Thumbs up Brullen Headers

When my RS was still stock it felt like I was always towing some heavy invisible cargo when I want to accelerate hard from 80-120km/h even if its just only me in the car. For stock low end power it was adequate and responsive, but when climbing hills its not very fun at all.

After I got just the CAI the car loves to pull to redline after 3500RPM but low end power was still an issue. The response starting from a cruising 80km/h to flooring it to 120km/h was quicker but still felt there was a bottleneck choking the airflow.

Finally got the headers & catback installed both at the same time. First noticeable difference; IT IS LOUD AND DEEP! It sounds agressive just like an SVT Cobra, and got the low rumble at idle. Incredible power is felt throughout the whole RPM band, pushing the accelerator a little can easily jump to 4000RPM so now I can down-shift with much more ease.
Going from 0-100km/h is fast! and from 80-120km/h I don't need to down-shift to 3rd and I can still pull strong with 4th all the way! The combination of the headers, hi-flow cat, and Tanabe RM cat-back is good money spent for the power.
The whole setup is quite loud, but at cruising its quiet like stock. Only when accelerating or WOT that there is a loud deep tone. No need to worry about cops cuz the sound isn't intrusive or get too much attention unless you rev at him.

An added spice to this is the popping I get when accelerating after I let off the gas. At first I was kinda worried, but this is normal everyone says. My friend who drives an FC said its hard to get those popping noise for cars with piston engines, which he always say that is exclusive to rotary engines. All this just makes the whole setup more agressive and intimidating! HaAaAW!

I'm very statisfied with the new-found power. Though only minor problem is the bright CE light that is flashing in my eyes now. Its no biggie, the guys at Brullen are gonna fix that for me next week since they promised no CE light. I like how some people nowadays still keep their words true; the people at Brullen are excellent!

Nixx,

I am with you 100%. Like you I have the minor annoyance of the
CEL, but that is soon to be fixed. The guys at Brullen and Joe
have been top notch all the way.

I don't regret for a second buying this.

Thumbs up AT review...

My car is the first automatic RS with the Brullen headers, and my impression for the headers is very impressive.

First, my car is early MY00. There is NO CE light problems related to the headers since installed by Brullen (almost 5,300km/ 3 months & counting), I don't think I'll need the O2 relocation fix.

Second, I don't feel any low-end loss with the headers. Even if there was some loss, it's well below 2000rpm & it's not noticeable even for the AT. Note the headers will pull from 2500rpm & up.

City:
During lazy city cruising, my rpm stay under 2000rpm but with one light touch on the gas, the rpm jump to 2500rpm. When passing, usually I let the AT shifts itself around 3500~4000rpm & that's quite enough. The increase in torque & power is noticeable, as I don't need to floor the pedal and there is no need to rev high. I do need to keep more distance between the car in front & press my gas pedal with care.

The side affect after 3 months is -> my ECU learns my new "non aggressive" driving style , so it shifts smoothly around 3500~4000rpm constantly except for stop sign launch & highway condition… which make it harder if I want to rev to red line all of a sudden without manual shifting. Still, I don't have any tuning done on ECU or A/F ratio and this will be addressed latter this year.

Highway:
During highway... my car pulls strong & no problem keep accelerating from 120km~160km. I don't recommend exceeding speed limit but now my highway passing speed is well around 130km ~150km.

I would highly recommend Brullen headers/exhaust system even for people with automatic!
(Setup: Brullen header/catback, Cobb street cams, PRM intake, UR Pulley & Toyo Garit HT)

Being in the automotive industry, I have been to several shops that specialize in audomotive exhaust systems.

The Brullen headers are pretty much artwork, as far as I am concerned. The design is well thought out, and has been research, not just 'winged' like some lesser known products.

I'm really happy with these headers as well... I've had mine on for about 2 months now and they're fantastic The one thing I noticed right away with the headers is how strongly the engine pulls and maybe even an increase in torque. I was driving home in stop and go traffic on the 401 outside Toronto and I wasn't down shifting nearly as much when traffic slowed. The car pulled really hard in 4th and 5th gears when the revs were low.

Unfortunately I have an '02 so I definately have the picky ECU. I got a CEL after about 700km of highway driving. I know Brullen was putting a lot of time into solving the CEL issue so I wasn't too concerned when the light popped up. I should be going in for the 02 fix in the next week or so...

I've had my G-tech ever since I got my car and have been testing my mods everytime I get something new. Before the headers were installed my car had only a PRM intake and did 0-60 in a best time of 7.8, after the header and cat back were installed my 0-60 dropped to 7.1. This best time of 7.1 was taken the day after the headers were installed so the ECU was still learning...

I really have a respect for Brullen after following this product through development and finally into production. They kept us all informed every step of the way and were upfront and honest the whole time. As soon as a problem crept up they went to work on a fix and it looks like they have one. The bottom line is that this is a great product backed by a great company.

Thumbs up

I think I was one of the first to receive a complete Brullen Header-back system.

I have had this system since the end of last November 2001. To date I did get a few CE lights, but Brullen has fixed the problem with an electrical fix to the rear O2 sensor. There was also a re-location of the front sensor closer to the high flow cat.

I have worked closely with Brullen and Joe T. regarding this new system and have driven approx. 15000km since the initial install. Since the CE light fix, I have had no further problems and the car does feel like it has more power/torque. My fuel economy has also increased...nearly 100 additional km per tank.

After my first CE light I was a little disappointed, by since I was #2 or #3 to receive the header system, I realized this was a new frontier and my "picky" 2001 RS was the most sensitive model for O2 sensor as far as error codes are concerned. Now the car works fantastic, and I have driven at least 3500km with no CE lights.

The sound from this system is simply awsome. I get many interested looks when I drive by and down shift. Top speed that I have taken this beast to is approx. 200kph with much less effort required. The pull from low RPM's is also greatly improved.

Brullen has always been available to help me when I needed help, and I have nothing but respect for this company. Richard (owner of Brullen) is a great guy who was even willing to work on my car over many late (10pm) evenings, when many other manufacturer would have closed shop at 5pm.

For the performance, quality and great customer service, I highly recommend any Brullen system.

For the record, the main performance mods on my car are:
-Brullen header-back exhaust system
-Ganzflow intake (enlarged 3" to air-box)
-Clutchmasters stage 3 clutch
-Unorthadox light weight flywheel

Best regards,
Pete.

Default Brullen top-notch!

What a difference! Brullen headers made the boxer-engine sound much sweeter. It really made a noticeable rumble sound. The car pulls much quicker and less "lag" or hesitation.
My set-up includes Brullen headers with high-flow cat(Brullen), Brullen cat-back, and Ganz-Flow intake.
Worth the money to buy the Brullen headers!

Default Get 'em

I had the whole package done; header, hi-flow cat, midpipe and cat-back.

First impression, first gear is very smooth, no jerking. Second impression, it pulls and pulls and pulls. Actually, it was kinda of embarrassing, to hit the fuel cutoff (several times) @ 6200RPM. Nomally, you can tell when you are 'out of gear', but because it now pulls all the way to redline, you can't tell (for the first few days anyway).

I would strongly recommend this to anyone. And I haven't even mentioned the awesome sound it makes.

Also, how much would the headers and cat-back cost including labour?
Thanks.

You will mostlikely get CEL if you're a 2000RS or 2001RS.
If '98 or '99 you'll be fine.

Mine is a 2001RS.
But I've taken the extra step to ceramic coat the headers and have the ECU tuned by Yoshio. I think the car now recognizes my headers & exhaust as a "stock" part so no CEL. Tuning is recommended, you'll even notice a difference in sound once your setup is tuned not to mention the much smoother power that comes with it.

Hey Nixx,
What exactly did they do when they tuned it? Has anyone else had their ECU tuned after getting the Brullen Combo?

I have, but it was also after a set of cams (from Yoshio) as well.
It probably isn't a fair comparison, since you can't tell what came
from the cams vs. the tune.

Yoshio basically adjusts the A/F ratio according to the power mods to your car. No more power peaks now... only smooth refined power and better gas milage too!!
