I hadn't seen the actual video of the impact until a few days ago.....absolutely astounding there was not greater loss of life.

And when making a visual approach like that in the final segment I don't know how the pilot's eyeballs aren't solely alternating between monitoring the PAPI and his airspeed while maintaining runway heading. Should have been an approach he'd done hundreds of times.

A culture that doesn't encourage subordinates to question their superiors naturally creates **** pilots.

You can create all the automation and safeguards in the world, and the Koreans will still figure out a way to crash it.

This, coupled with a horrifying reliance on the automation. 8 miles out, visibility to the moon, and you are selecting descent rates haphazardly?

EDIT: of course, the auto throttle mode as was theorized proved to be correct. Just a painful event to watch unfold, not to mention how many times the F/O tried to speak up.

So, to be clear....

1. Pilot selects autopilot
2. Auto pilot does bad things
3. Pilot doesn't notice / care / can't tell that autopilot is messing up
4. Pilot is responsible for plane...including autopilot behavior
5. Pilot was an idiot

No, the autopilot didn't do bad things. The pilot did.

They had ARMED the auto-throttles but were not activated.

You have to ARM and ACTIVATE the auto-throttles to make them work. Plus, if you "click" out of auto-throttles, they remain armed but you have to activate them again for them to actually do something.

Yeah this is more what I was trying to say. Seems like a poor understanding of the automation, and the PF slow to recognize it all.

Unfortunately that is what they are trained to do in other parts of the world. They are trained to operate the autopilot, not fly the airplane.

In the days following the accident, I saw a graphic of the glide path of the flight.

It looked like I landed that plane.

It's that much worse watching it played out in the animation
