Default What to do for maximum acceleration and/or traction....

I was just wondering since I was looking at tires and the various sizes some of you have chosen...What size and/or dimensions ,in your opinion, would offer maximum acceleration and traction? My guess is the the size doesn't really make a difference but the width would... What's your take? Btw, I could care less for the search function on this one cuz i want some fresh opinions. Thanks to those that choose to respond!

Size makes a big difference, the size will have you trading acceleration for top end and vice versa. (Smaller = increased acceleration, lower top end.) Also, a smaller tire/wheel combo is likely to weigh less than stock, which will further improve acceleration.

I'm still on stock wheels and tires, so I have nothing else to contribute. Just letting you know that size does matter.

You will get a better response in the wheels and tires thread, its kinda hard to search for since its an entire forum. J/K
As said above, size does make a difference as does width as does what type of tires they are. A R compound tire is going to stick a lot better than a $40 tire with no treadware rating It all depends on what you want to do. Drag racing, autocross or just fun in the backroads.

MOd free on the everthing right now since i am concerned about "voiding" warranty. But my preference is to have a good, balanced tire for everday driving with an emphasis on PAVED road, LOL. I notice many here like the P-zero. I am thinking 17 inch but not sure on the rest...help?

Although I am still on the stock tire and wheel, The Pzero is my first choice for tire. Just get a nice wide tire, but not to wide for the wheel. If you ask at the tire shop they should be able to tell you what size will work well on your wheel. You don't want to go to wide or you will get uneven wear.

Well, the standard "plus one" sizing for a WRX is usually a 225/45/17 tire. That's what I'm running for daily driving and autocross. I'm looking for minimal sidewall flexing as I corner. A more drag-biased setup might even mean smaller wheels and tires. Also, sidewall flex is desirable for drag racing to help put down straight line power.

You could go for a wider 16 inch wheel and do 225/50/16 tires if you are extremely concerned about daily comfort. It's a small difference that never really bothered me.

I haven't heard of someone voiding their warranty by buying different sized tires. The thing to watch out for is your gauges - smaller tires make the odometer and speedometer run fast. My advice would be to +1 the size if you do anything. Cobb stage 1 should be a bit cheaper than that, though.

A stock WRX isn't powerful enough that off the line traction is going to be an issue. And once you're rolling, there's no way you're going to spin the tires no matter what you do. So if you're interested in cornering performance, get some nice sticky rubber on there in a wider size, like 225/50-16 (on the stock wheels) or 225/45-17 or 235/45-17 on aftermarket 17 inch wheels.

You'd have to make a lot of power to spin the wheels on a WRX, so off the line isn't really an issue. One thing, heavier wheels will spin up slower. Something around 17lbs and +1 sizing would probably work well for you, and then decide how sticky a tire you want for cornering. If it's just a road car, you probably don't need high performance summers.

Taller wheels do not provide more grip. Get wheels that are big enough to clear your brakes.. anything taller is just excess. If you want the steering feel and reaction to improve, install some steering rack bushings, firmer swaybars and suspension bushings.

(That said, 17" wheels do look very good. They won't 'ruin' your car by any means. I don't mean for it to sound like they are bad. 18's are pushing it and 19s are just plain rediculous)

For the original poster: Get some Hankook RS-2 tires (cheap and super grippy), and dial in as much negative camber as you can get from the front wheels. If you haven't yet, get some swaybars as they will increase grip by reducing camber losses while turning.

Anything else after that and you start getting really limited returns for your investment and lack of comfort.

Interesting points of view. Thanks guys. If I put me some new tires I will go for 17" for sure. Everything else is gind of not set in stone yet.
