im researching to buy an intake...
the intakes i have came down to get is between the K&N and SPT.
-i have not read anything bad about the K&N.
-however i have read that the SPT intake runs at a higher temperature than other aftermarket intakes due to the aluminum...is this true?

out of the two intakes, which one is recommended?

i drive an 07 STi with a TurboXS TBE on a Cobb Stage 2 Tune.

I drive an 09 WRX with the Typhoon intake, Turbo XS TBE, Torqued Performance stage 2 tune and couldnt say anything bad about anything.

Typhoon intake gives a tad bit of power but it def. makes a huge difference in the "sucking" noise.

I'd go with the Typhoon over SPT parts. Im not a fan of SPT. Poor quality when comparing the two brands.

Why not get the Cobb SF Intake?

Alright Unabomber... I'm calling you out. Not really. I'm keeping the stock intake on my car because I think intakes are a waste of time unless it's a racecar. What are your thoughts on a foam panel filter i.e. Perrin vs. and an oiled K&N panel filter?

If you are running a Cobb tune, you can only run Cobb's SF intake or the stock airbox. They dont have tunes spec'd for the K&N or the SPT.

Panel filters are fine. Pick which ever fits your budget. You just cant change the intake charge piping, without a protune, as the diameter or orientation of the MAF sensor can throw the MAF scaling off.

Yea I know about the diameter thing. Just curious if there's any advantages to a foam over a oiled gauze.

The only advantage to running the foam filter over the oiled K&N is that you don't have to worry about sucking oil onto the MAF. HOWEVER, if you don't drench the K&N with oil, you wont have any issues, and you can clean it evey now and then and use it for years to come.

I always clean the MAF after drive 25 to 50 miles or so when using an oiled filter even if I know I didn't over oil it. JIC.

The Perrin drop in filter still takes oil but they claim you don't have to drench it in oil because you can work it into the foam manually where as the K&N you have to drench it in order to get the oil in all the crevices.

You don't have to drench it. Just bend the filter a little. I always get the spray on recharge kits, and it specifically says NOT to drench it. Just spray it on until theres an even red tint all the way across the filter. If you spray 6 inches away like says, and move in a steady motion, you can get an even coat on it (even in the crevices) without drenching it.

Also it says to let it sit for 20 minutes so the application of the oil has time to soak in evenly, so this negates having to drench it to get an even coat.

Looking for a serious answer here-

I bought my 07 sti used and it's in great shape.
Previous owner opensource tuned it to stage2 with a cbe along with the stock airbox.

My question: since it's already tuned to stage2. Can I just go ahead and bolt on an intake without tuning it again? Or will I need a retune?

If you are looking for a serious answer, here is one: do NOTHING to your car until you realize 100% of the information about open source tuning as bolting ANYTHING to your car that is not tuned for can lead to you buying a new motor.

they do bring in some power but they are not really needed until you upgrade the turbo. especially on the new ones, the stockers are good until 350-400 whp

Question.

My '05 WRX came with the Snorkus already removed, it has a plastic plug covering where it would enter into the fender at. (Im pretty sure it still has the silencer and everything else, as it's very quiet)

Would it be worth while to track down a snorkus and put it back in?

Question Issues with SPT Intake???

does running an SPT intake create an issue running a stage 1 COBB flash on a '07 WRX? i ran into someone the other day adamantly expressing that i should hold off on installing it until i can get a protune.

I am running an AP flashed with "stage 2" 93 map. I recently removed my SPT intake and heat shield and went back to stock setup and reflashed. It made a huge difference and smoothed out the power curve. With the SPT intake I would feel a fluttering in boost at WOT and it was not smooth...it would come in inconsistent 'surges.' I would recommend waiting on the intake and spend your money elsewhere.

so we can conclude that on a wrx without a tune, an intake is useless??

just my 2 cents but i removed my intake silencer, im running stock intake, and ive been driving around without my passenger fender for a couple of days since its getting painted and ive noticed a BIG difference in the way the car runs. the direct airflow makes turbo spool up sooo much quicker and the car feels like it drives a lot smoother. but of course i cant be driving around without a fender lol so i feel that the stock intake works good, it just needs room to breathe

Are there any drawbacks to using a short ram intake such as Cobb's or SPT's?

Would an aps intake without a tune be the cause of hesitation when i first get on it? When i initially put the pedal to the metal in first it's almost like the car is thinking about it before it goes. I bought the car back in march with the intake already installed.

The section entitled "Which intakes do not cause problems with the air/fuel ratio?" needs a BIG disclaimer. Those claims are ONLY on the old models (like in 04, when this thread was written), any intake 08+ needs a tune STAT! Maybe this is why so many people try to run untuned intakes on the 08+...NONE of those claims apply to the 08+ models, this should be clarified in the post.

Default intake curiousity

I work as a mechanic at a honda dealer, and am forever feeling sad/frustrated at all these cars coming in with aftermarket intakes. More often then not you can tell even at idle that it is a bit off. Anyways, Unibombers intake FAQ brought up interesting info about air turbulence throwing off the MAF reading.
You know those fuel saver little turbine things you put in your intake? I am wondering if one of those would help get rid of this air turbulence.
When going through school at UTI I had got a chance to play with a dyno and various verhicles/engines. A fellow student had one of these "fuel savers". So we put a stock 350 on the dyno, then followed up with a couple runs. Put the fuel saver on there, and retested. No gains in HP as the box had claimed. Not so sure about actual fuel saving though. I have never been a fan personally of these types of things. Consider them to be a hoax. But it would be interesting to see if it can help reduce air turbulence since it is kind of "guiding" the air flow.
