That. Manuals are associated with economy in the US, with the assumption that anyone who can afford an auto would buy one, therefore anyone who cannot afford an auto surely cannot afford leather.

I've never met anyone in my life who let price sway their decision on transmission type. If CVT came at no cost, I doubt many 5MT guys here would have changed their minds.

Agreed. If I ever had the money to buy a Porsche 911, I'd buy it with a stick, even though I know the car would be faster with the DSG tranny. When people tell me that cars are faster these days, and get the same or better fuel economy, when equipped with the new DSG trannies, I tell them I don't care. I don't drive cars with a stick so that I can win races. I drive cars with a stick because I enjoy the process of shifting.

The XV wasn't available yet when I bought my Impreza, but even if it was, I would have chosen the Impreza. I prefer cars with a lower center of gravity, and I feel that Subaru tacks an extra $2k onto the XV's price without providing anything more than the lift and body plastics that give it a more rugged appearance. Clearly there's more profit for Subaru in the XV than there is in the Impreza. That's fine with me, as I want Subaru to be successful. So if the market for the XV will pay $2k more for inexpensive cosmetic changes, so be it.

The XV Hybrid might be a legitimate reason to choose an XV, if the fuel economy improvement justifies the higher price it will command. But again, if Subaru ever introduced an Impreza Hybrid (I don't see why they couldn't; they'll already have the R&D work done from the XV Hybrid), I'd choose that model over the XV Hybrid.

But regardless of all that, I don't hate the XV. It's too close to the Impreza I like to hate it. I just wouldn't choose to buy one over an Impreza.

IMHO.
the price difference between the Impreza Sport and XV is $1300 iirc.
and for that you get a well rounded package of upgrades such as suspension, brakes, cooling, gearing, towing capacity, plus all the trim amd doodads. 1300 is how much extra I paid to upgrade from a base impreza to a premium. So I don't think that the xv is quite the plastic aesthetic package you are imagining.
When I drive down dirt "roads" that $1300 is well worth it.
lol did I mention it comes with foglights??

My lifted car fetish started in traffic when I saw a late 90's OB Sedan and thought it looked really badass. Then at the Florida Folk Featival I parked next to an XV in DGM. I really lioed it. On my way home I bottomed out pretty hard on a pothole in my Impreza, so I started thinking more ground clearance would be nice.
The extra height also makes getting into and out of the vehicle much more comfortable.

Yeah, I just looked up XV pricing on my dealership's web site. Since they offer no-dicker sticker pricing, it's easy to see what they charge for their cars. I'd say your $1300 price difference between the XV Premium and Impreza Sport Premium looks about right:

http://www.vanbortelsubaru.net/new-i...elections=true

BTW, the Impreza Sport Premium comes with foglights too.

hey don't get me wrong- when I first heard about the XV I thought it was a stupid idea and scoffed at the very notion of a "lifted impreza".
but considering that a sunroof is what, a thousand dollars, or thereabouts, 1300 for the "offroad/towing" package is a bargain.

Absolutely, if you want a sunroof and towing capabilities.

But if you want a car with a lower center of gravity, geared more for acceleration than pulling torque, and that gets better gas mileage, then the XV is not the preferred choice.

Please don't misunderstand my message. I was responding to your statement that some people will "hate" the XV. My response was that I can't imagine how anybody who likes the Impreza hatchback would "hate" the XV, and vice versa. I can see how people, including myself, will prefer one over the other, but I don't see how anybody who likes one would hate the other.

I prefer the Impreza. You prefer the XV. I don't hate the XV. Not including your previous oil-burning car, do you hate the Impreza?

I didn't think so.

I like the khaki and even the orange color and bodywork.

The slight differences? Not much really, I don't drive offroad and my Sport with snows is all I need in the hilltowns where I live, that have more in common with Vermont than NYC.

I don't see adding more weight to the engine though, they should have offered the XV with a bigger engine IMHO.

I can't imagine that the XV weighs much more than the Impreza hatchback. Bigger tires? A lift kit? What do you think? Less than 100 lbs?

So you have a 5sp XV now and used to have an Impreza CVT? What is the difference in mpg?

I'll agree with this^
IMHO the fb25 would have been a better match. Is 20-25 hp earth-shaking? No. But it would give the car that extra little bit of oomph and torque and I doubt it would kill mpg's all that badly. The legacy seems to do well with it and its heavier than the Impreza.

And- if the fb20 is really just a sleeved-down fb25, I doubt theres any weight difference.

No, but I was saying that for a little more than the optional sunroof you can get an XV vs an Impreza.
The impreza is a way better choice for commuting and stuff like that.
The love it or hate it thing is just my opinion. I think a regular impreza would suit most folks better. But for some of us the xv is a better buy even though we lose a few mpg's. The cost difference for a year of operating an xv vs an impreza is $100 @ 12,000 miles and 3.36 a gallon.

I come up with 174....just using combined average of 28vs25....

On a side note, I haven't seen sub 3.50 in a long time

I like the xv, kinda wish I could have waited to order, but I couldn't. But in my situation that 3mpg difference is closer to 400/yr, because like I said, haven't filled up at sub 3.50 since memorial day

I guess we have it good here. Regular is 3.30-something, premium is around 3.70, and diesel is a little cheaper than premium!
badass ethanol-free 90 is only 3.99-429.

Ethanol free 87 is 3.59 currently (very few stations), and ethanol free 91(nearly every station) was 4.04 or 4.14 last time I checked.

Gas prices have been slowly dropping here in the past couple weeks, but they are sill hovering around $3.60 for 87. I'm still so jealous of you people who have the choice of ethanol free gas.
