Default Ok so my engine caught on fire today

I just finished installing my "hybrid" engine 2.5 sti block on ported and polished wrx heads tgv completly deleted no sensors, vf30 turbo, 650 cc dw injectors, catless uppipe and a cobb intake. I think i got all the vacume leaks down except i dont know what to do with the vacum lines that went to the tgv valves. So anyways after i thought i fixed all the vacume lines i realized that i had a leak out of the coolant line on the turbo but it wasnt leaking much so i said screw it and tryed driving it around the neighborhood really quick with no boost and barely 1/4 throttle jsut to make sure everything was ok. so i get back to my house and my friend screams your cars on fire! so i crap out a brick real quick run over panic and my first instinct was to spit on the fire lol so after i hocked a loogie on it i sprinted for the hose ( the fire which seemed to be coming from the cross pipe for some weird reason then went out and i started up the engine about 20 mins later and it was fine no more fire. what the heck caused this? could coolant dripping on the hot pipe cause it to ignite? i also finally got the codes to go away which were p0500 p1518 p1591 p0136 p0131 and p0132. also the car was driving retardedly rough on the map that i tryed flashing to it which was off of a nother hybrid that was having knock problems under WOT but i just wanted a map to get it to the tuner. So im not even sure wether or not its a vacume leak thats causeing this roughness or does the car need to be tuned that bad any help or sugestions would be great guys

Oil is flammable......so is gas of corse....coolant is not. You may have an oil leak somewhere. With that said usually oil will not catch on fire under your hood it usually just burns off. What are you using to reflash your ecu?

You will def. need to take some of the knock out and also see if your advanced multiplier is actually at 16. If I were in your shoes I would take a lot of stuff and when I say a lot I mean A LOT of stuff off trying to find any leak there could possibly be. Take stuff off and put it on tight. Check and see if your o-rings set into the fuel rails well enough. If you have those off just a little bit they will leak and you won't notice it at first cause it does not spray just leaks.

He's got a hell of a lot more to worry about than his advance multiplier if the engine is catching fire You need to double and triple check for oil leaks and gas leaks. You won't have a chance to guard against blowing the motor from detonation if it burns to the ground first!

Coolant is flammable when using anti-freeze in moderate ratios. One reason I use Water Wetter.

Enh, been around long enough. Talked to enough former employees, programmers, seen enough projects they promised to complete but never finished. Its pretty obvious they feel threatened by opensource, as they should. Smoke and mirrors only works so long. Why he wastes his time "staying classy" with posts like that, he could actually do something constructive, is beyond me.

No i really like open source ecu tuning its almost...like i siad ALMOST as good and can controll just about as much as the unit that you spent over 700 or even a thousand dollars on...gues what it took me about 10 mins to download it onto my laptop and now i got engine managment and now that their working on launch controll an all the other cool features that the accesport has and utecs so i really support these guys...ive donated to the enginuity forums and osecuroms because in my eys its worth keeping it in development and helpin them out a little...but what i dont like is calling people like rallispec and having them tell me that they cant tune my car because its open source and cobb would get mad for tuning a free source tuning program...but whatever im sure turbo trix or dynoflash (havent made up my mind yet) will do nice on the tune

I think everyone is a little tense here..

Most likely the fire was from spilt fluids during the install.

I would look over the engine bay and..
- check for anymore leaks
- Any exhaust leaks that could set somethin on fire?

ok i found the cause of the fire....the coolant line on the turbo was dripping down and mixing in with an oil leak that i have no idea where is coming from. i fixed the coolant leak and now i cant find the oil leak i thought it was coming from the oil cooler so i removed the oil filter and the oil cooler to make sure that i put the o ring gasket between the oil cooler and block.. the o ring was there but just to be safe i put a new one in then i started it up and it was still dripping oil on the passenger side exhaust manifold i looked everywhere that i could see and still couldnt find any leaks. my only guess would be that the valve cover is leaking slightly but there is oil on almost everything by the manifold so its so hard to tell.i guess im going to check the valve cover in the am and see what happens...its funny how i can build an engine entirely by myself and cant find a damn oil leak lol

damn dude i was searching for this just because i had the same prob...yesterday i pulled up to my house and noticed i was smokin from under the turbo...so today i look under the car and it seems that my turbo is leaking oil and its runing down the up pipe and the header ..it should be the turbp oil line right?

Default oil leak

you should also look around the timing belt cover, the cam seals can easily leak and being behind the covers are hard to source. I had a customer with one leaking. It was hard to diagnose cause it pools inside and slowly seeps out the seam on the cover pieces, directly on the crossover pipe.

Try spraying down the oily engine with some engine degreaser, get it clean again. Then run car at idle, and see if you can't tell where it's coming from.

did you break out one of the half moon machine plugs on the head during install by chance? I accidentally hit my up pipe off one and took it out before. doesnt take much at all if you hit it just right, and it would be next to impossible to see without pulling a lot of stuff out.

i think it might be the moon plugs.. but damn its impossible to see. it looks like its coming from behind the timing belt covers( between the timing belt covers and the block) ughhhh i hope thats not where its coming from cause if it is it looks like im pulling the engine....AGAIN there is just no room to work in there and pull off those dreaded cam gears to source the problem
