And here is the AeroBlade Edge with the Ascent 1600... Measures 71" long and 31" wide if I remember. It can go back a couple more inches back without hitting the hatch once I get a shorty antenna. I also need to shift the rails forward more so there is not as much distance between the front edge and the first rail...

Thats why we ended up getting the carrier was for when we go camping. Biggest reason for going with the cargo box is weather proofing at the scarfice of being height constrained.

Thought I'd share my rack install. I haven't seen very many with the aero style bars yet. I'm running Thule 450R "crossroads" feet, their aeroblade 53" bars, their Echelon bike trays and their 48" fairing. The fairing does not fit the aeroblade bars (Thule says it's not necessary), so I had to retro fit it myself, I found that it decreased wind noise considerably!

I'm tempted to purchase one (if I ever get off my lazy butt and buy a bicycle ), but wanted to see if anyone had tried them with the 12+ Impreza sedan. I'm curious about fitment, concerns with surface damage of the trunk (scuffs, scratches, etc.), bike stability during transport, and security (esp. if it's relatively easy to have a bike or the rack stolen).

Example: (Disclaimer) I have no affiliation with Thule or Rack Attack
I'm guessing that nobody has tried these types of racks then? I was kind of hoping that these would be a viable option for transporting bicycles, given that I'm really not a big fan of using roof racks.

I havent used them, but if I were to go that route I'd probably target something that used a trailer hitch. Seems like too much risk of scratching/rubbing for something thats mounted to the trunk.

Glad I'm not the only one. I guess I have to take a visit to the dealer also to have them look at it What a pain.

That's a good point, though I guess the same kind of risk (denting/scratching) remains regardless of method used, and I'm sure there are ways to mitigate the contact-point scratching and rubbing.

The 2.0i manual does not advise using a trailer assembly for towing (except for the Crosstrek). That would've been a preferred option for me as well.

If you use a trailer hitch for mounting a bike rack, then you're not really "towing", right?

I don't carry bikes with my Impreza, but I do have a receiver hitch on my wife's Honda Odyssey, and we use a Thule hitch-mounted bike rack on her car with great success. There's no way the bikes can come in contact with the car.

In fact, we went with the version of the rack that swings out to the side so that you can open her hatch with the bikes installed on the rack, which is a GREAT feature.

I guess not. We'll see - I'm going to wait until I get confirmation from someone that mounting a bike rack on a trailer hitch won't result in denial of warranty service. In the meantime, I'll just keep procrastinating getting a bike...

In my experiance the trunk mounted racks are a total pain in the butt. Too many straps and too much pressure on the rear door or trunk, and usualy things like badging take some abuse, not to mention that you lose access to the rear hatch.

I took delivery of my '13 impreza last night and already have a hitch mounted bike rack from my xterra. I am about to pull the trigger on a hitch but warranty issuse scare me. I feel if the wiring harness isnt installed you might be able to prove that you are not towing anything

I'm looking to order a set of bars and bike carrier for my 2012 5-dr sport premium. I've been transporting my MTB for a while now by putting the seats down (I have the rear mat and seat back protector) and just loading it in the hatch. I've actually fit 2 bikes in it this way. However, my interior is starting to get a bit too scruffed up for my liking.

After reading through a chunk of this thread I've realized..wow, there is a lot of options. I see a lot of people going with Thule but not much OEM stuff. Would the two oem parts below be all I need to order?

I'm thinking going oem too, it actually looks cheaper from what I've seen in my brief amount of searching. But I haven't searched too hard yet

One note on the OEM bars. To me, they are the ones that look the best, but If I had to do it again, I'll go with the Yakima Whispbar or the Thule AeroBlade Edge bars. They are twice the price, but they have many advantages over the OEM Like, you being able to lock them and having more space to mount accessories.

There's something scary about being able to get these bars off with just a screw driver. I know in the end if somebody wants something, he/she is going to get it but the lack of any lock or theft prevention is unnerving. It also depends of where you live/park often I guess.

Also, with the OEM bars, the amount of cargo is hindered by the parts that clamps to the roof rail. They are big chunky and are not straight. If you need to mount more than one thing on your roof other than a bike tray, I'll recommend going with the square or round bars as you are gonna have more real state to work with.

Just a thought.

Thanks for the info. I hadn't given the locking mechanism much thought. I'm generally in "safe" areas, but I suppose if I parked my car and went on a 2-3 hour ride, that'd be plenty of time for someone to yank the bars.

So the OEM bike mount then has no security for locking the bike down either? That's a deal breaker then because theres no way I'm leaving my bike on my roof if I want to stop at a store or restaurant while I have it with me.

Perhaps I need to search the thread better for pics of the oem mounting

I am only wanting to carry 2-3 bikes (3rd bike being small enough to easily fit in the hatch as it is a toddler bike)

It looks like you can lock the bike rails, just not the rails to the car? Pretty noticeable if someone is stealing the entire rack assembly

I was looking at the Rockymount tierod rack after digging back through this thread some more, but then I found this http://www.autoanything.com/bike-rac...-iii-bike-rack

It's at a pretty good price right now, anyone have any experience with it?

I have the 38" on my 2013 sport, pictured a few comments up, there is a close up and you can kind of see the overall spacing.
