Between a 2011 wrx and a 2011 5.0 mustang...need help deciding. 2.5 warranty issues?
I know...two totally different cars and it sounds like an odd comparison but its what im looking into. I have always loved v8's because of the sound and raw torque/hp they can put out with easy mods (especially the new 5.0) but gas mileage and rwd is not so hot for N IL winters.
I currently drive a focus SVT and am for sure a die hard hatch back kind of guy but I am ready for a new car (plus with mods I put down about 145whp, lol). I am between a base 2011 wrx hatch and a stripper 2011 mustang gt (about 25k vs 29k). Pros of the wrx: AWD...would buy a set of blizzaks for the winter which would be pretty much unstoppable Hatch... Great use of space, a body style I love and 4 doors for others slightly better MPG than the mustang but not by a whole lot Cons of the wrx: Warranty...I know dealerships are all different but I really worry about doing any mods to a turbo car because of the warranty issues. I would really like to see close to 300whp out of the car but I know that requires mods that most dealerships would laugh at for turbo/motor warranty work Pros of the mustang: V8...raw torque off idle Good as a track car (not that I would spend much time there...would probably end up doing auto X or track days with wrx and 1/4 with the mustang) Easy bolt on mods to get about 400whp pretty reliably Cons of the mustang 2 seater as far as im concerned (im 6'2 so no way that seat is going up for a passenger) Fuel economy slightly worse, especially when getting in it Would have to keep my s10 4x4 for the winter as there is no way I would drive a mustang in the snow without 300 lbs in the trunk and snow tires (seems dumb) so would lose out on the 4k the s10 is worth plus have to pay insurance on two vehicles which would suck. I think insurance on the two would be similar, wrx being slightly cheaper since I am not looking at the sti (I am 24 soon to be 25 so over the "underage" hump, single and a home owner so should be good for multi policy discounts). I know im on a wrx forum but was hoping maybe someone in here is or used to be a muscle car person? How about warranty experiences from people with down pipes and aftermarket TMIC or FMIC? Any input is appreciated! Thanks Mike

mustangs are boats and handle just like them. the wrx is a more versitle car as a daily driver if that is its use.

I've owned 3 mustangs... 2 being 5.0's and 1 was supercharged.... Doesn't come close to how much I enjoy my 2010 wrx. You will get so much more out of a wrx than a mustang... trust me. Just my 2 cents.

If I didn't live in an area that got snow, the Mustang would be my choice. I've done the RWD + Northeast winter thing and it wasn't fun. RWD cars are capable of getting around in snow with snow tires, but I have a very steep driveway and just didn't want to deal with the hassle of getting to work everyday with a RWD car in snow.

I sold my '02 WS6 Trans Am to buy my '11 WRX. They are different to say the least. Muscle V8s and turbo 4s feel completely different. Drive both and then make your decision. Personally, I needed one car I could drive all year. Decision was easy for me. If I wasn't in that position, I would have kept my Trans Am. Good luck. |

Thanks for the advice thus far.
The mustang would for sure cost me more in every way... Insurance Gas Cost of a second vehicle + its gas + its insurance I have driven both a 2010 wrx and the '11 GT and both are fantastic cars. The main thing that concerns me with the wrx is modability (why I put this in this forum). What mods are we talking to reliably get 300whp out of the wrx? And how often are these mods dealership friendly? I dont have a problem taking aftermarket parts off for dealership trips but taking a day to uninstall aftermarket and reinstall OEM would not be much fun (up pipes/ down pipes?) I am really a warranty person as I have come into quite a few moderate costing repairs I had done on the svt while it was still under warranty so I would hate to lose that. |

2011 mustang ain't no joke, especially with the roush upgrades and still being covered under warranty.

As a former GT mustang owner (91 5.0 with bolt ons) and a current WRX hatch owner, here are my thoughts:
1) If you can afford to buy a ****ty winter car, get the mustang and rock it all year when the roads aren't salted. 2) If this is going to be your ONLY car, I feel the WRX has the advantage. You will feel crippled in the mustang in the winter, even with snow tires. Trust me when I say that V8 torque + IL winters = Miserable experience until the roads clear. Both are excellent choices though, and I'm sure both will put a huge smile on your face. EDIT: For the WRX, the first stage would be to install a catless DP and get a Protune. That should get you quite a big bump, and while you are enjoying that you can plan your next batch of mods. I will say though, that this will absolutely cause any dealer to deny any engine/turbo related warranty claim for sure. |

The whole warranty thing freaks me out....
What kind of power are these cars putting down with a catless DP and a tune? 280ish? How about with just a tune? |

There is an official 2011 dyno thread, also look in the "Proven Power Bragging" section and you will find documented dyno runs for various mods.

Here is a good thread for you...
2010 WRX owner just picked up an '11 GT and ran 114mph trap speed stock No cracked ringlands and busted trannies there... http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...1888473&page=4 Intake, tune, headers and cat deletes I'm sure are giving them close to 120mph trap speeds.
