Stuck..I don't know what to do... Bigger N/A Motor or 1.8 Turbo
Hey guys
I'm looking to purchace a turbo kit for my 93 EJ18 LS AWD elec/auto Impreza. The kit is going to cost around $3,000.00 and in the end giving my EJ18 roughley 180hp and 180ft/lbs of tourque. However I know once I turbo charge the EJ18 Thats about all I can do to that motor (without a total engine rebuild). However iI have been thinking about dropping an EJ25 into my car. I know that if I did drop a EJ25 I would be running 165/hp and 170 ft/lbs but if I was to turbo charge it I would have 257/hp and 265ft/lbs (running off a simmilar kit to the 1.8 kit)....but I would run N/A for a good bit before I turbocharge. Here are my concerns. Will my tranny hold up to the new numbers? I know that it will bolt up to the EJ25 and it would be suffiecient for a N/A 2.5 but a turbo charged one? And which one is cheaper??? A turbo kit for my EJ18 or a N/A EJ25 with complete installation? I woulden't install the motor myself for I don't have the rescorces and time to do the swap. The Impreza is my daily driver and I need the swap to be done as quick as possible. What would the reliability be for the turbocharged EJ18? and would a turbocharged EJ25 be more durable? MY biggest thing is price, if an EJ25 swap is cheaper then a EJ18 turbo kit....in goes the 2.5...but if not would it be worth the extra bucks to install the 2.5? or just turbo charge my 1.8?...

after market turbos are a money pit and they all break eventually
thats why people do swaps buy find a nice rolled wrx and swap the engines it will be cheeper and might actually run correctly na 2.5s are a waste of time i know i have had 2 of them |

would a 2.2 swap from another impreza be better? I want something reliable.. And if I get the motor from a 2.0 wrx how much do you think that would set me back??? thanks.....

With your budget, I would go the 2.5 motor route. Only about 10 splices are required and your 1.8 ecu will run the motor just fine. Being your daily driver is another concern. I have done this exact swap in my shop in under 8 hrs, drive in -drive out. The 2.5 will be a blast to drive in the L compared to the 110 hp the 1800 puts out.
Plus, these motors can be had for less that $500. Stuffing the 1.8 is labor intensive and expensive. Your end product is a motor that is beyond its limits. Although, there is a guy locally who has been driving his turbo'd 1.8 for a few years w/ no problems. All the money he has put into it to make 200 WHP could have been spent on a WRX swap that is much more tunable and upgradeable. If you had the $$, yes the WRX drivetrain swap is the hot ticket, but for under $1000 including labor (at FIS anyway) you could gain 50hp and 65 or so pound feet of torque. Let me know if I can help _Rick FIS Last edited by RickInLittleElm; 09-22-2004 at 06:12 PM. Reason: because I have an alligator in my toilet....ouch! |

The WRX swap (motor, trans, diff, axles, harness, etc) will most likely run close to $8K installed. This is parts and labor...Still worth every penny, but if you are on a budget, again the 2.5 is not a bad deal. _Rick FIS |

how unrelaible is the 2.5? I thought it would be a reliable route for me. I want my car to be a daily driver...thats the bottom line!!! My price range is up to $3K But cheaper is beter . If there is a good reliable 2.5 I can put in my car ...I'M all for it...thanks rick

I also have a question about this. A ej25 for less than $500? Sign me up!! Maybe I'm just not looking hard enough. BTW, is that the SOHC, or DOHC, as I would prefer the former.
Also, I just swapped an ej22 into my ej18 impreza wagon this past August. The only reason I didn't do anything bigger was b/c I had the engine already (from my busted transmissioned Legacy). It gives it some more pop, and for free, it was well worth it. However, I wouldn't recommend paying anybody to do this. It was pretty much a no-brainer if you have the tools, but 20 more hp and 35 ft/lbs of torque ain't worth the cost a garage would charge you in labor to do it. |

The SOHC 2.5 is the more desireable choice. Someone else may need to chime in on this one, but I believe the DOHC 2.5 was prone to head gasket failure. Also, I think it was a 1 year only engine.
As far as reliability goes, the SOHC 2.5 is a really nice engine as long as you dont spray it or run more than 6psi of boost thru it. Again if you want turbo, save your pennies for the WRX drivetrain, but this is still a good, cheap swap. As far as finding them for cheap, be patient. Contact a nabisco member who has done the wrx swap. Alot of these guys have the motors sitting in their garage collecting dust. I had a guy give me one because he didn't want to mess with storing or selling it. _Rick FIS |

You're comparing apples to oranges here. Yes, they both have right around the same power numbers, BUT there's a difference to the power. What do you want the car to be good at? If straight line racing is your thing then get some kind of turbo. If you want the altimate autocross car then do the 2.5 and beef it up. You can get upwards of 250 hp out of a n/a 2.5 engine.
My advice on doing somthing like this on any kind of bugdet is think this: Power, reliability, cheap cost: pick two. B |

I sold my entire WRX motor, ecu, and drivetrain for 3k. You can get just the motor and ECU for cheaper. Talk to Homemade WRX, he has done a WRX swap on a budget.

I have purchased two JDM WRX front clips for around $2000 each, both had the complete drive train (engine tranny, driveline and rear diff) with them. I got a call yesterday from a guy who told me that he is getting a 95 in around the first of October, he wants $2500 for it. If you have some time, you might look around, it might be possible to swap a JDM WRX setup in you car. I just finished my swap into my 96 1.8 Brighton, probably the best thing I ever did. My total cost, including the purchase of the Brighton was about $6000.

Just remember that all of these guys saying a WRX swap can be done on a budget have done the work themselves. If you are prepared to do the swap yourself, then you can pull it off for less than $4k, like 96wrx did. His is a real sweet package, too. It's something to think about.
