Best place to buy used tires?
I'm looking for a set of used tires for my new wheels. Since I'm in high school I can't afford to pay 700 dollars a set. Is there any where I can get gently used tires that will be at a discount? I'd rather not skimp on tires given how important they are for both safety and performance.

To be honest I think you should save your money until you can afford to pay for new ones. I don't know of anywhere you can get "gently used" tires (scratch that, see below). Tons of people sell used tires on Craigslist, but even the best I've seen promise minimum 50% tread but nothing more than that. You're also gonna need to look at the date of manufacture. You don't want old tires, even it they're brand new "old" tires. I wouldn't want to put 5 year old used tires on my car.
If they're an OEM size, you may be able to find some stock OEM take-offs on this forum. Some people swap out OEM tires almost immediately...because sometimes they suck. |

You can't afford new tires, but you spent money on new wheels?
There's something wrong with order of your priorities. |

I'm amazed nobody has weighed in with the obligatory judgmental NASIOC comment about a high school student having a WRX and how it's too much car for you and you'll kill yourself and your parents bought it for you blah blah blah...
Keep posting, eventually he might respond to one of your pointless goading comments! Quote:

I bought my son a stage 2 WRX.
BAM (I also detuned it back to stage zero) The cheapest way to get wheels and tires is to buy a complete set from someone local to you on nasioc. No matter what you get, the overall diameter MUST be close to exactly the same. If not, you will trash your center diff. If you already bought wheels with not tires, sell them and start over again. |

To everyone that is criticizing me, please stop. I paid for half of my car. The other half was a graduation present from my parents. Yes it's a fast car. Yes it's expensive. But it's a car I've admired and researched for multiple years. I bought used 17 inch wheels for 500. No they aren't xxr, jackass. I am prepared to buy new/safe tires, but I created this thread to see if there were other alternatives.
To everyone who has helped me, and hasn't been rude, thankyou. I don't know why people are so rude on here. We all started out as newbies, did we not? |

That's not how the internet works buddy...you should probably save your pennies and buy some decent all seasons. Tirerack.com and other online tire shops often offer some pretty decent deals and rebates. |

Unfortunately, this is what Newbies have to go through on this site. When I started out, I avoided creating new threads like this. Instead I did a lot of reading and searching on this site as there is a lot of good information behind all of the b.s. and junk and learned to ask the right questions. Plus any mention of "high school, WRX or STI, and mods" in the same sentence will usually get you ripped on.
As to your specific question, buying used tires are a bit of a risk. These are wear items and do have a shelf life regardless of tread depth. Tires do last longer when driven on instead of sitting around stacked up in the garage somewhere. Plus, you will end up having to buy new tires sooner anyways. I would personally avoid buying used tires online for this reason and if I did, I would want to see them in person. Not sure what tire shops you have near you, but try looking around local shops (i.e. discount tire, les schwab, big o, walmart, sams club, costco, tires plus, etc.) Even if the place does not carry a specific tire, ask if they can order them and how much (install, tax, fees, etc.). Also consider that purchasing tires online may not be as cheap as buying local when you consider shipping. With Spring arriving, many manufacturers or shops will offer deals, sales, and mail-in-rebates. If on a budget, you may have to forego a specific brand tire for something that is a better deal. |

Kantnerner - I stalk Craigslist until what I want/need shows up. Then be ready to deal.
There are many reasons great deals will show up on Craigslist. People move, sell their old car, buy larger wheels, etc. Just be a cautious and informed buyer. Which would be good advice no matter where you're shopping. |

I just bought a set of summer tires from them $450 shipped. That's well under the $700 you are budgeting for new tires. |

No need to buy used tires when new ones are SO CHEAP (if you look). Cooper RS3-A's (2nd best rated all seasons on CR, regardless of what you think of CR) are $450 out the door shipped on discount tires, and you can get them mount/balanced for $15 each if you shop around/price match.

Kantnerner,
When I was 18, I had an OLD BEATER Toyota and I bought used tires. They were adequate, served me well for a year and were on the car when I sold it. I remember what is was like to be young and broke, but I would be very reluctant to put used tires on my WRX. In my experience internet tire vendors will be a world cheaper than buying local. I think you should hold out until you can afford a new set of tires. Tires are probably the most important piece of equipment you'll buy for safety, reliability and performance. My recommendation: 1. Browse tirerack. 2. Find your top three picks for summer performance tires in your size. 3. Google/eBay search for the lowest price w/ shipping 4. Depending on the saving I might still buy from tirerack, for the customer service. (^^These guys are very helpful with returns. They sold me a set of wheels advertised to fit over brembos. When I found out they didn't fit, tirerack scheduled a UPS pickup and issued me a $100 gift certificate for my troubles.) If you're deadset on buy something used, see if you have a local suby forum. I know Minnesota, Colorado and Cali all have local forum. There will likely be a few guys with selling like new tires. Usually members who are either rich or work at a tire/alignment shop. I would stick to a local car club, where the members care about their reputation, rather than craigslist. |

I will point out that Discount Tire Direct (google it, or look on ebay) has a $50 off any purchase over $400 coupon right now, with free shipping. Certain brands have stackable coupons on top of that. You can buy a brand new set of Kumho AST's (not the best, but new) for barely $400 after the discount. Any set of General's has an additional prepaid visa. I just bought a new set of tires from them yesterday.

onlinetires.com That is where I get my tires. Pretty decent pricing. Some off brands and they are cheap, since that is what your after. For used tires, your best bet is to go to local shops and look. Depending on the size your after, it may be harder to find used.
