Post best engine upgrade for the money?

what do you guys think? What single or small group of upgrades gives you the best improvement for the buck? Describe the nature of the improvement.

1- Lessen the air pressure drop in the intake before the turbo. This also helps spool up the turbo faster.

- Remove the intake silencer in the fender well. (free)

- Seal the airbox to the fender or replace the silencer with some flexible 3" tubing to the intake snorkel to take advantage of the high air pressure area in front of the radiator. (free - $10)

- Replace the air filter with a high flow type. ie K&N, ITG, Amsol. ($50 I like the ITG the best)

2- Maximize the stock ignition & boost map.

- Run the fuel tank empty (the needle is touching the "E"). Fill up with 93 octane gas. After driving a few miles to make sure the engine is only using 93 octane gas disconnect the postive lead on the battery for 1/2 hour to reset the computer. Warm up the car and with four adults (weight) in the car run it hard up some steep grades. (free, you should be running premium gas anyway. Just find where the 93 octane is located.)

3- If you live in an area that has low humidity build a DIY water mister for the intercooler. Spraying a fine mist of water into the air before the intercooler will cool the intercooler from evaporation. And the resulting cooler intercooler will help give the engine denser air.

4- Lessen the exhaust backpressure. (I read somewhere that the stock WRX exhaust has 9psi of backpressure at WOT. Replacing the muffler brings it to 6psi and replacing the stock 2 Cat pipe with a high flow down pipe and 1 Cat brings it to 3psi. This also helps the turbo spool up.)

- Replace the stock muffler with a high flow unit. (varies greatly. Buy a good stainless steel one so you never have to replace it.)

- Replace the stock 2 Cat pipe with a high flow 1 Cat pipe and downpipe. (Varies greatly. Again get SS. I wonder the effectiveness of the high flow downpipe because the improvement is mostly for the wastegate port and the wastegate will not open at under 9psi of boost. So really this is only an improvement when at WOT)

- Replace the stock exhaust manifold with a equal length, no Cat tubular manifold. (Price ?)

3- More boost.

- This is new territory with the WRX so watch out what you are doing and have full instrumentation (Boost & EGT at least. I am personally waiting for the UniChip ECU I don't like the "safety margins" people and cutting into using MBC & EBC's. People are seeing EGT's rise significantly with only upping the Boost to 15psi).

There is nothing new here. Any engine is really an air pump. The more air you can move in and out the more fuel you can add and the more power you can create.

I bought my ITG at Eurosport www.eurosportacc.com for $50-60 with shipping.

I like it much better than the K&N in my Neon ACR. Case in point. I worked at the Headwaters Rally this last weekend and was driving my WRX all over the course. When I came home I expected to vaccum out the filter (a lot of dust) It didn't really need to vaccumed but a K&N would have been clogged.

Ummm....wouldnt that mean that the ITG was allowing *more* dust to pass through than the K&N? Or is dust in the engine not really much of an issue?
Im not flaming here, just wondering what filter would be best, as I've also heard that oil from the K&N's can foul up air flow sensors.

No dust was in the intake track after the air filter. It really is about the difference on how the filters work.

The K&N is a cotton gauss that is oil impregnated. The dust and dirt gets cought in the oil and becomes a part of the filter medium. The only problem is the the surface area of the gauss isn't that great and the K&N does need to be cleaned every once in a while.

The ITG is oil impregnated multi density open cell foam. The cells get smaller as the air goes through the foam. The dirt get's caught in the big cells and the dust gets caught in the smaller cells. The effective area of the foam is much larger than the cotton gauss. I didn't see much dirt on the ITG because it isn't a single layer as in the K&N

A K&N is a big improvement over the stock filter. The ITG is taking the oil impregnated filter one step farther in making a better filter.

I have no problems recomending the ITG filter.

This is nonsense, IMHO. Should I also perform a ritual dance around the car and do animal sacrifices to please the ECU gods?

I'm just regurgitating what the Aussies have been saying. Put in good gas, reset the ECU and run up some hills with a lot of weight in the car. A how-to on resetting the ECU is even on MRT's web page.

The people down-under have been playing with the Rex longer than we have so what the hell, The ECU reset is free. And he was asking for the most bang for the buck.

The thing I don't understand is why people want to just run the airbox into the fender well area and not take advantage of the stock air snorkle that is taking the higher pressure air the is before the radiator. Subaru put those twin seals on the underside of the hood for a reason. But I guess people like hearing the turbo noise reverberating off the fender sheetmetal.

No I don't have the part # for the ITG filter. I was refered to Eurosport by ITG as they are the US importer for ITG. I think they would have the best price.

ITG stands for Induction Technology Group.

Their web site is www.itgairfilters.com

It's a very well made web site that talks about their filters.

Like I said before the K&N is a good filter. But ITG is a step above K&N.
