Default 2013 WRX Premium 5doors Speakers upgrade

Hello everyone! I ordered a 2013 WRX Hatchback with standard stereo system so I'm planning on upgrading it. Since I'm getting a very good deal from Infinity/JBL factory I'm going to order everything first. Here's a list of what I'm ordering:

- OEM Head Unit
- Amp: JBL MS-A10004 (This has a built in DSP and can take High-level input)
- MS-WBC Wireless bass-boost controller
- Front: Infinity Kappa Perfect 6.1
- Rear: Infinity Kappa63.9I
- SVX 20-pin Combined wiring harness (might just splice into the factory harness as I'm very handing with this stuff)

Can't wait to start this project. My car can't get here fast enough. I will definitely update with installation pictures once my car is here.

Updated links to all products listed.

No sound processor since you're keeping the stock HU?

This is going to sound noobish but I have no clue that I need a sound processor. I thought I just need to connect the HU to the amp lol. I don't even have a clue what the function of a sound processor (from the name I'm guessing it's going to convert/process sounds).

Also I would like to apologize for my fobby use of English. It isn't my first language. And I'm also very new to car audio but I'll be having a friend that used to work at Car Audio installation to help me.

After researching It seems that amplifier I listed might have that function built in.

I just replaced the HU on my 2013 wrx, it seriously is a major downfall of the audio system in the car. The stock speakers aren't that bad to be honest much better than the ones that are included in the 2007 sti that my friend has. I went after an Alpine unit single din, i despise touch screens of all kinds and using one in a car while driving in traffic would probably cause terrible road rage.

From a respectable sound engineer "You can make 10$ walmart speakers sound good with the proper equalization" consider that when thinking about a HU get something with an equalizer and it can mask cheaper speakers only down side is you can't make an amplifier more powerful with an EQ.

Good sources of info that i've found.

http://www.subaruaudio.net/subaru-speaker-spacers/

You will need adapters for the speakers there are some good sources for those on the previous links. Also consider sound deadenign for your doors it will make everything sound better, even driving with the stereo off.

Yeah I read most of subaruaudio stuff. Like I mentioned I want to keep the stock HU. I only have discounts on speakers and amplifier so I prefer to just upgrade those. Can someone tell me if I need a sound processor with the set up I'm planning to use?

Yes, or some form of equalization for your sound or else your setup will sound like amplified garbage

Hmmm I thought that amp has built in equalizer since you can adjust all the bass/gain and such on it. May be I'll just get a new HU and call it a day lol.

Edit: Found out I can get the JBL MS-2 or MS-8 for VERY cheap. So the sound processor part is solved. I'll most likely go with the MS-2 as it doesn't require any installation and seem to fit what I need the best.

Amplifiers come with Highpass and Lowpass filters to limit the extremes through the amplifier. This is not equalization. There are equalizers that you can run inline with RCA's but taking an input from a bad signal isn't going to be more difficult to equalize the way you want it to sound. Keep in mind that with signal units (a head unit or cd player) there is no such thing as a flat EQ. The stock HU is exceptionally bad. So keep in mind that the more you try and re adjust an already bad eq the more distortion and clipping your likely to add to your music.

I'm interested as to why your so resistant to replace the HU?

I just want to keep that OEM look and I don't use my stereo for anything else beside listening to my ipod so upgrading the HU seems like a waste. I forgot to mention there's a thread with instruction how to disable the fixed EQ on the OEM HU.

The Rainbow CSX 265 components fit very nicely and don't suck. I am pushing them with an Alpine MRX V60 amp that is bridged for the front.

Thank for the suggestion Johnny. I have read about that Rainbow csx 265. However I'll just be using the twitters packaged with the kappa perfect and find a way to fit it into the oem twitters (which is on the A pillar)

Yeah I thought so because after researching the OEM twitters are about 1" as well. I can't wait to get the car so I can work on this project. There's going to be so much to do with that car (clay/wax/polish, Clear bra install, mud flaps, possible tail light overlay, some 1080 cf wrapping around the car)

Update: Found a much better amplifier and eliminated the need for a sound processor and LOC.

As far as re using the factory wires it might be possible but its going to require a lot of cutting into the stock harness. You'd need to intercept the wires and bring them to where your amplifier is located some how. It's probably much easier to just run wires to your speakers. Depending on the power your running to can get away with a very small gauge wire 16, maybe 18 if you don't feel like listening to social norms.

I'm interested as to how you are going to disable the fixed EQ. Link to the post?

Also how are you going to run your amp, Highlevel inputs? You'll need to figure out how your going to get signal from the stock HU to your amplifier.

Link for hidden menu in 2011+ OEM HU:
http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=2317060

In that thread you can find that it's possible to put the EQ in Through mode (which proven to be flat EQ).

If using the factory wires resulting in the system not at full potential then I think I'll just run quality speaker wires to the amp. The JBL MS-A1004 is built to accept both low and high level signals safely (or at least I hope a $500 class D amplifier should be safe) so I will be running the amp with high level inputs. The amp comes with adapters to turn the stock HU harnesses into RCA plugs. I will do a VERY detail video/picture installation of this once I have the car.

Now I need help finding a good place to mount this amp. It needs to be accessible so I can adjust the EQ settings. I'm thinking my truck space is the best but it would get in the way if I was to need the space to transport something big. Any other idea? I also thought about under the passenger seat but space it so I can access those buttons by pulling the passenger seat all the way back or something like that.

Ahhh the more I do research on this stuff the more anxious I'm getting with the wait of my car. The car won't be around until at least January 2013 T.T

Also I like to thanks all the helpful resources and supports of this forum. I went from a complete noob and scare of DYI car audio installation to confidence I can put all this together with ease. The only thing I would have tough time with is wires management, crossover location, and speaker spacers installation.

It will definitely fit in there. But I want to keep the spare tire in there lol. I think I'll just mount it to the back of the smaller rear seat or make a flush mount box/enclosure thing to mount it to the side where the tire molding is.

This came in today. Amp and rear speakers are still in transit.
Update: Amp, and rear speakers all came in now. Will update with picture soon. Also got update on my car and the car will be here 12/31/2012 so I guess I won't have to wait long to put all this together.

Before you install spend a couple days listening to the stock system. That way you'll build up a nice amount of dislike for it and as a result appreciate your build that much more.

I'll have to do that either way. I am still waiting to hear back from SXV then I will probably be too busy that weekend (new year and what not) to install it. But I am coming from an acura with Bose premium sound system so I'm pretty sure I will notice the difference lol.

need help from audio installation experts:

So as my car is close to getting here now I am preparing all the wiring harness so I can simply install the speakers and amp once the car gets here. I know about SVX 20-pin combined harness however $40 is a steep price for it when I know I can make the same exact item for half the price. From research I found Metra 70-7552 and 71-7552 can be combined to make the same item with SVX 20 pin harness. Can someone confirm this? I don't know if the wiring colors will be the same but I don't care as I'll be able to figure it out base on the table SVX provided on his site.

Well if the wiring colors are different just make sure you set it up as straight through.

I have a feeling the plain metra plugs may need to be modified. They do on my Nav, but I'm not 100% sure for the stock unit.

I say spend the extra $$ and get through SVCdc. He's super helpful and his resources like the ae64 website are immensely helpful to all of us, and remember, web hosting isn't free.

^ lol I know someone was going to say that. I appreciate all the info SVX has posted for free on his site so I was considering getting the harness from him. I'm just being a cheap @ss and trying to save a few bucks ($20 saving actually). but after spending $31k for the car and about $300 for the speakers and amp I'm just getting cheap lol.

Yup. Plus his harness is straight through. If you made it yourself you'll likely have 20 wires crimped together, making multiple little points of failure that might give you really irritating gremlins.
