Default Finally got my ej207, here is my build thread!

Well, after 2 months of waiting to get my ej207 from DS1 I finally got it yesterday.

Here are some pictures from right when I opened the box.

There is Styrofoam all over everything in the motor. I cleaned it up and now it looks pretty good. The motor has pretty bad rod knock but I'm just using it for the block. Here are some pictures of it out.

Next step is to split the block and pull everything out. I'm going to sell anything in good enough shape to be reused and scrap the rest. The future plans for this motor are a really nice 2.5 crank, slightly longer rods, and some forged and coated JE pistons. Also going to use some EJ205 heads with 1mm over valves, cams, and some porting. Maxwell Propulsion is doing the build and has done all of the design so far. Sounds very promising! Then a rotated 35r kit. All of that is going in this long with my whole 2007 STI driveline with Brembos and the works.

That is going to be sweet! I love white Imprezas. Sounds like a nice little build. How much did you pay for the 207 block?

Hey bud, don't sweat pulling it apart or cleaning it any more.
We'll take care of all that for you and give you your extra parts.

I'm really looking forward to getting your build going. When are you bringing the heads by? Do I need to source some for you? I have a set here that just need a few parts.

We're going to have a killer pair of white RS's!!

don't sweat the studs, we have a bunch of those here too.

I'll be keeping a close eye on this one. Want the same setup in my wagon someday!

The ej207 I got for $500. Good deal I think except that it took so damn long. Hopefully some of it might even still be usable?

There is another guy on here selling an EJ207 crank and block for $550. I almost bought it because i was going to do the same build you are, but changed my mind at the last second.

I've decided to just build the 257 block I have and get custom pistons to do the "hybrid" build right. I ended up just wanting more low end grunt since this is a street car and I won't ever rev it past 7k.

I'm probably going to have Maxwell Propulsions build it as a well, or at least buy the pistons from them and have them machine the block using torque plates and then assemble it myself.

So if anybody wants a 207 block, just seach in the "Engine Power Exhaust" section. I think it was "Midnight 2.5 RS" that was selling it.

Good luck with your build! I can't wait to hear your driving impression vs. a standard EJ20.

So I finally got the block up to Maxwell Power and it looks like the block might not be any good. I've talked to DS1 and they're willing to pay me some money back. Sucks because Dominic already had some pistons delivered but now it looks like we either have to over bore a bit or it might even need sleeves. If it needs sleeves I don't know what I'll do yet. Here are some pictures of the damage once the block was split.

man i been waiting on this build forever suck that it might take a while to happen. how much would it have to be bored over? .020?.040? anymore after that and i would start to shy away, and personaly if you going to sleeve it, might as well get your money back and use your blow 205

Yeah not more than .020 over. If it takes more than that I'll either sleeve it or go with a brand new ej205. Maxwell Power is going to talk to Darton to see what it would cost for them to sleeve this block.

Good luck! I had to go 0.020 over on my EJ207. Just got the block back, can't wait to try it!

Cool, I'm hoping it works out okay. .020 over is only .25 mm off each side. I'm told that gouge might be a bit deeper than .010 so not sure if it will be machinable or not. I'm hoping so but we'll see.

not true.

every bit you remove from the cylinder walls lowers the power handling capacity of the engine. Subarus are very sensitive to this. The 2.5L is the most sensitive while the 2.0L is the least. Other engines out there aren't near as sensitive.

Youch. Is that cylinder rusting?

Anyways, looks like you guys used muratic acid to try and get rid of the rust. I'd actually try to use a little rustmort or evaporust if you can get it, the results on rusty stuff is truly amazing. From the pics, you do look like you need a bore, but you might get lucky. Try a hone first, its cheap and your shop can do it. Worse it can do is that you still need a bore.

I thought it was explained pretty well - the more you remove from the cylinder walls the less strength they have, which can limit power (reduced thickness increases the likelyhood of the cylinder walls cracking).

Saying that, I don't know exactly how much you'd limit power by honing the walls or going a minimal rebore.

But as mentioned earlier, I wouldn't bother with a basic rebore anyhoo - fit some AEBS sleeves and at least the bores wont be the limiting factor of your build

this is the type of failure that commonly occurs with overbored Subaru engines. usually it's the 2.5 like in this picture.

Dominic at Maxwell Power called me yesterday and it looks like going .020" over will do the trick. I'm still out $350 for machine work and Dominic has to order me another set of pistons but I'm hoping DS1 will cover that. They said they would. I'm basically out close to a grand for what I thought I was paying $500 for.

actually yes i did lol
and its in really good shape, block has no probs, and one cylinder head is perfect, one piston is bad, but its a v8 so i will put forged pistons in anyways. also there really isnt much damage to the cylinder head most can be cleaned up, but i think two little spots will have to be filled, but hey its a Ver8 JDM 207 long block for the next to nothing price i paid, if cyclops wants i will post some pictures
