger side. There was no way i was fitting my hand under to fish that wire through.

Removing the glove box is as simple as removing the support peg (simply pull) and pushing the side tabs of the glove box in so it drops out of place.

Frees up the entire side to find the wires.
