Default New Ford Focus ST headed for Paris *Merged*

Quote:
As the launch of the 2012 Focus draws closer, Ford plans to roll out several variants of its C-segment people mover. And at this year's Paris Motor Show, the Blue Oval will reportedly kick off the party with the debut of a new Focus ST which could finally make its way to America next year. The Focus ST is expected to be propelled by an uprated version of the 2.0-liter Ecoboost inline-four – the same mill fitted to the Euro-market Mondeo – but with output boosted well over the current 200 horsepower.

In ST trim the engine should produce about 250 hp and close to 260 pound-feet of torque, with all that twist coming in low in the rev range to balance high-revving fun with enhanced around-town driveability. The ST should hit 60 mph in under six seconds with combined mileage of about 29 miles per gallon (U.S.). Earlier this year, Ford acknowledged that it was developing a "global" performance version of the new Focus, but never said explicitly that it would be offered in North America. Here's hoping that changes in Paris this September.
Ford better bring it over...

Thank God Ford had the common sense to increase the performance in both engines inside the mustang. Now they don't have to fear that a lowly FOCUS ST will encroach on their sacred Mustang. Bring it ford. You need something to fill the gap below the 305 hp V6 mustang.

If Ford brought this to the US tomorrow, none of you would buy it because you'd all be saying, "I'm waiting for the RS."

Wrong.

The 2.5L turbocharged inline five-cylinder engine generates 300hp (224kW) at 6,500rpm and 325lb-ft of torque (440Nm)between 2,300 and 4,500rpm. Acceleration from a stop to 100km/h (62mph) takes just 5.9 seconds and the car carries on to a top speed of 263km/h (164mph). Pricing in Europe will reportedly be set at €39,000 ($51,644). Despite the rapid performance, it's fairly efficient, rated at 33.6mpg US (7.0L/100km) extra-urban and 17.5mpg (13.4L/100km) in town for a combined average of 25mpg (9.4L/100km), which translates to an average CO2 emissions of 225g/km. Both are due in part to the relatively low 3,227lb (1,467kg) curb weight.

Based on the same core as the Focus ST, the RS adds power, handling and appearance modifications to improve the car’s ability to put its power to the ground and direct it down the road, track or gravel path. To keep the potent engine from creating unmanageable torque steer, the engineers designed the car with a unique suspension called the ‘RevoKnuckle,’ which enables the car to keep the intended direction of travel even under heavy throttle. This works in conjunction with a Quaife automatic torque biasing limited-slip differential. Combined, the Focus RS obviates the need for AWD and the attendant weight gains of the extra differential and driveshafts.

“Front-wheel-drive was our preference all along. All-wheel-drive systems add cost, weight, inertia and consequently, fuel consumption. Compensating for the significant weight of an all-wheel-drive system requires dynamic compromises we preferred not to make," said Team RS Chief Engineer, Dirk Densing. "If you can achieve the performance you want without steering disturbance, then front-wheel-drive is a better performance car – lighter and with a more precise, linear steering response than AWD. With the work of our advanced research team in Aachen, we were able to achieve this and deliver something genuinely different.”

Incorrect, I would buy 2 in 5 door to replace both our cars.

What you meant to say is, if the RS comes here, everyone will bitch about how expensive it is, say it's touching BMW 3-Series territory, then go buy a used STi for $25,000 and still dump $10,000 into it.

Nope. I think anything north of 250hp is too much for FWD.

If the car has 230-250hp and is well balanced I'll take the ST.

Color me excited...though if they bring this to the US, I wonder if we'd still get a Fiesta ST as well.

No, I learned from driving '91 and '99 Miata that power isn't everything. I like this car the way is it now.

I so pray that SVT installs the REVO knuckles on the base model. From what i understand they completely change the game on FWD high HP cars.
