Have a Nice Day? D'OH! I just hit a curb...sideways

Yeah, it's snowing here, and when it does, I have this nasty habit of drifting into the parking lot at work. Well, today, for some reason, the car didn't want to grab...at all.

So, that being said, I went into the snow bank, and curb, sideways, about 10mph. I heard a thunk, and then I parked and checked the rims and tires. No noticeable damage. Should I worry about any further repurcussions of this? Or should I be OK?

Front control arms ok? I know those are a common broken item when hitting curbs.

Last time I did that I caused 5,500 dollars of damage. I would have the alignment checked even if nothing appears broken.

alignment time...

you'll definately need one...

and there's prolly damage... you'll notice it later and likely it's just to the rims..

I did the same thing last night except I mangled my drivers side control arm and really scuffed up my rim. Oh well. I blame it all on the RE92's that did not want to stick to the ground at all last night.

don't blame the tires, blame the driver.

you know how bad the re92's are and you still drive fierce or semi-fierce?

unless you guys are going to say you didn't know the re92's were bad until you read about them here after the mistake, you guys better not complain too much

of course, i've curbed ALL my cars but my subarus (4 subarus in 12 years, never curbed on). i think its because i've always canned the tires first thing out the door. 4 new tires is usually less than $400, >1< curbing always costs more than $400 eventually (time wasted, stress, actual damage, realignments, etc). have you priced ONE oem rim lately?

i think we need to have a policy here. no posting rights until you get rid of the RE92's...anyone want to vote on that? hehehe

Woohoo! Been there, done that! No problems. Then again, it depends on how fast you were going. Gotta admit, those RE92's do suck. Can't wait to wear 'em down. One more good excuse to autocross.

yeah, see, I wasn't going very fast...and I've done this before, so I'm not blaming it on the tires, or my driving. Hell, I'm not blaming anyone or anything, IT JUST HAPPENED.

so those of you being helpful, thanks. Those of you not, why reply?

oh i didn't mean to be not helpful to you jgard, i just think a good lashing will be helpful to everyone who HASN'T made this mistake yet. i've seen it too many times to count with those damn RE92's... something someone's done a billion times before in the snow, and this one time it doesn't stick like it should.

we need to warn everyone over and over again not to trust anything to the RE92's, even if you've done it before. they're too unpredictable, that's the point of the lashing...

RE92's suck eh? I dont know about some of you sometimes. I've had my car in over a foot of untracked snow on the RE92's with no problems.

Dont blame the equipment after your negligance(sp?) broke it.

I'm all for fun, but geeze, use some commonsense.

Heya-
Eugenekid, I have done the same exact thing you have and used to have that attitude until I realized that they DO suck and that almost any other tire is an improvement over the RE-92's. Just cause I CAN do that with the stock tires, doesn't mean SHOULD do that with the stock tires.

I think what Jim was pointing out is that, this is exactly HOW accidents occur. He's done it before, same thing, same speed, etc but it just didn't catch. And he didn't blame the equipment at all.

He was simply asking what he should be aware of after the fact. =)

Go JIM! You leave a Scooby Angel in the snowbank?

What I like to do in a situation like this is get back in the car and slide it sideways into the curb again, only this time hit the opposite side of the car.
That way everything balances out.

Oh, I'm sorry, I wasn't blaming jim, just curious about the whole tyre issue in general. I'll be the first to admit I have no idea about the dynamics of a lot of stuff out there. What I find hard to understand is the "unpredicability" of a tire. It has no moving parts. It should "act" the same on a day to day basis, be it good or bad. Granted tread will wear and air pressure will rise and fall and the road conditions change, but I still dont see the unpredictable nature of a tire. Will it grip today? Will it not grip today? I see it as "will this piece of paper let me write on it today?" The paper's attitude will never change about me writing on it, but the pen may run out of ink. That is the only thing stopping me. I see the tire acting as the paper, always constant.

Just me babbling, I think I may have strayed a bit too Like I said, I have no idea what I'm saying, but it makes sence to me

I'm sure my attitude will totally change when the time comes for me to change my tyre's. I know a lot of you guys out there live and breath this stuff and know a ton more than me.

Again. sorry jim, didnt mean to come off as the arse I did I hope your car is ok.

well guys, after further inspection...

what i hit was not, in fact, a curb. just a large, frozen snow bank.

so instead of worrying about suspension/rims/tire damage, I now have a couple BIG gashes in my rear quarter. All of them are on the bumper, at least, but many of them about a foot long, and right down to the primer. So, needless to say...I'M pissed.

but i've been driving a lot today, and the car feels solid, and still goes straight, so I think worrying about an alignment may not be necesary. Damn snow/ice!

Haha, sounds exactly like something i did this past fall, took a sharp freeway off ramp a little too fast on a rainy day, slid sideways and *UP* onto a curb. I was pretty sure i destroyed my suspension with the noise, but surprisingly my car drove away fine, minus a bruise to the ego, however, i do think my alignment has suffered a little as i have to fight to keep it straight on the fast freeways =(
