I would rather have some rattles than a car that needs repairs and has actual problems consistently and across the brand. Just sayin.

also, on a side note, how are the BRZ clutches? I think I am getting knee issues from the constant use of my knees with shifting and lifting. I might have to move to an automatic tranny.

To celery- I've driven a friends gti stock and stage 2. They are fun little cars no doubt. Although they're not as quick as ours, you feel the same amount of adrenaline when boost kicks in. And city driving is way more fun at low speed with its quick and wicked steering feel/handling. If I wasn't such a subie fan and had test driven the gti first I might be on vwvortex rather than nasioc. |

Its interesting how you go from one forum to the next and each forum is so sure that their car is the better one. GTI owners are very down on WRX's apparently. Its almost like religious fanatics the way everyone is so sure of themselves..lol they are fairly firm..maybe you should get something with a DSG..wonder where you might be able to find a company that offers those..lol |

What are you talking about, Cel? The BRZ clutch is light. It felt almost exactly like my 2005 STI clutch. They purposely made the clutch light in the BRZ because they expected constant use for racing and such. Purpose-built. They didn't want people getting worn out. If the BRZ clutch was like the WRX clutch it wouldn't see nearly as many accolades.
I almost thought the clutch was too light when I drove one, but in retrospect it was fine. |

I think my WRX clutch is way too soft. I've driven my friends 06 sti a couple times and I'm wicked jelly of how firm his steering and clutch are. Makes mine feel like a cushy family car

Maybe I'm confused. Are we talking about how springy the clutch is or isn't?

The clutch pedal feel should stiffen over time. I'm told the heat on the springs for the pressure plate causes them to stiffen up. My clutch felt very soft when it was new, I've been driving stick for about 10 years and it was honestly kinda hard for me to drive smoothly. It feels way better now probably slightly due to me adjusting, but I do feel it has firmed up as well. 16k currently on mine.

Yeah it has firmed up a little, but still really deep and squishy >.>
Hopefully it just needs more than 15k to really break in I guess? |

WRX and BRZ clutches are firm compared to a run of the mill clutch like for example my civic. Remember we are talking about corvid's knee issues not omgz becuz race car 3 puck stage 7 clutches feel ok to daily drive on teh internetz. To a guy with knee issues BRZ and WRX clutches are going to feel a bit stiff. Personally I think the WRX and BRZ have perfect DD clutch feel but I wouldn't if I had bad knees.

I know we're talking about corvid's knees. I'm just stating that I noticed my WRX clutch has always been a whole lot stiffer compared to my STI or even Forester XT. The BRZ was very light and didn't require nearly as much leg work compared to the WRX.
Sometimes when my clutch leg would start to bug me I would change up my shifting technique to compensate. I like to downshift to slow down more than using the brakes, but if my leg bothered me from all the shifting then I would choose to put the car in neutral and just use the brakes to slow down. It hasn't happened THAT often. I think only on certain days when I've worked my legs hard already. |

the one i drove the clutch was very very similar to my WRX, not very firm or soft just kinda perfectly in the middle for a DD

LOL! I was told the exact opposite! My brakes still have plenty of bite despite the car having 35k miles. The engine can handle gearing down, and that's what the transmission and clutch are meant to do. It's built tough, unless your's is defective like mine. It's how I broke the engine in, too. Downshift, high rev, let it breathe in a bit. I never babied it, just try to keep it from the redline. Even during spirited driving I usually shift right before the redline.

technically speaking I don't think its even legal to do that. I believe if you take your road test in a manual car leaving it out of gear while rolling will fail you. Coasting out of gear can be dangerous because you can't react to certain hazards.
I don't generally downshift below third unless I am just in really slow traffic. Downshifting shouldn't cause much wear unless you do it wrong. |

^ You could probably also argue that downshifting alone isn't legal as it doesn't warn traffic behind you with your brake lights.

Yeah, I was going to say that it's the person's job behind you to give sufficient space. Anytime I can be in front of someone and slow down without using my brakes is preferred, since I feel like I'm doing my job to teach them to not rely on my brake lights to inform them of when they should be giving me space.
