The Outback forum guys basically ignore me now because I have had so many issues with my car and asked so many questions.

But I got a p0420 code thrown up today and I am not sure why. Now 3 weeks ago I had a p0171 and 3 weird VDC C codes come up but after a through inspection nothing seemed wrong so I cleared them. Drove about 700 miles on a trip and everything was great got great gas mileage and everything. Today on my way home from work I got the CEL T/C and flashing cruise. So I did the scan pulled up the p0420. Now I have had a light suspicion the battery in my car is old and on its way out along with being the total wrong battery for my car. But the dealership it came from seemed to like doing that kind of thing at least their mechanics had no clue what they were doing they just kind of threw stuff on there. The car is fairly new to me (3 months) and prior to me it was a 2 owner car with every single record for it down to headlight bulb replacement since it was new in 2005 so I know its been maintained very well. Apart from the shoddy Brakes, ball joints, battery and mismatched tires that the dealership that I bought it from installed that is.

Now maybe its just me hoping its just the battery and not a Cat/02/other sensor that the p0420 can also mean. But call me crazy I'm thinking maybe these issues are related to voltage since that battery is a type 26 when it should be a 35. What do you guys think? Possible battery problem? Or should I bite the bullet and start getting the Cat/02's/MAF Vacuum leaks looked at and or replaced? I am currently in Canada and won't be back to GH until the 24th so this kind of sucks that its happening to me while I'm far from home and my tools.
Something to keep in mind is that the 0420 doesn't specially pertain to a single part, but simply that your o2 is saying that it's not as clean as it should be.

This is for numerous possibilities, like: dirty MAF, broken vacuum lines, catalytic converter failing, bad plugs, low quality fuel, EGR valve, bad air filter, etc

It's very hard to track down a 420 code. You can start throwing money at it to get rid of the check engine light, orrr do what the rest of us do with an older Subaru: let the light be since it doesn't effect fuel economy or performance. Just scan the car like once a month to make sure more don't turn on and drove the car carefree.

I checked the MAF this morning as I used to have to clean it off on my Land Rover a ton, and one side was pretty grungy so I sprayed it with CRC cleaner and put it back in, disconnected the battery to reset the ecu as recommended by a legacy guy, and drove it to work. So far so good no more codes or lights in 20 miles. Hoping this holds until I can get back to GH. I do a lot of highway driving so I kind of like cruise control for that haha so part of me wants to figure it out.

I always run 91, and 94 when its avail at certain stations in Ontario so I don't think its the fuel quality but who knows. While I was at my MAF I checked the filter and it looked pretty decent, whats your thoughts on K&N? or any other suggestions for air filters? Also how hard is it to change plugs on an H6, I have heard its a pain maybe its time I give those a change as I'm coming up to 120k miles.

Just stick with a paper filter, the K&N ones will crud up your MAF if you oil them too much, and the only reason they flow more is because they filter less. so more sand and crap will make it into your motor.

Ive never done h6 plugs but i imagine its just as annoying as h4 plugs, you can do it in a few hours in a garage with basic sockets and a swivel. Its worht changing if they have never been changed in 120k

Something else to keep in mind Tristan, octane rating is NOT related to fuel quality, it's simply the resistance to pre-ignition (or knock as it's more commonly referred to).

In fact, if your vehicle is designed for 87 and you're running a higher octane fuel you're not doing yourself or your car any favors. The higher the octane, the harder it is to ignite, so you may be getting an incomplete burn. It would likely also be harder to get it to start up since it would need a little extra heat to kick off the first ignition.

As to air filters, I agree with Eric. Just run an OE type replacement from a reputable company. I like WIX, but whatever you like is fine, too.

Unfortunately like the Turbo XT's the 3.0r takes premium fuel only, I wish it wasn't that way. I never knew that about fuel to be honest haha can you tell I'm a little new into the tuning world.

I never really got to do any of the fun stuff growing up. Driving a Land Rover was just slow and steady and expensive to fix when it wasn't steady. So I appreciate all of the help from everyone! I will stick with a stock air filter, I have always heard mixed things about the K&N's.

So far so good with the clean MAF.

Today I got so bored at work I went through all 74 pages of service records for the car dating back to 2005 when brand new, and typed them out in a word doc in chronological order and mileage in/out (this car has been treated well thats for sure) so I no longer have to keep that stack of papers in my glove box. I have never had an empty glove box before this is exciting.

In Canada they seem to have quite a rigorous dealer maintenance schedule. Way better than the one our 2010 XT has been getting from the dealer in Michigan thats for sure. Also every 10k miles at Subaru dealers in Canada they fully TerraClean them.

In Ontario all cars/trucks 1985 and up must have a full two part inspection by the government every 24 months(or when you change ownership), ranging from tire wear to lightbulbs and wipers, to cracked hoses and bushings, and don't even think about having a stone chip let alone a crack in your windshield they also scan it to make sure there aren't stored codes. If it doesn't pass the first inspection you must replace all parts in order to qualify for the second stage of inspection which is emissions testing. Its pretty crazy up here thats for sure. Maybe even worse than California. Cars up here aren't allowed to go to **it legally haha

Travis I need some suggestions on rim colors, I seem to be struggling to find a color that would look okay on a gold Outback. Other than the obvious black of course.

Its the "Champagne Opal Gold Metallic" Heres the color of mine, I am leaning towards black rims. I was considering getting some more stickers and maybe matching the rims to that? Down the road I want to get it tinted also. I miss my limo tint that I had on my Landy.

Not sure why the picture won't load as a preview on here.

Yeah I think that the black would fit pretty well on that.

Been putting it off for a couple of weeks, but I need to do a trans drain/flush ASAP on my 5EAT. I am going to pick up 13 Quarts of the SUBARU HP-ATF tomorrow in Canada at $8.34/Qt before I head off on my trip to CMU Thursday then I'll be GH bound Sunday.

I looked at the filter and it seems fine with visible no damage. I have been reading and studying a lot on how to do this and following the info found on the "DIY 5EAT ATF Flush" thread on the LGT forum. Looks pretty simple.

Would anyone be down to help or supervise this next week or weekend? I have never done this before so I figured if anyone had experience and was free that would be great.

I could come to you, or if you came to me on a Tuesday, it is $1 Taco Tuesday at Arturos in GH and they have the best Tacos in town and I'd buy. Or I would buy tacos any other day if you came. Figured that would sweeten the deal haha I figure its cheaper to buy the fluid and tacos than pay the $250 for a flush
