The Official White Smoke out of the exhaust thread
Well, my wrx is finally back together after about 5 months. Long story short..I bought it w/ a blown motor. Replaced the shortblock w/ a working one and added a hks catless up pipe and a invidia bellmouth d/p.
Soo I noticed today that the car was constantly smoking white smoke, even after it was warmed up. I drove it around some more and noticed that when I accelerated there would be a puff of smoke. I've read numerous threads about this stuff, most say its the turbo water seal and it very well could be, the turbo has 109K on it, however it was never overboosted to my knowledge, the original owner had it stock then had a cobb stage 1 flash on it IIRC. I did a few WOT runs (2nd & 3rd gear) and continued to cruise around at like 40 mph for a little bit longer. The car pulls hard and drives fine. The car wasnt smoking, even after letting it idle for about 10 mins, however when I revved the engine it'd blow smoke. It can't be anything to do with the heads because I lapped all the valves & seats and cleaned them, they looked like new. All of the valves have new valve seals. The shortblock I put it has 55K on it supposedly and was working fine when the original owner swapped it out for an ej257 (thats what i was told) I havent had a chance to do a compression test yet, but I have also heard it could be a PCV thing. So how about it guys, whats done to your car, and how'd you fix the smoking Ill start car: 02 wrx sedan relavent mods: hks catless up pipe, invidia bellmouth d/p Fix: N/A

Could be numerous things, my guess is bad oil seal in the turbo.

Remember, oil will burn blue-ish... if it's pure white that is an indication of water like the OP seems to suspect. How fast are you losing coolant?

my guess is ringlands, get it compression checked, fastest way to figure out your problem

yea im thinking this might be it. if the ringlands were broken, would there be any scoring on the cylinder walls at all? I cleaned all 4 cylinders before i put it back together and spun the crank many times, the cylinders didnt have any signs of gouging or nothing. ive also heard that going catless also promotes the smoking also. It was also very cold yesterday, like around 30 degrees I think, at night anyways. My dad thinks its steam being blown off in the exhaust but I had the car running for about 2 hours non stop to make sure everything was running well and it appears to be other then the white smoke once in awhile. Smoke
Hello,
Had the same problem resolved it this weekend here is my original post >> http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=1645287 good luck oh and good guess pDubs, Thats as long as the motor checks out i.e compression and leak down tests, and your valve guide seals aren't the issue... |
