Default 99 Outback Fog/Driving Lamps

Just bought this car. The glass lens of one of the fog lamps is cracked. Is the lens replaceable or do I have to get the whole unit? Where to buy? Thanks in advance.
Deadeye.

Go look up scoobymods, and browse that site for instructions for removal (and upgrade) of those lights.

Hey Deadeye, I had the lenses on my fog lights replaced by a guy here in Calgary. He manufactures the lenses on a computer lathe and glues the new lens to the foglamp assembly. So far no leaks!

Replacement fog lights are very expensive as are the upgrades to a Hella or whatever. Non replacement lights may also need fabrication to get them to fit properly. This dude charged me $25 CDN for each light! That and the new lenses are made of impact resistant plastic. I highly recommend this option!

I believe he has a website called autolens.com or something like that, try a search in the Legacy forum, I think that it was two or three months ago.

Good Luck!

Hella 500 Amber fogs.....
All it took was an aluminum L-bracket.

They were $60 for the pair, if it helps....

Your OB looks great! I'd love more detail on the light swap.

Any major challenges during the install?
How does the light compare?
How did you wire up the switching (stock Fog switch or different)?

Thanks!

FWIW:

I have a '97 OB w/ stock fogs. And an '03 TS w/ Hella 500 fogs (but they're not amber, they're clear). The Hellas are noticeably better. Wider pattern, sharper cutoff, and brighter.

If one of my fogs went in the OB, I'd get Hellas to replace them. The 500's for the TS were about $70 for the pair. I just used the stock wiring, but mounting in the OB would be different so I can't help much there.

Nice clean OB, sybir! Mine looks a bit more... used, LOL.

I just installed Hella FF75 fogs and Hella 500 drivings last weekend. For the FF75's there are already holes in the bumper, so you just bolt them right on! Easy as hell. For the 500's I just made use of the 2 holes at the bottom of each stock foglight location and made an aluminum plate with 3 holes each... 2 for mounting the plate to the holes, and 1 for the bolt from the 500's.

Lighting output difference is literally like night and day.

That looks pretty slick, I may have to pick up some 75 driving patterns for the center intake area.

My install was really easy after I pulled the headlights out as I could then maneuver around, get a ratchet down in there, etc.

I did an L bracket, as I wasn't satisfied the stock inserts (just big semi-threaded grub screws) would hold a heavier aftermarket lightm, and I couldn't find new bolts to fit the inserts when one bolt stripped. My L bracket mounts on top of the bumper ledge inside the bumper with 2 bolts, then drops down vertically, so the 500 sits perfectly centered, and I can still aim it from the back of the bumper with the headlight out (or just tweak the aluminum bracket till it lines up

As for wiring, I used one of the stock fog wires to send signal to the included Hella relay, as I don't like running powerful lights through stock wiring (a bad thing on Subarus especially).
So my stock switch still lights up, and my fogs turn off with the high beams. I haven't gotten into finding the OEM fog relay to ground it separately, but if I get driving lights, I won't need extra light with the highs on anyways

Best thing is that with as far forward as my fogs are mounted (almost flush with the trailing edge of the opening) I get excellent corner coverage, to the point where I have probably ~170 degrees of illumination around the front, and the amber light is a godsend in fog, as well as letting everyone I know that the vehicle coming up on them at a high rate of speed is me

But any big aftermarket fog will do that, I may try clear lenses when I break one of these, but at $25 a pop, that's pretty painless

Cool deal... I wired my fogs to always come on with the lows (and off with the highs) and the drivings to only come on with the highs.

Seeing a picture of your OB again really makes me look forward to mounting my anthracite '98 RS rims onto ours next summer.

Have any pics with the 98's?
I just picked up some WRX rims/tires for winter (that's irony ) since I have 225 Kumho 712's on there now, but I'm thinking about powdercoating my 99's anthracite, or maybe even flat black. I'll do anything to stop the brake dusting problem

I got an email requesting more info on my brackets, so if anyone else wants it, I'll post it below.

Cliff notes: L bracket, 2 slots on the horizontal to align it and hold it, and a big hole on the vertical for the bolt on the Hella moutnig bracket. The biggest change, and IMO what makes them fit so well, is that I mounted them upside down.

Remove the headlights, grille, and stock foglights. Look down from the top to where the foglight recess is, and you'll see the gray plastic shelf that extends back about 3" from the bumper face. It's a continuation of the gray protrusion on the front of the car, if that makes sense.

All I did was take a ~3.5 inch piece of 3/16 aluminum flat stock (about an inch wide) and drill/countersink 2 small holes on one side, and a big (1/2 inch maybe) hole on the other leg of it. The arm with 2 holes sits on top of that gray plastic shelf, and the end with the big hole hangs down (you should be able to see it from the front of the bumper). I kinda put in an undrilled bracket and moved it around till it looked right, so just experiment. This is the only time you'll be able to change how deep the lights mont, unles you make slots on the top instead of holes.

The Hellas have a pivoting mounting bolt on the bottom of the light case; it can either stick straight up, or out the back at a 90 degree angle (or anywhere in between.) I flipped the lights upside down, so the bolt was at the top, and put it through the big hole in the bracket I made. Tighten it down a bit, and the light should fit pretty snug in the hole (read: wouldn't move much even if it wasn't bolted in .

The nice part about the aluminum bracket is that once you have it tightened down all the way, it's ductile enough that you can tweak it to fine-tune the lights (you'll still want to do the major aiming using the Hella bracket, but because you can fit a ratchet over the bolt going in through where the headlight is, it's easy to do.)

Snug everything up, and you should be in business; let me know if you need more help or anyhting

No pix yet with the gray 98's because they still have corded V700's on them. A set of summer tires of some sort is a few weeks away, but that will probably mean that by then, my snow tires will be going on the stock wheels.

I can take a pic of the gray 98's propped up next to the car when the weather clears up though.
