I'm debating between the general altimax arctic and the michelin x-ice xi3.
I would get 205/60-16 for oem 02 wrx wheels. Anyone prefer one over the other? Different between the two sets is almost $100, Michelin being more expensive |

Wheel: 2005+ GDB 5x114.3 BBS 19lb/wheel, powder coated in new condition, $780 to the door;
Tire: Blizzak WS60 225 55 17 97R(106mph damn low rating), 27lb/tire, brand new $500 to the door. In general: Pros: Rally racing look and great lateral traction on heavy snow/water ice mixture, better ride quality than stock 245 18 Dunlop and quiet as well on dry pavement. Decent dry traction comparable to Continental DWS, reasonable price; Cons: Mediocre longitudinal traction on ice/snow esp. when breaking, poor lateral traction on snow covered ice/black ice, a bit heavy at 46lb/corner. In comparison with WS70: WS60 has better tread-wear as WS70 has very different compound(or shall I say NanoPro Tech polymer and Multicell compound make a loose tire texture). WS70 improves ice performance a lot but not a big difference on dry/wet/rain/deep snow. I had WS70 on my Audi C4 A6 Avant last winter. |

@sreggi how is it that both the rim and tire have sores? from the pic, it looks likes your rim is indented shaped. unless my lazy eye is kicking in again. seems like you knew you hit a pot hole.?

im not sure what you guys are seeing with the rim. the tires and rims are dirty as hell from the boston snowstorm over the weekend and from installation of these tires from 2 weeks ago. i checked all rims (on the outside at least) and found no problems. a dent on the rim would stand out up close. |

To the right of the bubble, look at the pic you posted. It doesnt seem perfectly curved where the lip of wheel meets the sidewall. Looks kinked/bent

I believe Reggie.
The bulging tire gives an optical illusion that the rim is bent. In reality the rubber is obstructing the view of the rims true curvatire |

The bubble just happens to coincide with where the casting comes out a bit at the spoke.
Not bent. Bummer on the bubble. It happens sometimes. I had it happen on a couple brand new tires once (in the tread zone) thankfully with it being purchased locally they replaced them under warranty, the shops warranty or the manufacturer, I don't know. |

An 'all-season' tire that isn't branded M+S...? Weird.

Yeah - I just went out and double-checked, but these are the OEM tires from my '13 Impreza Sport Limited.
Oh, and I think I have answers to my questions, but would love it if someone could confirm: 1) Tire chains are actual chains that wrap the entire tire. Spring chains are metal ropes/cords/thick wires that go in a loose zig-zag formation over the tire instead. 2) I'm going with the*Super Z6's...assuming I understand #1 right |

My 0.02 for your safety: Get rid of those Yoko (sell them on Craigslist ) & get better tires (in 225/45). |

Roads with mandatory chain controls require a tire with the snowflake symbol instead of m+s in many states. It would be wise to do some checking with the local department of transportation. The z6 chains are some of the lowest clearance available I've been able to find. I have some for my '12 wrx, but haven't needed to use them due to snowflake tires. They appear to have no clearance issues after dry fitting, but if the manual says no chains...it could be a bit of an expensive repair gamble. I decided to have them, and if I end up on a road closed except for chains only, I have options. From my dry fit test, I would very likely use them if needed.

Just a little FYI, since I see you are in Oregon also. In oregon M+S tires and AWD/4WD constitutes having a traction device. The only time you need more, is during a conditional closure, which doesn't happen often, and then you need chains AND AWD/4WD, snowflake tires alone won't be legal..

Winter tire specs - STi
Hi all, new owner of a 2012 WRX STi. Loving it so far even though I only drove it home.
I need to get winter tires on it and every shop is specing 225/50R17 tires. I'm new to all this so go easy. I looked at the door frame and the specifications for tires should be 245/45R18. Why am I getting specced 225/50R17? Also, another shop is speccing 215/50R17, which I am thinking about getting since it is the best deal right now... will there be problems on the car if I put on a 215/50R17 package? |

Perhaps the shops are accidently pulling up the wrx, and not the wrx sti. Or, they wish to sell you some winter wheels also. [shrug] |

Its no accident and its obviously a winter tire and wheel combo and sounds like its a descent shop to deal with cuz they're not trying to gouge the op with 18" winter tires lol
