The turbo your using may have alot to do with the peak rpm your car pulls too. Even with a stock location 30r style turbo (mine has a 2.5" inlet) my car really peaks out at around 7500 or so. If your still using the vf turbo then thats probably why the car peaks so quickly...a frien of mine around here with a swapped ver 8 bugeye wagon says the same thing...I think he had the twin scroll vf37 and he says it'll rev to 8k, but falls off quick at 6500.
hope that helps Trey |

Hi, thanks for your help. I am using the Dom 3 with the 2.5 inch inlet. I shift at 7,000rpm as it doesn't make sense going any higher; you can feel the car losing power.

Yeah, I'm actually using the dom 2.5r, and have often thought the smaller inlet on these turbos has to be choking it off some...I've even thought of going to the dom 4 for that reason alone...lol

Yeah, it must be the smaller inlet holding it back. It is unfortunate as I was really hoping for it to pull hard to 8,000rpm.

we are using dom3 with samco turbo inlet, samco maf hose and aps 70mm cai and this inlet setup really improved the top end also the header effect very much.

I also have the 70mm CAI, and I have the Fujitsubo equal length headers. It must be the AVCS that needs to be tuned for it to pull hard higher up.

Unless the factory purposely keeps the cams from reaching high lift for a reason, I doubt the avcs has anything to do with the top end pull. The avcs set up on our cars is a bottom end thing...I'm pretty sure by the middle of the power band (or round abouts) they are finished their advancing, and reached 0* advance which is high lift mode. I've just always understood the intake cam only avcs set ups are for low end. If I'm wrong, I will be the first to do some cam tuning! I still think the limits some of us are seeing is due to the turbo. I'm very close to going to a dom 4 or one of the atp stock location 30r's.
Almost forgot, I run an s203 ecu on my car...I'm gonna check out the cam tables from the stock rom and see how the factory has the cam advance. Trey Last edited by treystoys; 11-16-2008 at 02:06 PM. Reason: s203 ecu |

S203 AVCS map doesn't have the "emmisions hole", goes up to 45* and drops more at higher RPMs
RA-R has identical AVCS map fyi |

Actually looking at the stock rom it has a 45* hole at the 2.20 and higher load columns in the 28-3200 rpm columns the rest of the lower load and lower rpm table is at 40.08*

I have an S202 but took out the ECU and now run an Autronic SM4. The strange thing is I don't remember the car dying off after 7,00rpm as it does now, or maybe it is more noticeable cause I am running a bigger turbo. I know Clark has talked about AVCS tuning search for "Tuning AVCS", and he can tune the cars to pull strong all the way to 8,000rpm, but he says you need a good dyno and need to really know what you are doing.

Yeah, that AVCS tuning thread makes my head hurt but he made some good points about retarding AVCS at higher revs to flatten out the power and hold more up to redline.

Anyone know what this ticking is?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OrVjqr_0fyk Good compression, 5% leakdown on 1 cylinder. Hyper suggests it could be a faulty injector, and also has been thought to be a valve adjustment. Any other suggestions to check? |

2- Rod Bearings: Will check tonight/tomorrow for the metal parts. Weren't any at the 1st oil change. 3- Coils: Have swapped 2 coils with no change. Will try other coils. 3- Injectors: Unplugged injectors (one at a time). Seemed a bit quieter. Will check with stethoscope tonight. Thanks for the help! |

Make sure its not the timing belt tensioner. Most of these import motors are crash motors. Its common for them to take a hit. The Idlers and or Tensioners can go bad. The tensioner makes exactly that noise when its failed.

Thats funny, cause now that i think about it, my tensioner was locked solid when my ver 8 arrived too.

Didn't find the reason yet. Still have to check the tensioner. If that doesn't work, will check the valve clearance. Thx for the help.

Not to hyjack the thread from the current ticking questions but:
I'm really starting to dig into the perfect turbo setup for autox/HPDE. I've got a basically stock Ver7 Spec-C RA Limited (crappy inlet since the stock was broken, and a catted turbo back) running the stock turbo (vf30). It dyno'd at 280/260 whp/wtq respectively on Buschers Mustang dyno. Full boost is right around 3800 rpm on an ecutek tune (I think the BPV gasket is leaking hence the slightly slower spool). I was thinking about possible twinscroll setups that are starting to hit the market. I was really interested in Full-Race's 30r twinscroll until they discontinued it (I know they say the 35r twin scroll is pretty much the same, but I don't think they took the 2.0 into consideration). Now I'm back to the drawing board. Looking at a possible 3076 with the .82 hot side, but I'm really trying to keep full boost at or under 4k rpm (I have the 6-speed so the gear ratios are pretty decent to keep the car around this on an autox course). I know a few people have gotten the single scroll 30r to hit full spool at 4k, but I'm curious what the setup was/is. Quickest possible spool with serious HP (350-400 on 93 no meth) is the goal. Granted there are no definite lists since every engine is different, but just wanting some good information from other ej207 owners on setups that produce these results. |

IMO, if you are planning to autox, definietly dont get the 30r or even the 35r, you will never be able to use any of the powerband available. your vf30 is fine, a 16g would fit the purpose too.

While the vf30 produces decent power, it's a rather unresponsive turbo due to the thrust bearing design. Plus it has a on/off switch personality that's hard to live with when you're trying to turn corners smoothly I win my class 9 times out of 10, but every time I'm at an event with a nationally prepped SM car I'm always 2-3 seconds behind. Just trying to narrow that gap a bit The 16g was an option, but if I'm going to do the setup I'd like (EWG, injectors, headers, and a few other goodies) I would rather shoot for something that comes on boil around the 4k mark, that makes upwards of 350whp with good response to the throttle pedal and will keep going till 7500 rpm or later. Please don't take this as dismissing advice, but the word "never" shouldn't apply when it comes to cars Either way, I've got all winter and next summer to research/work on driving skills more. It's not till winter of 2009/2010 that I'll do the swap. |
