Interesting... Well my eventual goal is about 400whp. But i dont want to just purchase a part and not gain anything from it. What i was thinking about doing was staying stg 2, gathering parts that i need and then throwing it all in at the same time with a tune and such. But im not so sure on what else would be considered a "performance" mod versus a "supporting" mod. Any info from those who have high hp cars would be great

Pretty much what these guys said. I love the whoosh of the Cobb SF intake and air box. I never get tired of it, but that's because I EXPECT my car to be noisy. If wanted quiet I wouldn't stick with Subaru.

My 400 whp STi was very simple. Intake, inlet, dom3, fmic, injectors, fuel pump, tgv delete, tune, tbe...I think that's about it. |

yeah cobb sf sounds good when you are in the mood for it. It sounds terrible when you are climbing long grades or if you aren't smooth with the throttle.
Eric from TP claims intakes showed worth while gains even at stage 2 levels. I couldn't really tell the difference. Butt dyno actually favored the axleback but idk I did see intake gains on virtual dyno though.. |

Thanks for the feed back guys, its much appreciated. I am also wondering about a EBCS, i know its for more precise tuning.. But at what point is it truly necessary?

this is what I found going from TP stage 1 to stage 1 + SF intake
Its possible the gains were just from getting on the throttle earlier..lol |

I just installed some KW V3's last night. Does anyone know how low you can potentially go in the front without rubbing with OEM BBS wheels? I don't need it dumped or anything like that, but I would like to have an idea of the limits.

I probably wouldn't go any lower than a 13" measurement from center of hub to peak of fender but that's from a performance perspective, not from a rubbing perspective. I'm sitting at 13.5" on my Bilsteins/RCE Blacks and it's about a 2 finger gap. Sorry I know that doesn't help with the rubbing question.

Ying - it is still useful information though, so thank you for your input! That's roughly about where I am at now from what I remember.

From everything I've read, the konis are far superior.

I test drove the 2010 STI last night. Subaru needs to stop fooling around with the WRX and only make varying trims of the STI, seriously. Sport Sharp mode is basically Stage 1 for the WRX.
Oh, and finally pictures of the fork that was faulty and should've been replaced under warranty: |

What I'm saying is that the STI can just switch a knob to feel like what my Stage 2 WRX feels like without the use of aftermarket intake or downpipe. My exhaust was still louder, though.
And if we're talking money, it would be cheaper to get a very de-contented STI to drop the price about $3k-$5k than to deal with even a base model WRX, either from a manufacturer's standpoint or enthusiast's standpoint. The WRX only sells because people haven't learned any better about it being a compromised product. I'd pay more for quality and support since Subaru stick their nose up at the WRX, but praises the STI. It's probably politics of price-point anyways. Short: Drop the STI 6-speed without the LSD into the WRX and raise the price, then call that the Base model STI. STI Premium would have side mirror blinkers, all-weather, HIDs, etc. Let's thin the herd a bit and stop all this nonsense with the WRX and the stigma that surrounds it. |

STi's have just as many problems as the WRX's since there are just inherent problems with boxer engines to begin with. Having come from a line of WRXs and STi's, the only things I miss from my STi is the DCCD and solid transmission. I actually prefer a 5 speed though. Everything else the STi has, I can live without.

the WRX sells because almost nobody knows how to take advantage of an sti except for drag launches. if you are going to hover around stock and never go to the track the sti is offering a bunch of stuff you don't need. half the people on here with stis pull off their enkeis/bbs's in favor of rotas or xxrs, throw knock off bc coils on and set them as low as possible, then they drive around at 5mph with the loudest exhaust possible trying not to bottom out...the owners compromise their own product

I can understand being cool with the 5-speed. I actually like the 5-speed. And, yes, I know STIs have their own share of problems. My 2005 STI was fine, but I know that more recent ones have had more pronounced issues.
What I'm getting at, though, is that we should just make it easier for everyone by only offering the 6-speed and calling it the STI, just dropping "WRX". Streamline. I'd sacrifice the 5-speed for the robust 6-speed. People would LEARN how to take advantage of the STI or they can go home. |

I think the next generation will get it right...if its anything like the BRZ it will be epic
The thing I have been wondering is whether the STI feels more special when you are just doing mundane things or if it feels exactly like the WRX? I mean from what I've heard the shifter and clutch aren't exactly a picnic. I mean its it really noticeable when you are just putzing around? Also the MPG is worse, its 200lbs heavier and its noisier apparently. |

I like the status quo
I would have to agree that there is some confusion amongst some buyers in regards to the STI and WRX however anybody that knows how to count and doesn't care about having the slower 6spd tranny knows that the WRX is the best bang for the buck. Lets face it if you use the 10k savings on Mods on a WRX its going to be way more car than any stock STI, and yet some morons will cry fowl calling it a wannabe STI, which is so far from the truth. Personally that wing on the STI sedan OMG what is that suppose to really do under 200 KMH?
