Default Alcantara DIY Interior | Installation and time-lapse | 2011 WRX/STI

After a couple months of slowly working on my interior, I've decided to compile all of the installation images and time-lapse videos together into this thread.

The interior is part of my build thread found (HERE) if you have any questions please feel free to head over there and ask!

Since I sell the material, I had plenty on hand. If your interested in trying yourself you can get your material here: Overland Designs.

Here are some of the completed shots.

All of the work was done in my home in Maine with simple tools. For the pieces with tough corners I used a Jiffy steamer. The glue used was DAP Weldwood HHR Contact Cement. It was all brushed on except for some early pieces where I used 3M #90 spray glue or equiv.

Here is the time lapse installation of the Alcantara on the top dash.

Here is the time lapse of the removal of the dash.

This is unbelievable! Great work... I remember seeing your separate write up for the dash gauge pod and was wondering to myself if you would ever post a separate all in one of your interior. The two tone of grey and black works perfectly.

That is one luxurious looking WRX

I noticed your total tally sheet in your build thread, don't see many guys do that. I apprecieate it as I think your car looks great. So total raw material was $321 from JPM? Thats not bad at all.

It's a tough call because it was stretched over a couple months but If I had to do it in one shot I would give it 30 hours with taking everything apart, installing the Alcantara then re-installing everything.

The total yardage was:

1yd of Steel Gray
2yds of Black

Wow.

At first I looked at it and said "ok, where's the Alcantara" then I saw the rest of the pics, seemless almost OE appearance. Great job.

Holy moly! That looks awesome, man! I'm curious about a ceratain technique... when you wrap pieces like the cupholder assy how do you make that transition between the unwrapped section and the alcantra? Glue it down and then trim with an extremely sharp instrument?

Hey thanks for checking out my thread, I'm glad to finally get it all back in the car and out of my living room!

Yeah, the material for all of that was three yards @ $99/yd plus glue and brushes. Just a lot of time and patience learning the material.

Yupp, I used painters tape to mask the part where I don't want the material and adhesive. Then I glued the whole piece and when the glue got tacky I removed the tape and began to cover the piece in Alcantara. I made a rough cut of the material first so I can see the shape I'm going to need to cut. Then in one shot I did the final trimming and it worked great, hasn't pulled up yet!

Great work man it looks amazing! I've been thinking about trying this myself since im nowhere near JPM and you just gave me the inspiration to do it. I wasnt sure if it could be done well by someone that has never done interiors.

And yeah, being in Maine makes me far away from everything. Might as well be international.

Thanks!! It's doable and really fun to see it all come together at the end. You just have to be confident and start with smaller, flatter pieces to learn how the material reacts to certain curves. Once you know it's limitations you can see how to lay the material out so you'll be able to cover every piece without having bulging creases everywhere.

One thing I've been wondering is, how did you know how to dismantle all the interior pieces?

Queens NY, if you were still here I'd totally hire you for the job! Are you anywhere near Rangely? I go up there once in a while for quick little vacations.

I had a performance shop in NY for years and before that I worked for Alpine electronics. I've probably taken 500 interiors out over my lifetime. After you take a Mercedes SL500 convertible interior out, you can take anything out!

In all serious, it was really easy to take this apart. If you have any questions on how to take something apart, just ask, love to help!

Rangeley Maine is almost 3 hours away from here, a nice drive but a little far!

If you're still in the vehicle upholstery business.....I'll definitely hit you up when I get more funds to spend on this car. Has been meaning to do this for a while now (so far I have the brake boot, shifter boot, gauge cover, and arm rest covered in alcantara, just need to do the rest. For the time being I settled for wrapping the center "swoosh" trip in 1080 CF, but I definitely want to do alcantara/microsuede eventually. Idea is to turn an econobox with a turbo stuck on into a luxury hatch.
