Default Nikon D70 (dSLR) review on DPReview...

The long awaited D70 review is up on DPReview...

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond70/

Highlights:
  • D70 better built, better featured
  • Moire issue is there, Phil doesn't think it's a big deal.
  • Moire issue greatly reduced with RAW workflow (seems to be more a problem of in-cam RAW to JPEG conversion)
  • High ISO in-cam JPEGs have similar amount of noise, but Nikon noise doesn't suffer "rainbow" effect.
  • Confirms high shutter speed color shift problem, then says it's not a big deal.
  • Final analysis is that it's "Highly Recommend" (as is the Digital Rebel), and the tone is that the D70 is a better buy than the Rebel.

Eh, not really. The moral of the story seems to be that the D70 is a kickass camera. It's much more "responsive" than the DR in virtually every regard. This isn't surprising since they're really aiming more for the 10D's throat, and it does well on that front as well, IMO.

The thing that's most compelling to me is that the D70 has a much finer noise pattern, a bit closer to that of film. I may pick one up to try it out. Nikon has equivalents to the lenses I use, so there really isn't anything else barring me from switching. Right now it sounds like the RAW workflow sucks. If I do switch (or have both) I'll wait until Capture 1 supports the D70.

Woot.... ! Nikon has always treated me well, not like it matters. I wont be in the market for a while.
