Need help w/ 255/40/18 Tire Decision
I apologize as I see a lot of similar posts asking for help w/ tire decisions but after searching none were close enough to my situation...
I am in the market for a good all-around Summer tire for my 11 STI. Dry/wet Grip and non-excessive noise is the two most important criteria for me. Treadwear is not as important but still a consideration. I was about to get Pilot Super Sports but quanities are limited and I was told they could not be purchased through my wholesale connection. I found three back-up options, Bridgestone Potenza Pole Position S-04, BF Goodrich g-Force Sport Comp-2, and Continental ExtremeContact DW. Some people have told me anything will be better than the stock Dunlop SP Sport 600's which I tend to believe as they're awful, but needed more opinions if possible.

SO-4's. Those will be my next tire. I had the older S0-3's and they were the best street tire I've ever had.

Federal 595 RS-R it's a track tire but I love them!! They are amazing in the dry and good in the wet as well. I'm at 20k and they still have 35% tread left. they are cheap to $105 per tire. They fit wide though so you might need 245's for stock wheels

Also, I put that "I tried searching" disclaimer on any post that may have a "tired" subject so people don't bitch or try to make an example of me. Some people have nothing better to do than to do that ;-) |

Anyway, I appreciate the opinions. If I cannot get the Super-Sports through my wholesale connection I will most likely default to the Bridgestone Potenza S-04's. I was already kind of leaning that way and it sounds like others have had good experience as well.
Thanks! |

There are still people that drive in #I mode.
Id avoid extremecontact DW unless you want a very soft tire putting around everywhere. |

I only said that because the GD had 17's and there are great tires that you can't purchase for the GR because they are 18's (Star Specs, certain Kumhos, etc). I was just stating that to compare apples to apples.

So nobody has ever gone with a set of 18s on their GD? And what tires can you buy in 17s but aren't available in 18s?

I know people have gone to 18's with them but in this case I was looking for a quick answer and I wasn't finding any scenarios that were the same as mine. I don't know why you are making me out to sound like a snob or elitist because I have a GR STI, I just wanted an apples-to-apples comparison.

I got the answers I needed from other members but I basically wanted to pinpoint people that were coming off their OEM Dunlops and looking for their first replacement set. In other words, people in my exact shoes and also just happening to be looking for 245/40/18s or 255/40/18's. You are right, the situation is broader than that and not just confined to my exact chassis/year/etc, but I was looking to nail down opinions of those in the same position as me (buying first replacement set and generally new to the Suby world).

I ran the SP600s 2 years ago and they're not as bad as what people make them out to be. Are they great? No. Are they noisy? Yes. I didn't mind them on a daily basis but I also wasn't comparing them to better tires I've had in the past.
I've never shopped for quiet tires but your best bet is to check with Luke at TireRack. |

Quiet and Great Dry Grip really don't go together
I don't have experience with the SP600 but the SP01 are great if you don't mind the noise and can find a set for cheap locally. *edit*Just adding comparison about the OEM tires I know the sp01 don't have the size for 18" I'm still debating on 595RS-R or PSS as my next set if I don't find some SP01 locally Also, I'm with everyone else.. not sure why OP doesn't seem GR and GD can be compared. Hell there is plenty 09+ wrx posts about the same exact questions.... |

The Pilot Super Sports came back in finally. Went with those after planning on Bridgestones.
Thank you to those that helped with the question instead of overly scrutinizing the question. |

I don't see an issue with the GR. Definitely not a size I'd recommend for the GD.

BF Goodrich g-Force Sport Comp-2 or conti DWS. they both are great for me to do HWY driving and some back roads. I don't see the NEED for having S04 w/-350whp and non tracker. Quote:

total diff is 4mm between the 2 tire, 245 or 255. I'm went with 255/40/18 & BF Goodrich g-Force Sport Comp-2, as my new set up. |
